Sales in UY – Be Exotic

exotic 1    Try to be exotic !

My dear friends Doug and Syd started a discussion about incongruous English words in Uruguayan advertising. See Dougs blog http://www.mydayinuy.com. Since I found no way to upload photos to his blog with my comment,  I will do it here. I like your blog Doug and your comments Syd, you know, this is not against your opinion, just my attempt to supplement your ignition of this theme.

“ ASK BETTY „, as a company name.  In the windows you can see their services – in Spanish ?

This time boys, I do not understand why you think it’s unusual or inappropriate to mix the languages. I think it’s more the normal influence of the „international communication language English“. And Uruguay tries to be open, communicative and international.

DSC01905   Now we know, its SPRING TIME in Uruguay.

Its aloud to use „eye catchers“ in advertising, every one does. Uruguay has for a long time two currencies, as we know. You can pay almost everywhere in Pesos and US Dollars. I like that and I like also the modern way of an international mixture.

DSC01906   Whatever it means „Pinilo Go“ !!

We can see that here in Uruguay for a long time and its increasing. More and more Uruguayans speak and understand English. Its a positive trend to participate with the „outside“ world.

DSC01908       „shop for the used ones“.  Funny, but eye catching !

Many words are already used in daily communication with the Spanish, like „offer, outlet, sale, car, cash, club, pool, sauna, self-storage, wow and many many more. I like to call it the natural mixing of cultures and the „world communication Language“.

DSC01909a   How would one translate „“WOW““ in to Spanish ?

I like to see it positive, nothing against your opinion and comments. You are totally right, sometimes it looks very funny. See the pics, which I like to share with you. Click on pics.

Fantasie company name in English, you are right Syd, just to be exotic. And well known De Voto market.

DSC01914a    DSC01915
Same rights for everyone. A pet shop as well as a self storage.
How would this advertising sound, „tienda de mascotas“ instead of „pet shop“ ?
Or „sí mismo almacenamiento“ instead of „self storage“ ?

DSC01912
English ist not enough. Now the Germans come with their language too.  Zentrum sounds much more exotic then just centro.  And the point is – SALES – sales meens being unique, attractive, different and catch customers attention !! Whats wrong with that, everyone try’s it and that’s legit.  Welcome to international Uruguay !

Berlin in Uruguay

berlin 20

Berlin around the world.

Berlin has many namesakes. At the Berlin Technical University once 118 places in the world have been identified, which bear the name of the German capital. Those are not always cities, it can also be villages or settlements that are connected in this way with the metropolis on the Spree.

berlin 17 jamaica  Berlin in Jamaica.

By example, in Germany you’ll find another Berlin. In whole Europe another 11 Berlin’s. 12 Berlin’s in Central America, over 30 Berlin’s in North America, 3 in Africa, 4 in other areas of the world.
The most – 38 – you’ll find in South America, from which just Colombia has 19 Berlin’s. Uruguay has one and I like to introduce you to the Berlin in Uruguay  (further down).

berlin 44 bolivia   Berlin in Bolivia.

The famous photographer Harry Hampel, who in 1996 set out to search for the Berlin’s of the world took place about in Argentina at 4500 meters altitude three mud huts, a fire pit and a cattle gate – a nearly deserted town called Berlin, which was founded by German immigrants and today is inhabited by little more than a handful of people.

berlin 45 tchad  Berlin in Tchad.

From Tierra del Fuego to Canada and South Africa almost to Siberia extends the names gang. A corner of an island in southern Chile called Berlin as well as the Mount Berlin in Antarctica. Some of the Berlin’s around the world will be presented here.

Berlin in Antarctica.

The Mount Berlin is a double volcano in Antarctica. With an altitude of 3,478 meters at the Berlin Crater he is of Marie Byrd Land is the highest volcano and the sixth highest of the entire Antarctic. Mount Berlin is still active today.

Berlin in Australia.

berlin 29    Deserted Berlin in Australia. Disappointing.

In South Australia exists Berlino Station oder Berlino Homestead. This is an abandoned station, about half way off the Birdsville track, leading from Maree to Birdsville. There is not much to see once passed the Mungeranie Roadhouse until you reach Mirra Mitta.

aussie 24 mirra mitta bore  aussie 23 mirra mitta
Our rental 4WD at Mirra Mitta Bore, and driving through Mirra Mitta Crossing. Some idiots always try  to explore this country with a normal car, often Australians. These were Italian tourists we had to pull out.

In the old days until the early 1930’s Mirra Mitta was home to a small store that supplied fresh veg and supplies to travelers passing through. About 16 km north of „Mirra Mitta Bore“ I took off the Birdsville track. No track, nothing at all. But about 12 km to the west should be Berlino Station. Nothing to see, nothing to discover, just plain country desert.

Berlin in Argentina.

Jujuy Province, Berlin, about 60 kilometers north-east of Susques. Berlin in the Andes is  about 4500 meters high, making it the highest in the world Berlin. A Berlin described, which I haven’t seen – yet. But, if you know what’s there, like described above ((some mud huts and a cattle gate) or better not, is it still important to visit ?

Berlin in Canada.

berlin 25 canada     West Berlin harbor in Nova Scotia, Canada.

1871 the city of Blueberry was named in honor after the German capital. Ironically, there was – and there is – in Nova Scotia an East and a West Berlin,  2 km apart, as one can see. When we traveled along, it was quiet quiet quiet – sleepy towns, nothing there to see.

berlin 28   In Germany united, in Canada still divided.

The city of Kitchener, in the state of Ontario, was the Town of Berlin from 1854 until 1912 and the City of Berlin from 1912 until 1916. End of the eighteenth century fled ethnic German Mennonites from Pennsylvania came here because they were afraid to be forced, against the principles of their faith, by the English crown for military service in the War of Independence of the Americans.

1820 the city attracted more and more emigrants from Germany, was named after Berlin. Even today the German influence to be felt, for example, through the annual Oktoberfest  (biggest Oktoberfest outside of Germany),  to the arriving guests from all over North America, and the very well known Christmas Market.

Berlin in Nevada.

berlin 21 nevada    The ghost town of Berlin Nevada.

Though it dates back to the turn of the century, Berlin didn’t have much of a history. At its peak, it had about 250 residents, most of them silver miners. When they were denied a raise in pay in 1911, they took off – even leaving many of their belongings behind (which remain in place today in a original outdoor museum).

berlin 23    berlin 24

This Berlin has 13 structures and a cemetery, is now part of Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, home to the 225-million-year-old fossils of several ancient marine animals.

