Mac and Blue – Comments

When I wrote the last article about my blue cheese pasta, I could not guess what reaction I unleashed with it. Many comments, lots of photographs and complete recipes.

It will blow the borders of my post to bring all of it and it also is not possible to have the pictures shown through „comment section“ in my blog. That’s why I decided to share with you here most of the ideas, readers sent me the last week. Hope you enjoy it as I did.

Gunnar and Aina sent me this pic. Swedish style mac and cheese with Swedish Meatballs (Svenska Kottbullar) in a skillet, sprinkled with fresh spring onions and melted  „Herrgardsost“ cheese under the grill. Myuy: Love it guys – mmhh lecker!

This idea came from Pete. Mac and cheese with green asparagus. Myuy: Looks delicious !

Mac and cheese with chicken and spinach, very creamy and sent by Hermann. Myuy: Thanks very much !

Italian idea from Luigi. mac and cheese with rucola and pine nuts. Myuy: Sadly I can’t find pine nuts in Uruguay. Looks interesting Luigi !

Mac and cheese with pork and asperagus, sent by Fantastico. Myuy: Never tried this before, looks great !

This is different, sent by my sister. A Latvian Pilmeni variation, our mother used to make on special days. Its also mac and cheese folks. Filling is ricotta, Gorgonzola (a German blue cheese) and minced walnuts, then sprinkled with a hot dressing of bacon, spring onion and melted brown butter. Myuy: WOW – that is definitely mouthwatering my dear !

This idea came from Plainchicken. A mac and cheese PIZZA, sprinkled with bacon. Myuy: That looks very delicious my friends, I will surely try it myself !

A mac and cheese variation with roasted breadcrumbs by ME. Myuy: Never tried this one !

Very easy recipe. Mac and cheese with chicken breast and blue cheese, sent by Bernhard. Myuy: That’s how we like it to do from time to time, very quick to make and so delicious !

The gourmet variation sent by Sajeeda from Mauritius. Mac and cheese with lobster. Myuy: What an insane recipe, it looks really mouthwatering. I would love to taste it, but no lobster in Uruguay – very sad – thanks Sajeeda !

My recent experiment was the above one. Swiss Gruyere, chicken and blue cheese with slices of pear, drizzled with a bit of sweet chilli sauce. Sounds insane too, but pears are going so well with blue cheese. Baguette and a very dry white wine rounded off this meal !

Mathis send this pic to me. A new book ?? But both of us couldn’t find it anywhere, not even Amazon. So what – is it new ? In print ? Or very old – or what. Would be interesting !
However, I hope we all could inspire you to try different „mac ’n cheeses“ !

Mac and Blue

This is some comfort food everybody likes, macaroni and cheese (mac-and-cheese). I learned to like it in the 60’s during several trips around the US. Now, grown up, I still like it, but a bit sophisticated here and there. By example pasta with blue cheese and bacon. To my opinion its the perfect combo for this killer mac-and-cheese recipe.

It really doesn’t matter which pasta you choose, important is that you pick a „good soaking“ one, like shown here.

Ingredients:

250gram (8 oz) bacon, diced
350ml (12-ounce) can 2% evaporated milk
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

  Delicious fresh made bacon.

pinch of chilli powder (or cayenne pepper)
250gram (8 oz) macaroni, farfalle, rigatoni, rotini, conchiglie
or any other – good soaking – pasta (see above)
1 tablespoon butter
155 gram (5 oz) crumbled blue cheese
125 gram (4 oz) freshly-grated sharp aged cheddar or Parmesan cheese

Left some aged, sharp cheddar and right Parmesan „Gaucho“ which we buy here in Uruguay.

How to do.

Heat the bacon in a skillet, stirring frequently, until crispy (5-7 minutes).
In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, egg, salt, pepper and chilli powder.
Meanwhile, cook the pasta „al dente“ according to instructions or your experience.

Whisking together the 2 cheeses (roughly crumbled is fine) with all the other ingredients.

When the pasta is cooked, drain it and return it to the pot, reduce heat to medium-low.
Immediately add the butter, and toss until the butter is melted.
Pour in the evaporated milk mixture and stir until combined.
Now you can decide if you cook on like described here, or poor all into a big bowl and bake in the oven, preheated 180 C (350 F) about 20-25 minutes.

Bavaria Blue cheese we buy here in Uruguay.

Or continue cooking over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally (3-5 minutes), or until the sauce comes to a simmer.
Remove pan from heat and add in the cheeses.
Stir until cheeses melted, then stir in the cooked bacon.

