My dear friends Doug and Syd started a discussion about incongruous English words in Uruguayan advertising. See Dougs blog http://www.mydayinuy.com. Since I found no way to upload photos to his blog with my comment, I will do it here. I like your blog Doug and your comments Syd, you know, this is not against your opinion, just my attempt to supplement your ignition of this theme.

“ ASK BETTY „, as a company name. In the windows you can see their services – in Spanish ?
This time boys, I do not understand why you think it’s unusual or inappropriate to mix the languages. I think it’s more the normal influence of the „international communication language English“. And Uruguay tries to be open, communicative and international.
Now we know, its SPRING TIME in Uruguay.
Its aloud to use „eye catchers“ in advertising, every one does. Uruguay has for a long time two currencies, as we know. You can pay almost everywhere in Pesos and US Dollars. I like that and I like also the modern way of an international mixture.
Whatever it means „Pinilo Go“ !!
We can see that here in Uruguay for a long time and its increasing. More and more Uruguayans speak and understand English. Its a positive trend to participate with the „outside“ world.
„shop for the used ones“. Funny, but eye catching !
Many words are already used in daily communication with the Spanish, like „offer, outlet, sale, car, cash, club, pool, sauna, self-storage, wow and many many more. I like to call it the natural mixing of cultures and the „world communication Language“.
How would one translate „“WOW““ in to Spanish ?
I like to see it positive, nothing against your opinion and comments. You are totally right, sometimes it looks very funny. See the pics, which I like to share with you. Click on pics.

Fantasie company name in English, you are right Syd, just to be exotic. And well known De Voto market.

Same rights for everyone. A pet shop as well as a self storage.
How would this advertising sound, „tienda de mascotas“ instead of „pet shop“ ?
Or „sí mismo almacenamiento“ instead of „self storage“ ?

English ist not enough. Now the Germans come with their language too. Zentrum sounds much more exotic then just centro. And the point is – SALES – sales meens being unique, attractive, different and catch customers attention !! Whats wrong with that, everyone try’s it and that’s legit. Welcome to international Uruguay !

Good article, Mike. The Ask Betty repair place changed to that name specifically targetting female expat customers according to an article I read in Spanish.