Berlin in South Africa.

berlin 39     Little town Berlin, about 35 km from the coast.

Berlin is a town in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. A village some 20km east of King William’s Town. Founded in 1857 by German settlers of the British-German Legion and named after the German capital.

berlin 18 southafrica    „Berlin falls“, also called „candle falls“, because of their shape.

The Berlin Falls is a waterfall in Mpumalanga, South Africa. They are located close to God’s Window and the highest waterfall in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. The falls are on the Sabine River and fall 80 metres (260 ft), dumping into a circular basin flanked by red cliffs.

Berlin in Papua New Guinea.

berlin 40 papua     A place of coconuts, bright colors and fish.

Officially named Berlin Harbor, this place forms an archipelago of 4 islands, located very close to the northern shore of Papua New Guinea, Aitape being the coast city of reference. This Berlin is home to around 2,000 people and is characterized by wooden stilt houses which stand between tropical vegetation. These houses are built inland on the islands and not close to the ocean water. Islanders mostly live of fishing or making wood canoes.

berlin 42 papua     Berlin harbor Papua New Guinea.

The name Berlin comes from the colonial age. Between 1884 and 1914, part of what is now Papua New Guinea was under occupation of the German Empire and called Kaiser-Wilhelmsland. It is not exactly known when the name “Berlin Harbor” was given to this place, but it is believed to have happened in the first years after the occupation. Those that established the port were missionaries from German trading companies, which benefited a lot from the coconut palm products of the area.

Berlin in Uruguay.

New Berlin is a small town in Uruguay, located in the department of Rio Negro (Black River), on the coast of the Uruguay River. It has a very rich history since its inception with indigenous ancestors being a truly attractive area.

berlin 2     Perfect sunset country in Nuevo Berlin.

Its date of foundation dated 16 March 1875 under the name „Berlin“ in the department of Paysandu. It was founded by Richard and Karl Wendelstadt brothers, who were part of the important immigration of young Europeans to America in search of wealth through trade.

Commissioned by the founders, the surveyor Fridolín Quincke was using the most advanced techniques for the time outlined the plan of the village in 1874.

Two years later, officially founded, initially to accommodate all workers. The town grew rapidly because of the fertility of the land, exploited for agriculture. The first steam plow that came to Uruguay entered the dock, Liebig salting in Villa Independencia , today Fray Bentos. See my posts (part 1-5) about the Liebig aera in Fray Bentos.

Six years after its foundation, the town had customs by Placido Erráes, a police station by Rafael Montemar, a Magistrates Court by Lorenzo Ferrari and a school, managed by Enrique Modernell.

The first buildings were built in the village were: one general store and shed Arzibale Santiago, located where today is based Democratic Center New Berlin; and in 1888 a shoe store owned by Felipe del Curto was installed; a hard blacksmith by its owner, Eleuterio Tapia; a carpentry shop owned by Pedro Perosse, an inn by Felipe Biratti and a brick factory by Augustine Faccio.

In 1886 the town and its surroundings were invaded by cholera, ending the lives of many people, creating 2 cemeteries.  The  School „Republic of Germany“, elected name in 1993, was build by the population. This public school No. 8 was inaugurated 1895.

The first buildings were the Pigrau family house in 1876, its gabled roofs and shingles and settled mud walls can still be seen in the inhabited locality, located at the corner of Calles Pita Rivera and Nebril, the Garbarino family house in 1894 located on Rambla Argentina, now a tourist lodge and the church „Nuestra Senora del Rosario“ located in front of Plaza Libertad which was originally the town center.

berlin 8   The Dock.

It is believed, according to research, that the first area trade was „Eucalyptus“, owned by Mr. Seuz, he also runned  a bakery. The first trade general store was built in 1889 in Ejido Farms, owned by the  Garbarino family.
The Berlin shield was created by the painter Luis Solari Rionegrense. Its symbols are: head of cattle, wheat, under the aegis of the sun and the colors of the Uruguayan flag.

It is important to emphasize the construction of the dock in 1942. From there large quantities of cereals were moved,  recalling that during the Second World War it was called „The Kitchen of the World“.

DSC00126  Modern art on an outdated building.

Over the years Berlin, now called „New Berlin“ began to have educational, social and sports centers, medical services, utilities, financial services, business services, accommodation and green spaces. Its population continues to grow and has benefited thanks to the large enterprises that have been in the area. Today Berlin has about 2000 inhabitants. But not many tourists, because its location is off main roads and remote.

Touristic Berlin.

New Berlin is  located 45 kilometers from Fray Bentos, the provincial capital, which offers a spa area on the shores of the Rio Uruguay and islets that invite to enjoy a different kind of tourism. Its tranquility and the friendly people make this town an ideal vacation spot. Some highlights to see:  Playa El Sauzal, Santa Rosa,  Arroyo „The Stud“,  The Round Islands, Stone of the Berlin Wall,  Ruins of Saladero,  Old general store  Garbarino, and the Dock New Berlin.

During your stay you can horseback riding and fishing. They also organize excursions by boat on the river. Rental bikes are available to explore the surroundings. Paysandu is 90 km,  Fray Bentos and Las Canas 45 km and to Montevideo 230 km.

berlin 14   Great for fishing and other outdoor adventure.

New Berlin has two camping’s on the coast of Uruguay River and under the trees in a natural environment. Offered facilities are hot showers, electricity, dishwasher, tables with barbecues and more. They can accommodate up to 300 people. In high season they are booked out. In low season they are a gem for outdoor lovers and nature seekers.

Wiener Schnitzel

schnitzel 20

Since I started this blog, almost a year ago, I promised to show you the recipe for a perfect „Wiener Schnitzel“ ( German for „Viennese schnitzel“). Many varieties are possible and served around the world. But they are not original Wiener Schnitzel’s. Even in Vienna you will find many different ways to make and sell Wiener Schnitzel.

schnitzel 2   Wiener Schnitzel served with greens or french fries.

The original Wiener Schnitzel is a very thin, breaded and pan fried cutlet made from veal. It is one of the best known specialties of Viennese cuisine. The Wiener Schnitzel is the national dish of Austria. Lets just call it „Schnitzel“ in the following post.

schnitzel 23a   After walking 18 holes of golf:  Shoes off, Schnitzel and beer, what’s better ?

How to roast a juicy and crispy original „Wiener schnitzel“ ?

schnitzel 15    Schnitzel, outside crispy inside juicy.

The little tricks while preparing a breaded Schnitzel.

Ingredients.