We bake the combination in the oven instead the pot.

Tips.

  Mouthwatering delicious.

Serve immediately, garnished with a bit extra bacon and blue cheese if desired. Have this easy and delicious meal with a glass of dry white wine or a cool beer.  Enjoy !

Hurri-Tai-Clone

What the heck means Hurri-Tai-Clone ? Not more then a shortcut of Hurricane-Taifun-Cyclone. I could have taken many more words, but it’s anyhow confusing. What is the meaning of all these different designations ?  Since weeks we can follow the news about hurricanes in the Caribbean and the US, Orkans in Europe, Typhoons in Asia and many other disasters around the world. I was interested what the meaning is of all these different storms. I like to share some brief explanations with you.

  Typhoon Usagi hits Southern China.

What storm is which?

A hurricane rages in Europe. A tornado rather in the US. But where exactly belong typhoons and what is actually a sandstorm? An overview of the disambiguation.

Click on pics to supersize your view.

Storm is called meteorologists every wind from a speed of 75 kilometers per hour (Beaufort wind force 9). At over 117 km / h (12 Beaufort) it is a hurricane. From then on, the naming becomes confusing. Although it is mostly a matter of how a storm is shaped, in which area of the world it rages and what it carries with it. But at least in the media, a cyclone can rage in the Mediterranean instead of in the Indian or Pacific Ocean, and some European storms are also known as hurricanes.

While in the US hurricane Irma raged, same time its own hurricane hits Tuscany in Italy.

Whirlwind or Vortex.

Actually every wind phenomenon, in which air circles quickly around an axis. Mostly tropical hurricanes are meant. They are formed on the sea, where air rises above warm water, and more and more air is carried along and rotated by the rotation of the earth. If the up to 1000 km vortexes on coasts meet, they can make enormous destruction, as we can see in the Caribbean recently. Just today (20th of September 2017) hurricane Maria makes landfall in Porto Rico as a hurricane category 4 ( just 3 km/h less then 5).

Maria today, 20th of September 2017.

Hurricane.

A tropical vortex that occurs in the North Atlantic or the Northeast Pacific. The typical season lasts from late May to late November and brings one to two dozen hurricanes, which are given initial names in alphabetical order. In 2005 there were counted over 30. One of the worst was No. 11: Katrina, completely destroying New Orleans and killing over 1000 people. This year, Harvey, Irma and Maria, the crimes are still unpredictable. And the next ones are already on the march.

Hurrican Irma just of the coast of Florida.

Typhoon or Taifun.

In Eastern and Southeast Asia the tropical cyclones are called typhoons. On average, they are even bigger, even stronger and bring even more rain than hurricanes or cyclones. Meteorologists, at Supertaifun Haiyan in November 2013, measured up to 380 kilometers wind-speed per hour. In the Philippines, he killed thousands of people and makes millions homeless.

After super-taifun Haiyan in the Philippines.

Cyclone.

Cyclone in the Mediterranean? A translation error. Storms „Cleopatra“, which in November 2013 floods Sardinia cities and kills 18 people, is not a whirlwind and does not come from the Indian Ocean or South Pacific. The cyclones there are more deadly than any other hurricane: 2008, the cyclone Nargis in Myanmar killed 100,000 people.

  Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.

Tornado.

Air vortex, which arise over land, are called tornadoes, in Germany also Windhose, in the USA Twister. They are usually smaller than their siblings, but they are faster – up to 500 km/h – and extremely unpredictable. Tornadoes arise wherever there is a thunderstorm. The USA counts more than 1000 tornado’s a year, Germany several dozen.

Left a typical tornado in the US.   Right a lightning-tornado ignites the Australian desert.

Orkan.

The word orkan (likewise hurricane) comes from South America, from „huracan“, the wind god of the Maya. But Orkan stands today for strong storms in Central Europe, sometimes around 300 km/h fast. They occur mainly in autumn and winter, when hot tropics meet with icy polar air. For years, they have been targeting more extreme damage, such as Kyrill 2007: 47 dead, 10 billion euro damage to property. or, a few weeks ago, Orkan Sebastian over Northern Europe – bigger then hurricane Irma.

      Orkan Sebastian in Germany.

Blizzard.

A rare, violent snowstorm, often in strength of an Orcan, with heavy snow-making. Especially feared in North America. There, at the end of January 1977, the Great Lakes Blizzard lamented several US federal states and large areas in Canada for days, bringing home snow drifts and killing 30 people.

Blizzard in the US. A complete „stand still“.

Sandstorm.