This time I won’t leave a list of ingredients, because you can easily read it out of the next part „how to do“. Most important is the meat.
The dish is prepared from butterfly cut of veal, about 4 mm thin. This is sometimes hard to get. Alternatives see under „tips“.

schnitzel 13    Wonderful fresh veal cutlets. Sadly not available in UY.

To get the schnitzel tender, it must first be tapped with a mallet. Best is to place the meat between thin plastic wrap.
By tapping to loosen the fibers of the meat and make it pliable, an absolute prerequisite for success. Now more season with salt and pepper.

schnitzel 24  schnitzel 26
Wiener Schnitzel and a cool beer or a glass of wine are always good companions.

How to do.

The flowering:
On a plate mix about 120 g flour with a teaspoon of salt, some pepper and spices (not original, but it gives a bit of additional flavor) are stirred well to taste.

schnitzel 2 (2)

The egging:
On another plate mix an egg, a hefty pinch of salt and a teaspoon of oil, a teaspoon of mineral water (with gas) with a fork. Vigorously to form a homogeneous airy liquid.

schnitzel 3 (2)

The breading:
On a third plate make a mix of breadcrumbs and some herbs if you like. The original Wiener Schnitzel is just made with plane flour, egg and breadcrumbs ! This is the classic panade of course, if you like it more crunchy, use, crashed and mixed in, corn flakes.

schnitzel 4 (2)

Turn the Schnitzel’s first in flour, then in egg and then  in the breadcrumbs until they are well coated on all sides with all the trimmings. Put the pieces of meat side by side on a plate and allow to dry for about 1/2 hour in the refrigerator. Then turn around and leave the other side also dry for about 1/2 hour. Thus dried, the breading for frying will be much crispier. The bread crumbs must not be pressed into the meat, so that they stay dry and can be „souffled“.

schnitzel 18   The right temperature and slow cooking.

Finally the Schnitzel is fried in a good proportion of lard or clarified butter at a temperature from 160 to 170 °C until it is golden yellow. This is the origin, we use top quality olive oil for this step. The Schnitzel must swim in the fat, otherwise it will not cook evenly; the fat cools too much and intrudes into the bread crumbs, moistening them.

schnitzel 5   We like a few small cuts rather then one big one.

During the frying the Schnitzel is repeatedly slightly tossed around the pan. Also during the frying, fat can be scooped from the pan with a spoon and poured onto the meat. The Schnitzel is done after it turns golden yellow or brown.  Take them out the fat and let them drain on kitchen paper for a minute. Serve hot immideately.

schnitzel 1  Aside „Spaetzle“ and a creamy mushroom-caper sauce.

Tips.

How you serve your Schnitzels, just with a slice of lemon or with a big portion of side dishes, is your personal decision. There are many kinds of possibilities.

schnitzel 17    Northern German, with an egg and anchovies.

A popular variation is made with pork instead of veal, because pork is cheaper than veal (usually about half the price). To avoid mixing up different products, the Austrian and German food committees have decided that a „Wiener Schnitzel“ must be made of veal. A Schnitzel made of pork can be called „Schnitzel Wiener Art“ (Viennese style schnitzel) or „Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein“ (Viennese schnitzel from pork).

schnitzel 16    Southern German, with „Spaetzle“ and Beetroot salad.

Similar dishes to the Wiener Schnitzel also include the Surschnitzel (from cured meat), and breaded turkey or chicken steaks. Similarly prepared dishes include the cotoletta alla milanese, the Schnitzel Cordon bleu filled with ham and cheese and the Pariser Schnitzel.

schnitzel -1   schnitzel 19

schnitzel -2   schnitzel -4
The above four pics show some restaurant deliveries. They are just ugly.
Not appetizing at all – and they should be fined and not served !!!

The American chicken-fried steak is often said to be closely related to Wiener Schnitzel, the result of the adaptation of the recipe by German or Austrian immigrants to the Texas Hill Country and to local available ingredients.

schnitzel 9        schnitzel 7
Some restaurants, from Vienna to Sydney and from Munich to New York serve these „BIG Schnitzel’s“. They have to hang over the plate and they are good tourist fun. But think – they can’t be a natural cut – so, they are made like the chicken nuggets are made !

schnitzel 14   Much better, original with peas and baked potatoes.

In Uruguay we use the „Milanese“ cuts from beef. But ask your butcher to let the trough the „Milanese machine“ twice. You don’t have to bash them at home then. The pork meat won’t go through this machine, you still have to use your mallet.

schnitzel 11   How about this one, with crawnberry sauce ?
schnitzel 4    Or this one with delicious potato salad ?
schnitzel 6    The Classic, with fries, ketchup and mayonnaise.

schnitzel 12
And finally a appetizing plate with Schnitzel, young potatoes, white asparagus and Sauce Hollandaise. But, make your own, it’s easy and you know now how to do. Getting hungry ?

Must See – Oktoberfest Munich

oktoberfest 8      Click on pics, most will supersize.

„It’s Open“. Since today at noon on September 19, 2015, opened by the Lord Mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, the beer runs. Following the good tradition, Mr. Reiter yelled “O’zapft is!” (“It is open!”) to the crowd in the Schottenhamel tent. And then the beer started to flow for 16 days in a row til October 4, 2015. It will be the 182nd festival. There were 24 occasions when it was cancelled due to wars or epidemics.

oktoberfest 7   The spirit of the Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest fair held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The 16-day festival runs from late September to the first weekend in October almost 7 million guests from Munich and around the world.

oktoberfest 28         200 years Oktoberfest anniversary.

How Oktoberfest Began.

The first Oktoberfest took place on October 17, 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese Charlotte Luise of Saxony-Hildburghausen.

oktoberfest 30 king ludwig queen therese luise       King Ludwig and Queen Therese Luise.

Ludwig would become King Ludwig I of Bavaria, reigning from 1825 – 1848. Munich’s citizens were invited to partake in the celebration, and the festivities, with horse races, music and dancing, were held on the expansive meadow in front of the city gates.

oktoberfest 17     The festival in its opening year 1810.

Unlike how it started back in the 19th century, why Oktoberfest now begins in September instead of October is for the generally milder weather. From 1819 onwards the citizens of Munich assumed responsibility for the organization of the festival.

oktoberfest 29a    The famous horse racing, the last one was in 1960.

The land was renamed Theresienwiese for Therese’s meadow, in honor of the queen. The multi-day festival became an annual event, and Theresienwiese has become the official grounds of Oktoberfest. Since 1850 the statue of Bavaria has watched over the Oktoberfest.

oktoberfest 24 1928      Oktoberfest waitresses in 1928.

Modern history of the Oktoberfest.

In 1885 electric lighting lit up the Oktoberfest for the first time. Since 1892 beer has been served in glass jugs (Mass). In 1913 the „Braurosl“ was build, the largest tent with over 12.000 seats. In 1950 the current traditional opening ceremony of the festival was introduced: „O’zapft is“.

oktoberfest 27 1960     „O’zapft is“, 1st time 1950 with mayor Thomas Wimmer.

On 26.of September 1980, at 22.19 precisely a bomb exploded in a dustbin in a toilet at the main entrance. The bomb was made from a vacuum filled fire extinguisher with 1,39kg of TNT. Thirteen people lost their lives, more than 200 were wounded. this attack was attributed to a right wing extremist, who worked alone and died during the attack.

oktoberfest 26 1980 bombexplod      Short after the bomb exploded in 1980.

While in the modern history of Oktoberfest, the festival has generally run for 16 days — there have been years when it has run longer. If the last day of the festival comes before German Unity Day (Oct. 3rd, which is the anniversary date of German reunification in 1990), the festival will generally run through the national holiday.

oktoberfest 3       Angela Merkel has a beer on German Unity day.

Today, locals call the great meadow wiesn for short and aptly call Oktoberfest, die Wiesn. Theresienwiese’s land area is about 420,000 square m. or about 4.5 million square feet. In the history of Oktoberfest the grounds have also been the site of public concerts and outdoor markets.

oktoberfest 31

Oktoberfest in Munich is still the largest public fair in the world, with almost 7 million visitors. Besides beer tents there are amusement park rides, both the fast and slower varieties, as well as an impressive array of food vendors from the area.

oktoberfest 22     oktoberfest 43

Traditional Bavarian and other German dishes often available at the festival include roast beef, roasted chicken, roast pork, duck, sausages, salads and of course baked goods such as pretzels, cakes, original tarts, and sweet and savory pies. The grounds welcome visitors with a grand arch at the main gates.

oktoberfest 13    oktoberfest 10

Munich marked Oktoberfest’s two hundredth year in 2010 with a special, bicentennial brew in the festival tents to commemorate Oktoberfest’s origins and the original Oktoberfest, with an historical horse race on the festival grounds. As a testament to the festival’s appeal to travelers from abroad, currently about one in six Oktoberfest attendees in Munich are from outside of Germany.

oktoberfest 48   The Welcome Gate to the Wies’n.

Some Oktoberfest FAQ.

From recent years we can predict the visitor traffic for 2015. The chart below may help you making your decision when to visit the fest.

oktoberfest 75             oktoberfest 74

There is no entry fee, but you should be prepared for usual costs, like
a typical evening for one person in 2014 was minimum 45 Euro:

2 beers, or similar drinks @ 10.00 Euro = 20.00 Euro
1 chicken, or similar food @ 15.00 Euro = 15.00 Euro
1 Brez’n (pretzel), or similar food @ 4.50 Euro = 4.50 Euro
2 trips on public transport @ 2.50 Euro = 5.00 Euro
Who said that Oktoberfest is cheap – no way ! Average for „a real fun evening“ and a „long day and/or night“ and some „souvenirs“ and for „two persons“ will be at least 200 euros,  and much more, so be prepared.

oktoberfest 11       Oktoberfest beer and snacks are all over Munich.

For obvious reasons, young kids or teenagers stay rarely in the evening. However, if they are 16 years or older, there is no problem at all. However, the German law prohibits to serve strong alcohol to them – beer is OK.

oktoberfest 33

oktoberfest 16   Typical Bavarian „Honoratioren“ = notables.

What to wear to Oktoberfest?

Men:
Checkered Shirt (plain white is also OK)
Leather trousers (with suspenders, without is also OK)
Off-white Slouch socks (pulled down)
Haferl Shoes (black)
No scarf (even if they sell it to you)

oktoberfest 34

Of course, this is theory. Most visitors come in leisure wear. But if you want „Lederhosen“ or a „Dirndl“ get them in a specialized shop or buy on time through ebay. NEW leather trousers are uncomfortable and won’t look good anyway.

Women:
Short-sleeved white blouse
Traditional dress (the Dirndl)
Pinafore
Sheer pantyhose
Elegant low-heeled loafers

oktoberfest 35

The lady’s Dirndl should fit perfectly – it should „show what lady’s have“, the fashion is manufactured for this – this is sexy tradition during the Oktoberfest. On the other hand, no one will harm you if you come in a usual outfit.

oktoberfest 55         oktoberfest 49a
Beautiful „hearts“. The blue one reads „Gruss vom Oktoberfest = Greetings from Oktoberfest“,
the pink one reads „Ich Liebe Dich = I Love You“.  And – a lovely PROST , that’s Oktoberfest!

If you don’t want to spend big money for an own Dirndl (the lady’s dress), you also can rent one. Get it per mail and send it back (cleaning not necessary), priced from 60euro onwards, from

oktoberfest 77  dresscoded.com. A good solution.

Reserved tables are marked with big signs indicating the name of the reservation, the size of the group, and the date and time when the reservation begins. Usually, reservations are void 30 minutes after the reservation time. You can have morning and evening sessions.

oktoberfest 37   A „reserved“ ticket on the table.

Be prepared to book on time. It is essential to have early enough your reservations made, especially for transport (flights) to and from Munich, for your accommodation, also motor home reservations etc.

oktoberfest 6      Who want’s to refuse giving her a tip ?

How much tip is common?

Tricky. If you’ve got reservations and vouchers, the tip is sometimes included. In this case you do not need to give extra tip, or just if you think the service was extraordinary. If tip is not included, the waitress will tell you what the tip is. In fact, it’s not really a tip – it’s more like a „service fee“. It should be not more than 10 to 15% of the beer or food price. And yes, a bit of extra tip will ensure that the waitress will always serve you in time and in quality.

oktoberfest 38   Voucher for 1/2 a chicken plus TIP-voucher.

Do not wear (supposedly) funny Oktoberfest hats! They will really make you stand out in the crowd as a real „tourist“ who knows nothing about the Oktoberfest.

oktoberfest 39         Ridiculous looking „tourists“ on the Oktoberfest.

Are there any general etiquette tips?

Most importantly, don’t be rude, especially not to the girls. This can get you faster out of a tent than you can say „hey!“. So, you should know your limits and not drink too much.
Be early at the fest, ideally before 4 pm, to catch a nice place.
If you have a formal reservation, be sharply on time. If you come too late, your seats are likely to be occupied.

oktoberfest 12    Thousands of visitors just in one tent.