Spectacular sand storms like in China are mostly dust storms, which can reach the air miles from the ground and can transport millions of tons of material. One will also find sandstorms in Australia or in North Africa. Some desert sand from the Sahara can come down over Central Europe. A real sandstorm is a near-ground wave of sand. However, it becomes so dense that it can make breathing impossible, disturb mobile radio networks and make roads impassable.

  Sandstorm in China.

Hailstorm.

On July 12, 1984, damp air, strong winds, and labile air strata lead to the greatest damage to German insurances. Just at the Hagelsturm (hailstorm) in Munich, half a day long tennisball-sized hailcorns thundered down. A quarter of a million cars are dented afterwards, 70.000 houses were damaged and hundreds of people injured.

  After the Munich hailstorm.

Tropical Storm.

That can be everything as described above. But it must be less in wind-speed then a hurricane or a typhoon and it occurs in tropical areas. The weather prophets call it a tropical Storm up to 117 km/h, above this wind speed it changes into a hurricane. Most of the known hurricanes, by example Irma few weeks ago, size down over land from a hurricane to a tropical storm.

Very rare, 3 hurricanes on the same weather-chart.  Left: Hurricane Katia cat 1 (tropical storm). Middle: Hurricane Irma cat 5.   Right: Hurricane Jose cat 4.
Tropical Storm seen at Bondi Beach Sydney, Australia. This one didn’t reach the beach. The beach stayed calm and had permanent sunshine.

Lightning Storm.

Lightning storm within a tropical storm, seen over Brisbane, Australia.

Orkan Sebastian.

The Orkan „Sebastian“, who came over Northern Europe last week was greater than Hurricane „Irma“. not as intensive, but the diameter was immense. In one aspect, the autumn storm even surpasses Hurricane „Irma“, who raged in the Caribbean and Florida over the past few days.

Sebastian over Northern Europe. Right, an oil platform in the North Sea.

Hurricane Floyd.

Along with the loss of homes, Hurricane Floyd created an agricultural nightmare. Unimaginable numbers of livestock from across Eastern North Carolina drowned in the flood – an estimated 30,000 hogs, 700,000 turkeys, and 2.4 million chickens.

Over 700.000 drowned turkeys in North Carolina.

Officials were faced with the grim task of collecting the animal bodies and incinerating them 24 hours a day in 3 counties to avoid a threat to public health. Thousands of farms were affected when the flood waters erased years of careful landscaping and planning of fields in a matter of a few short days.

Some hogs could escape onto a stye roof.

Tobacco crop losses were estimated at $98 million; livestock losses $8.5 million; total crop losses $432 million and total agricultural losses of $634 million for 44 of the 66 North Carolina counties that were declared disaster areas.

Three Banana Countries.

Above are a few examples only, they hit back year by year and year by year stronger and worst. The weather around the world turns just crazy and still some idiots claim that we have no Climate Change, its just „Fake News“ ! They even stepped out of „The World Climate Protection Agreement“. Only 3 country’s, of the whole world’s 195 country’s, are not participating.

Nicaragua – Syria – USA !!

Daniel Ortega and Bashar el Assat, two of the apostates.
And the THIRD ONE is ….. guess who ! After all the disasters, we had the last few weeks and we will have, in the US, his comment was :
„We have had always strong storms“ !

Paris climate accord or Paris climate agreement, is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020.

Richard Branson on his Island, after hurricane Irma.

“Climate change is real,” Branson said on CNN’s “News Day” Tuesday. “Ninety-nine percent of scientists know it’s real. The whole world knows it’s real except for maybe one person in the White House.”

This is real, Mr. President Trump, not „fake news“.  In your own country – „America First“ !!  What now ?

Branson, who rode out Hurricane Irma and now hurricane Maria in a concrete bunker (as one knows, it’s his wine cellar) on his private Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands, said it was an “indescribable” experience.

„O’zapft is“!

First rain, then beer in torrent.

Today the Munich Oktoberfest 2017 starts in spite of bad weather relaxed and cheerful. Costume: Forthcoming. Security: No incidents. German election campaign: During the „Wiesn“ officially no topic.

Already five before twelve – when Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter is in the tapping box at the Oktoberfest. The topic of security is held by the responsible parties until the start of the world’s biggest folk festival on Saturday.

With two strokes OB Dieter Reiter tapped the first Wiesn barrel and handed it over to Horst Seehofer.

Minister-President Horst Seehofer, guest of honor at the first tapping, still had a conversation with the security forces.