Do not dance on the tables. Never ever. This is a hard rule. You may dance on the benches for as long as you wish, but do not step on the tables. This might get you removed from the tent really fast. For tables located in the first floor, there may be restrictions to prevent people from falling over the balcony.

oktoberfest 54    And one more of the big tents with thousands of seats.

Do not take a beer stein or glass with you (or anything else that does not belong to you). They are checking bags when you leave. If they find a glass, it is – legally speaking – theft. Should this happen to you, do not make a fuss about it. Usually, they just take the beer stein and let you go, but nothing can stop them from calling the police.

oktoberfest 47   Another tent full of celebrating crowd.

Beer Serving Hours are 10 am to 10:30 pm on weekdays, and 9 am to 10:30 pm on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Just on the opening Saturday they will start beer serving at noon.

„O – ZAPFT IS „, today on September 19, Dieter Reiter, mayor of Munich, opened officially the Oktoberfest 2015.

At 10:30 pm the band will stop playing, the lights will go on, and the waitresses will start to clean the tables around you. Typically you will have left by 10:50 pm. The only exception to this is the Käfer tent which closes at 1 am (last orders at 12:15 am).

The world’s most famous folk festival – Oktoberfest – is known for its giant mugs of beer.
But „giant“ applies to quite a lot at the event that runs this year.
This year, the world’s largest haunted house will be introduced to the „Wies’n“ fairgrounds, as will the fastest and highest giant swing on the planet.

And new on the menu this year is beer-flavored ice cream, flower-shaped cotton candy, and diabetes-friendly nuts fried in pear sugar.

Churches Uruguay

c 1 mvd prado   Iglesia de los Carmelitas, Prado, Montevideo.

Since we arrived in Uruguay I know that this is the most secular country in the Americas. Not as fanatic religious as others on this continent. Because of this, I was wondering to see so many churches all over the country.

c 40                                    Chihuahua 2
See the difference between two neighbors: Uruguay (very secular) and Paraguay (almost fanatic …..).
On the right, a fantastic looking (beautiful piece of art) church in Chihuahua.

After a bit of research one can organize them into 3 groups. First, the „monumental ones“ (Christian churches, mostly Catholic) build in the mid 19th century up to around 1920. Except a few, most of them are to big and to expensive to keep them in good state.

DSC00429     DSC00265_2
These are the big old ones, mostly build between 1850 and 1920, so as the one in San Jacinto or Minas.

Second, the „architectural freestyle ones“ build between the 1930’s and 1960’s, when the country and the population had much money and created a massive building boom. With wild constructions, some nice, some not, some insane. Same time when most better situated families build their 2nd or 3rd holiday home on the beach. We still find hundreds of these homes, left alone and rotten away. Same happens to the churches.

Atlantida 1              Atlantida 7
The freestyle ones, both Atlantida. See the post „An Innovative Brick Artist“, category Atlantida.

Third, the small churches or private buildings converted to a church service and very nice renovated or „kept in shape“ churches. I’ll show you in several pics all kinds of church buildings I found throughout the country during my travels.

DSC00166    c 16 nueva helvecia
Two little „chique“ ones.  In the middle of nowhere between Pinera and Merinos. Or in Nueva Helvecia.

Uruguay has no official religion; church and state are officially separated, and religious freedom is guaranteed. A 2008 survey by the INE of Uruguay showed Catholicism as the main religion, with 45.7% of the population; 9.0% are non-Catholic Christians, 0.6% are Animists or Umbandists (an Afro-Brazilian religion), and 0.4% Jewish. 30.1% reported believing in a god, but not belonging to any religion, while 14% were Atheist or Agnostic. Among the sizable.

The Candelaria church in Punta del Este. Inside not as high as usual churches, but still impressive.

The indigenous people who lived in the plains of Uruguay were decimated in the three hundred years following the colonization in the 16th century. The last mass killing took place in 1831, after the country’s independence in 1825. In the 19th century many Europeans migrated to Uruguay. It was a politically stable and prosperous country with an advanced welfare system.

Both claim to be the „oldest church in Uruguay“, left San Carlos and right Colonia del Sacramento.
c 21 Calera de las Huérfanas Colonia  c 21a
Who cares about the oldest one, can even be this one, Calera de las Huerfanas in Colonia, a Jesuit church,
which appears on an Uruguayan stamp.  Sadly, one again which is rotten to death.

After independence, anti-clerical ideas spread to Uruguay, particularly from France, further eroding the influence of the church. In 1837, civil marriage was recognized and in 1861 the state took over the running of public cemeteries. In 1907, divorce was legalized and in 1909, all religious instruction was banned from state schools.

c 4a colonia             c 4d colonia
Why investing in conservation, if building new is cheaper?  New-modern catholic church  in Colonia.

Under the influence of the innovative Colorado reformer José Batlle y Ordóñez (1903–1911), complete separation of church and state was introduced with the new constitution of 1917.

c 6a colonia old c uy     c 6c
One of the most photographed churches in Uruguay, Basilica del Santisimo Sacramento in Colonia.

In the 1960s an economic crisis occurred and a left-wing guerrilla emerged, the Tupamaros. The movement was repressed by the army, which seized power in 1973. Under the military dictatorship, which lasted until 1984, huge human rights violations took place. Since then, Uruguay is again a functioning democracy.

This is for sure the biggest church in Uruguay, Iglesia de Matriz, upfront of plaza constitucion in Montevideo.

The economy is essentially agricultural, with some manufacturing industry. Export consists of meat, dairy and leather products, wool, etc. Uruguay is the smallest country in Latin America, and political observers consider Uruguay the most secular country in the Americas.

c 35 mvd punta carretas            c 30 mvd nuestra senora del sagrado corazon
Another beautiful example of newer times, Nuestra Senora del Sagrado Corazon,
in Punta Carretas, direct across the shopping mall, Montevideo.

Uruguay’s secularization began with the relatively minor role of the church in the colonial era, compared with other parts of the Spanish Empire. The small numbers of Uruguay’s Indians and their fierce resistance to proselytism reduced the influence of the ecclesiastical authorities.

c 5 artigas  c 35a
Sagrado del Corazon in Artigas.  Massive and beautiful inside, well worth to visit.

The Catholic Church, which dates back to the beginning of colonization, is the largest church. The Methodists are the oldest Protestant church.
There is a large Waldensian community, which is part of the Waldensian Church in Italy, and therefore also of the WCC.
Pentecostals represent about 30 percent of the Protestant and Independent churches.
The Federation of Evangelical Churches is the oldest ecumenical body.

In 1998, a Council of Christian Churches was set up, with the participation of the Catholic and Anglican churches. There is also a Christian Association of Evangelical Churches, affiliated with the WEA.
The Orthodox churches are the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Moscow Patriarchate, and Armenian Apostolic Church.

Bierhaxn – WOW

D 1 Bamberg 26 haxn

After the posts about Bamberg several readers asked me for recipes, especially the one about „Bierhaxn“, or „Halloumi“ and „Schnitzel“. I am happy to answer and provide them.

Halloumi is easy to answer, it was already posted last November. Just click under TAGS on „Halloumi recipes“.   For the Schnitzel, I promise to post it a.s.a.p.

D 1 Bamberg 90    schnitzel 20 klosterbrau bamberg

German Bierhaxn.

Today lets start with the famous German Bierhaxn. Bierhaxn is German for Bier=beer and Haxn=knuckle, Bierhaxn=beerknuckle, the most wellknown dish during Munich Octoberfest. It is so easy to do. I will show you 2 slight different recipes named A and B. And I will for you add how to make a „Knoedel“ (dumpling) and how to make „Kraut“ (cabbage). It’s not the real „Sauerkraut“ but the typical one which is served in Bavaria with the „Haxn“. I prefer variation A because it’s the easiest one. Variation B is typical Bavarian again mostly served with „Bavarian Kraut“ and „Potato Dumplings“.

haxn 11     Typical Bavarian Bierhaxn menu.

Bierhaxn A.
1 1/2 kg pork , 2 large pork knuckles or 4 small ones,
2 onions, peeled and halved
5 cloves of garlic, peeled and halved
1 clove
5 bay leaves
1 teaspoon juniper berries
1/2 teaspoon cumin
2 tsp salt
some pepper, coarse from the mill

haxn 12      Wonderful tender meat.

Bierhaxn B.
2 large pork knuckles (each  800 g) or 4 small ones,
250 ml of water
1 tsp salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 onion
250 ml beer, strong beer c. 7-9 %

haxn 7   Freshly grilled knuckles out of the oven.

Dumplings.
1 kg potatoes
2 tbsp semolina
200 g potato flour or other starch
salt

haxn 16  Bavarian potato dumplings.

White Cabbage.
1 head white cabbage (about 1 kg)
150 g streaky bacon
1 large onion
2 tablespoons goose fat (or lard)
1 small apple
1 tablespoon sugar
3/8 L broth
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon cumin (whole seeds)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Pepper and salt

haxn 18    The white (some say green) cabbage.

How to do.

Bierhaxn A.
Give water in a large pan. Then add onions, garlic and spices to the water. Bring to a boil and briefly give knuckles into the water (they should be covered with water) and simmer on lowest heat for about 90 minutes. Just keep the water very hot – not boiling anymore.

haxn 4  Pork knuckles fresh from the butcher.

Just before the time is up, preheat your oven up to 180 to 200 ° C. Take knuckles from the water, drain them and cut the skin carefully crosswise. Then, in a roasting pan, crisp for a good hour in the oven til they are really browned. Just made them today for us, can’t wait !

haxn 5    Mixing together and boiling the broth.

Bierhaxn B.
Cut the skin of the pig’s trotters rhomboid crosswise, salt and pepper. Give 250 ml of water in a roasting pan, put in the knuckles and roast in a preheated oven at 200 ° C for about 150 minutes. Here you need now to pour every 15 minutes  the knuckles with the meat juices.

haxn 3   Cooking the knuckles in the broth.

Peel the onion into quarters and give after about 90 minutes to the knuckle. After 2 hours, increase the temperature to 250 ° C. The brush the meat every 10 minutes with beer and finish frying. serve the finished knuckles hot, fresh out the oven.

haxn 2   Cooked and skin cutted, ready for grilling.

Loosen the meat juices with some water, pour through a sieve into a saucepan, bring to a boil, season to taste and serve unattached to the knuckle as a fine sauce. same method you can use for the variation A to receive a delicious sauce. You did everything right when the meat falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. The crispy skin is another delicatesse.

haxn 6   Doesn’t look this grilled „Haxn“ not inviting?

Dumplings.
For the potato dumplings cook the potatoes, peel and press through a potato ricer. Generously add salt, semolina and potato flour. Add potato flour as far as flour give up the dumpling dough is softness and dryness. Then put dumplings in boiling salted water and simmer for about 25 minutes.  They should swim above. Remove with a slotted spoon and let evaporate easily. if you have leftovers, slice them into 3 or 4 thick slices and brown them in a light oiled pan. Delicious side dish for a next meal!

haxn 17    haxn 15

White cabbage.
First, cut the cabbage in four parts and remove the hard brew. Then cut the cabbage into thin strips and set aside.
Then cut the bacon into small cubes and peel and cut the onion also into small cubes.
In a large pot the goose fat (or lard) is heated and the bacon is added there to and is omitted. Then sprinkle over the sugar and brown lightly.

haxn 19  Sliced cabbage.

Add the onions there to and let them sweating.
Now add the cabbage strips to the pan and braise. For this purpose, they are frequently stirred. When the cabbage starts to become soft, pour the broth.
Peel the apples, remove seeds, cut into cubes and also admit. Season with salt, pepper, vinegar and cumin.

haxn 23     Smoked bacon ready to cube.

Now reduce the heat  and a cover your pan. This cabbage needs now to braise 30 to 40 minutes. When it’s finished, the Bavarian cabbage is soft, but does not bite.
Finally, the cornstarch is stirred in 3 teaspoons cold water and mixed into the cabbage to bind the remaining liquid. Season again with salt and pepper.

haxn 22   The cabbage mixture before braising.

While carbon formerly was considered a poor man’s food, the Bavarian cabbage can be found today in noble restaurants.
Not everyone can withstand the cabbage equally well. Because fibers are contained in the carbon that humans can not digest or has difficulties arise in some people after eating cabbage bloating and / or unpleasant odors. If expand the unpleasant odors, which is bad for the bystanders, for those who suffer it indicates the end of abdominal pain.

haxn 21    Ready to serve.

With original Bavarian cabbage it comes rarely to the unpleasant side effects. Because spices such as cumin, ginger or fennel prevent bloating. Cumin seeds are abundant contained here, they not only taste delicious, but also ensure proper digestion.

haxn 20   Delicious every time, served warm or cold.