Reiter, who had been waiting for the Prime Minister, joked: „Seehofer had either simply left more time when he entered the carriage in a wet-cold autumn weather – or he has had the slower horses“.

The first tapping – Seehofer and Reiter.

The beer flows at 12.00 sharp.

At twelve o’clock sharp, while the rain dries outside, the beer is pouring in: with two beatings, Reiter rides the first keg of beer – and strikes with Seehofer on a peaceful meadow.  All pictures above are courtesy of TZ-Munich, information from GMX.

The greatest wish of all:  that nothing will happen !

German Embassy in Washington D.C., United States.

The German interior ministry says that „The German government’s offices in the United States are currently seeing a significant increase in legal queries related to citizenship issues.“
And Reuters reports that applications from Germans stripped of their citizenship during the Nazi-era and their descendants have risen sharply since the election.
Through June 2017, at least 100 people living in the U.S. have applied for German citizenship each month.
German foreign ministry data showed that 1.190 applicants applied for citizenship in the first eight months of 2017.

Deutschland

Afraid of the language ?

Most people are afraid, because we know that speaking and understanding the local language is a massive plus !
But – first – about 60% of the German population can help you in English, by statistics.
But – second – another 20% will understand what you mean, if you are patient, trying to speak slow and „clean“ English.

Don’t expect that everyone understands „your quick mumbling home slang“ !!

Am I going to be fine without speaking German if I come to Germany?

One of the biggest worries for travelers to Germany as well as expats here is the language. I often get asked about whether the Germans speak English. This question gets asked in different forms, but the short answer is yes.

For most Germans that are not fluent in English and yet college level educated, the amount of English they understand is much more than they can speak.

Incredible how many words are the same in English or German – Part 1.

What does this mean for travelers?

Germany is definitely a country that you can travel in without any knowledge of German. People in the tourism industry will almost definitely speak passable English for their area of knowledge. Larger cities and higher educated people will speak more English. Signs are still in German, but you will find people to be quite helpful with directions.

From A to Z – part 2. It’s all about a bit of exercise.

What does this mean for living in Germany longer term?

Ignoring the job aspect and the visa aspect, it is technically possible to live there without much German. It is however not so much fun. Smaller towns will be much more difficult than a place like Berlin or Frankfurt. It is well worth learning the language.

First thing first: Learn to pronounce the alphabet.

Though with the above mentioned widespread English proficiency, a little knowledge can go a long way. It is totally worth learning the language and getting into the culture through the language, but to actually live here without it is definitely possible.

Now, go to a Cafe and order a „Flammkuchen“ !

Must See – San Marino

San Marino is a micro-state surrounded by Italy. It is the oldest surviving state and constitutional republic in the world. The country capital is the City of San Marino, and the largest city in this state is Dogana. The population is just around 30.000 inhabitants.

San Marino, just a few kilometers from Rimini.

Monte Titano is a beautiful mountain of the Apennines. It has three parks on each lays an ancient tower. It is the highest peak (755 meters) in San Marino. The Guaita or Rocca is San Marino’s first and oldest fortress tower. It is one of San Marino’s most famous landmarks, so make sure you visit and enjoy its beauty.

  The Guaita or Rocca.

In the heart of the City of San Marino is the palazzo Pubblico- this is the town hall and here is the official Government. In the Palazzo Pubblico is located also the city’s clock tower, build 1884 – 1894. It is one of the most visited attractions in San Marino.

The clock tower on Palazzo Pubblico.

Perched on the top of a 657m lump of rock, the 61-sq-km „Republica di San Marino“ is Europe’s third-smallest state after the Vatican and Monaco. A favorite day-trip destination. San Marino Castle is located below the wall of the first castle La Guaita.

San Marino, night view, a Must See destination.

As such a large part of San Marino’s national income is for the tourist industry is not too surprising to find that most of the shops are selling various things for tourists. You find many things- from wooden clocks to expensive watches, tourist tack to fashion clothes and of course the typical, worldwide known, San Marino items as stamps and coins. There are so many choices.

Very much sought after collectors items, the stamps of San Marino.

About 2.5 million visitors make the very steep climb to the historic center every year.   However, if you catch it at a quiet time (during the week, preferably in winter) the old town is pleasant enough and the views are spectacular.

Yes, even in winter its spectacular.

Not souvenirs only and not good food only in San Marino. If you are a history lover San Marino is a „Must See“ destination for you. Maybe it is one of the world’s smallest and oldest places but it has so unbelievable much to offer.

My San Marino souvenir pick was a bottle of „cactus liqueur“, made from the „prickly pear cactus“ or „Opuntia“. One of the best liqueur’s I ever had. Sadly it didn’t last long enough.