Tips.
Even in Uruguay I had never problems to get the pork knuckles. Every butcher cut them for us on a few day demand. Our German butcher in Maldonado also provided lard if you order in advance. But, you have to tell them very clear to „leave skin on and on the bone“ !! Down here some different options how we serve „Bierhaxn“ in germany .

haxn 8   All over Germany, you find it served with red cabbage and sauce.
haxn 9   Northern German style with fresh salad and fried potatoes.
haxn 14  Frankfort style with mustard and potato salad.
haxn 10   American style with potato salad and sweet corn.
haxn 13   East German style with red cabbage and mash potatoes.
haxn 24
Again the Bavarian style, mouthwatering decorated, with dumplings in sauce and fresh made kraut.

DSC01573b        D 1 Bamberg 86

Don’t forget a delicious beer with your fantastic meal.  Just made this meal  for us today.  My beer today is the local Volcanica (coming up in a following post) out of the „Gnom“ glass.  Can’t wait to dig in.  How about you ?

Must See – Bamberg 2

GUTES ESSEN UND TRINKEN HAELT LEIB UND SEELE ZUSAMMEN.
GOOD FOOD AND DRINKS WILL KEEP BODY AND SOUL TOGETHER.

D 1 Bamberg 96  Bratwurst, Kraut or a cheese plate and Rauchbier.

We already heard about the Seven Hills of Bamberg, which are Cathedral Hill, Michaelsberg, Kaulberg/Obere Pfarre, Stefansberg, Jakobsberg, Altenburger Hill and Abtsberg. We learned about all in the first part of this post, except the Altenburg.

D 1 Bamberg 88     The Altenburg.

The first mention of the Altenburg was in 1109, although it is likely that it was built on the spot of an earlier palisade castle. It first served as what is known is German as a „Fliehburg“. This is a castle that was not regularly inhabited, but served mainly for city defense as a place where local residents could flee to in times of danger.

D 1 Bamberg 89     Inside the castle Altenburg.

In 1251, the Bamberg „Fürstbischöfe,“ the sovereign bishops of Bamberg, acquired the castle. From 1305 to 1553, it was the residence of the bishops. In 1553, during the Second Margrave War, the army of Albert Alcibiades, Margrave of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, burnt the castle down. Afterward the castle was used as a prison for a while.

D 1 Bamberg 87    D 1 Bamberg 90
Altenburg restaurant,  the Knight’s Hall and a fresh grilled halloumi-vegetable plate,  great summer dish.

In 1801, the Bamberg physician Adalbert Friedrich Marcus acquired the decaying castle and restored it from the ground up. The author E. T. A. Hoffmann, who was friends with Marcus, felt so drawn to the castle that he frequently stayed for a long time in one of the wall towers during the years 1808 to 1813. Today the castle is open for public tours. There is also a restaurant in the castle called the „Restaurant Altenburg.“ The restaurant also manages the so-called Knights Hall, used mostly for festive occasions such as weddings or other celebrations.  Now let’s come to the „other important side“ of Bamberg – the BEER.

D 1 Bamberg 98    Bamberg beer – just mouthwatering !

Bamberg, the Capital of Beer.

The history of the Bamberg brewing dates back to the year 1039 as the Bamberg canon Ouldaricus decreed that at his death the population free beer should be served. Already in the 12th century of Bamberg beer was exported as a valuable asset to distant lands.

D 1 Bamberg 22  Some of the great beers of Bamberg.

Since then a lot has happened in the brewery landscape that had its heyday in the 19th century with 65 breweries and 22 beer cellars. To date, a well-known beyond the city limits beyond specialty beer has received – the smoked beer – whose root dates back to the Middle Ages. The malt could only be stopped by heating over an open fire at its germination process (due to lack of technical possibilities). Since the fire was not sufficiently separated from the germinated barley, this assumed a distinct smoky flavor, which later can be found in your glass.

D 1 Bamberg 80 wilde rose keller  Wild Rose Cellar beer garden. What an atmosphere !

The Reinheitsgebot (purity law) from 1487, which allows the beer ingredients only hops, malt and water. In the 18th century the city was one of the largest hops trading centers of Southern Germany.

D 1 Bamberg 83 purity law   Bavarian purity law established in 1487.

So it is not surprising that already became the poet Jean Paul in the 19th century into raptures and the beer the cathedral city praised by exclaiming: „Heavens, what a beer!“
Currently nine breweries in the city of Bamberg and another 90 in the surrounding area show that Bamberg is the stronghold of an incomparable variety of beers and therefore has the highest density of breweries in the world.

D 1 bamberg 30 bam hoernla
One Bamberg speciality are the „Bamberger Hoernla“, a potato brand and a potato dish out of the area.

Bamberg Breweries.

Bamberg has a very historic cultural scene, especially the restaurant scene is well known for own specialties and high class Bavarian dishes. Multi-faceted and seasonal beers characterize the offer.
From top-fermented full beer (Kaiserdom), smoked beer (Schlenkerla and  Spezial), dark beer (Klosterbräu), lager (Greifenklau) over Zwergla (Fässla) to the classics Kellerbier (Maisel), wheat beer (Mahr’s Brau) and Pils (Keesmann).

To permanently available beers they offer seasonal specialties such as Mai Bock (strong beer in May) or Bockbier (during hunting season) in autumn or Christmas Beer for example. Overall, more than 60 different beers just waiting to be tasted. Visitors and locals alike, it is owed by your loyalty to local, traditionally brewed beer that this diversity has survived until today. This region has the highest brewery density in the world.

Every year on 23rd of April bamberg celebrates the „Day of the Beer“. On this day you can taste everything available and dive into „beerlife“ as deep as you like, its beer heaven.
All this makes Bamberg for many  the actual „Capital of Beer“.

That museum is located in restored historic vaults of the former Benedictine Brewery on Michelsberg. On 900 square meters of exhibition equipment and historical developments in the fields of brewing, malting and Büttnerei (how to make wooden barrels) be shown. From the production of malt to the finished beer, the production process of the malt and beer production is explained clearly.

Bierkeller on Stephan’s Berg and on Kaulberg.

The origin of the beer cellar is thanks to a royal decision. Ludwig I of Bavaria had in fact determined that beer could only be brewed in the winter months between „Michaeli and Georgi“. And the people did not want to give up the pleasure of bottom-fermented beer, which has a temperature of between four and eight degrees needed to ferment, leaving the resourceful Brauer deep cellar caves in the rock beat.

Here outsourced and matured beer in barrels under huge chunks of natural ice, which was knocked out of rivers and lakes in winter. To protect against the sun’s heat, the Brauer scattered light gravel on the cellar caves and planted shady chestnut or linden. On this pleasant place the fresh beer was served in the summer. The thing spoke quickly spread, and soon attracted multitudes of thirsty „in the basement“.

With a shake of the head comment tourists again and again the fact that the Bamberger and their guests may eat snacks brought to the cellars. Also this tradition dates back to King Ludwig I.. To gain restaurants without private Bierkeller a competitive advantage, he forbade the serving of food to the provisional places Schank. But the citizens were resourceful and then packed bread, sausage and cheese in baskets before they strolled with family and good friends to the basement. It has not changed the way until today.

The Bamberg Beer War.

As Bamberger beer war is called an episode that took place in Bamberg 1907. The Bamberger breweries wanted to increase the price for 0,5 liters of beer (one Seidla) on October 1,  by 1 penny (from 10 to 11 penny’s). The last price increase was 110 years ago, in 1797 , unbelievable  !!!

D 1 Bamberg 7 Beerwar    Beer War in Bamberg, October 1907.

The Bamberg population was shocked because of these drastic measures. They refused to pay the new price and for that Bamberg breweries went into strike. Instead of „expensive“ Bamberger beer, they  now offered  the cheaper beer  from Forchheim, which could be sold very well at this time, unlike the Bamberg beer.

After a week the strike Bamberger breweries gave way on October 7th in 1907 and withdrew the price increase. The cost of half a liter was 10 Penny’s (German Pfennig) again. I couldn’t find out for how long.

Wish we had quality food like such and especially prices like this in Uruguay.

This is one of the most beautiful and ethnic restaurants in Bamberg. Already founded in 1490, housed the beer war, changed owners a few times and still alive in the historic city. I’ll show you an extract of one of the most beautiful restaurant menus one can find in Bamberg. It completely speaks for itself, sadly no English copy was available.

Brauerei Fässla.

DSC01576   Brauerei Faessla with wonderful iron work above.

We call Fässla the gnome brewery. Those gnoms are all over the place, on the walls, the glassware, the website. It’s pretty funny.
The little guys must work some magic on the beer though.

DSC01574  Big portion of „Schaeuferla“ for 8,90 euro only – wow!!!

The „Dunkel“ beer hit the spot with its fresh bready and nutty character. The place has guest rooms upstairs so you could stay there on your visit.  This brewery restaurant has a small beer garden in the rear and for sure the most locals as guests. They know where to get best prices and quality.

Brauerei Spezial.

DSC01577        Spezial brewery outside.

You gotta’ love how close everything is in Bamberg.  Spezial is directly across the street from Fässla . My recommended hotel, the Best Western Bamberg is just 80m up the road.
Fässla was great but we were in Bamberg and wanted some Rauchbier , which Fässla didn’t provide. Fortunately Spezial scratched the itch. It’s more dimly lit and quieter than Fässla. It seemed like more of a regulars’ place.

D 1 bamberg 17 spezial    Famous for Bamberg, the Rauchbiers.

The Weissbier was especially interesting. It’s a solid Hefeweizen base beer and a touch of smoke adds in a great complexity. The Maerzen is their more typical smoked beer with the requisite bacon and BBQ taste, I liked it very much.

D 1 Bamberg 78          D 1 Bamberg 79
Warming beer to the right temperature, left with a „hot water“ element (to use also with ice water and cool your beer down to your right temperature), right the electrical one.

Then there is the mystery of the beer  that the waitress was heating up with an electric heating element. Tourists often do not figure out what that is, especially Americans (to shy to ask, because they are known for „we know everything already“).  It’s a culture thing, Germans like beer „COOL“ but not „ICY“ or „ICE COLD“ like other nations, especially Australians. So, some locals let the waitress „warm up“ their beers to a „cool“ level. As colder you drink a beer as more you loose the taste.  Don’t mix it up with warm or flat beer.

Brauerei Schlenkerla.

You know when you’ve arrived because it’s got the most tourists. There is a beer garden in the back which was full so we found a spot inside. Like the other breweries it’s small, wooded, and dark inside. There are rooms seemingly tucked away everywhere.

Another Bamberg specialty – baked onion  with spicy ground beef and bacon, side baked potatoes or mash.

The Maerzen was fantastic. You could definitely tell a difference in freshness between it and the beer you’ll get in the States or else – out of cans. The food was top-notch as well.

Brauerei Ambrausianum.

D 1 Bamberg 19 ambrausianum         Ambrausianum brewery.

This was the last brewery we visited and the most unique of the four. It’s  the only brew pub in the city. Ambrausianum a more modern establishment. Even, dare I say, more American looking. Two bright copper tanks anchor the middle of the pub. There is a small patio area out front but it’s doesn’t have a large beer garden. Still inviting atmosphere.

D 1 Bamberg 28    Inside the Ambrausianum.

I was happy to see they had a sampler (which they call the “Bierprobe”) so I went with that. Between the Dunkel, Weizen, and Helles, my favorite was the Dunkel.  The Weizen and Helles was also very good. The food was also good.  Definitely stop at Ambrausianum if you visit Bamberg.

View from the Old Town Hall bridge, left the Blue House, right Kunigunde statue, straight on Little Venice.

My most favorite Bamberg place – the Old Town Hall.

D 1 Bamberg 93        Old Town Hall from southwest.

This most unusual building, the Old Town Hall, which was built in the middle of the 14th century, is quite a curiosity. The frescoes that adorn the facades are as amazing as the story behind the building’s construction. A very impressive building and for sure one of the most photographed tourist attractions.

DSC01600  Old Town Hall from southeast.

According to legend the bishop of Bamberg did not grant the citizens any land for the construction of a town hall. This prompted the townsfolk to ram stakes into the river Regnitz to create an artificial island, on which they built the town hall they so badly wanted. This is defenately a MUST SEE in Bamberg.

D 1 Bamberg 12 City hall                   D 1 Bamberg 92
Bridge gate and tower of the Old Town Hall and the famous fresco’s on town hall building.

The Old Town Hall’s frescoes never fail to impress as they lend the facades a three-dimensional quality achieved with trompe d’oeil architecture. A special detail is a continual source of mirth among tourists, the leg of a cherub protrude out of the wall as a sculpture. Today the Old Town Hall accommodates the prestigious rococo hall and the Ludwig Collection. I hope, you will have a chance once, to see this great city in person.

A beach walk with the dogs was impossible this morning. Whole beach
was gone. 1/2 a meter under water and foam. Rio de la Plata – not
much „silver“ to see from our Silver River.