History.

The earliest evidence of a social structure in the area dates back approximately to the Neolithic Era (5000–4000 BC). Later traces of human activity come from the Bronze Age (about 2000 BC), such as for example the bronze axe found at the castle of Casole.

San Marino in the Neolithic Era and tools from the Bronze Age.

The country takes its name from Marinus, a stonemason. In 257 AD Marinus participated in the reconstruction of Rimini’s city walls after their destruction by Liburnian pirates. Marinus then went on to found an independent monastic community on Monte Titano in 301 AD. San Marino lays claim to be the oldest extant sovereign state as well as the oldest constitutional republic on earth.

The Saint Marinus working on the monastery.

Following the expansion of Rome and the foundation of the colony of Ariminum, San Marino became part of Aemilia, the eighth Roman province. Many traces remain of the presence on Mount Titano of the descendants of Romulus and Remus.

This is the most ancient document remaining which proves the existence of a free and well-organized “civitas” on Mount Titano. Indeed, the “Placito” testifies that around the year 885, a castle in coexistence with the monastery, owner of cultivated farmland with a dense agricultural population, existed on Mount Titano. Moreover, the document declared for the first time the independence of the territory of San Marino from the Church of Rimini, Montefeltro and Ravenna.
It is a poor copy, dating back to the 9th century, of a previous document (dated February 20, 885). The dimensions are 360 x 650 mm, and it has been damaged by numerous lacerations which have rendered illegible four lines and ruined the bottom-right edge of the text.
The oldest written costitution of any existing nation in the world.

The current legal system of San Marino began on October 8, 1600. The government gave binding force to a compilation of Statuti written by Camillo Bonelli, covering the institutions and practices of Sammarinese government and justice at that time. It was written in Latin and contained in six books. The new system was an update on the Statuti Comunali (town statute) which had served San Marino from about 1300. Existing institutions, such as the Council of the Sixty, were carried forward from this period. The Statutes form the basis of all laws in effect today, so it is the oldest written constitution of any existing nation.

Left: Palazzo Pubblico, the seat of the government of San Marino. Right: San Marino has a very small, but extremely proud Army. Change of the guard in front the Palazzo Publico every half an hour during daylight in tourist season.

The 1700s saw another political crisis for the independence of the tiny republic, when Cardinal Giulio Alberoni occupied it with his troops, forcing the authorities to pledge allegiance to the Papal State, to which the population reacted with acts of rebellion. The matter was resolved on 5 February 1740 with the intervention of the papal delegate Enrico Enriquez, and San Marino regained its independence. The date is still celebrated today with the Feast of St Agatha, the commemoration of Saint Agatha, patroness of the Republic, as well as liberation from foreign rule.

The Council Hall on top floor of Palazzo Pubblico. The effigy of the founding Saint dominates the hall. It depicts the Saint surrounded by his followers: peasants, soldiers, scholars, women and children, listening to him while he admonishes them stating “Relinquos vos liberos ab utroque nomine” (I leave you all free one from the other).

In 1849, while attempting to reach Venice, Garibaldi found himself surrounded by Austrian troops near Macerata Feltria. His only choice for salvation was to seek refuge in San Marino, and he went personally to the Palazzo Pubblico to present his request for shelter, which was granted.

Giuseppe Garibaldi (4 July 1807 –  2 June 1882) was an Italian general, politician and nationalist who played a large role in the history of Italy. Garibaldi has been called the Hero of the Two Worlds because of his military enterprises in Brazil, Uruguay and Europe. Worth to read about him !
The Gendarmerie of San Marino in 1898.

San Marino sent Abraham Lincoln a letter during his presidency, and he replied to them. The words of his letter are engraved on the bust in Latin and English:
Although your dominion is small your state is nevertheless one of the most honored in all history. Very nice answer, but look on the date – may 7, 1861. The Civil War had just begun a month ago. Could you imagine what was going through his head when he wrote that letter ?

Bust of Abraham Lincoln in San Marino.

During the Second World War San Marino remained neutral, becoming a safe refuge for the inhabitants of the surrounding area, and over 100,000 persons requested and obtained shelter. The refugees were accommodated in the country’s houses and churches, and even in the tunnels of the railway that had linked San Marino to Rimini.

San Marino railway before the war and tunnel shelter after the bombing.

This railway, opened on 12 June 1932, improved communication and trade between the two countries, but on 26 June 1944, American aircraft bombed the line between the stations of Domagnano and Valdragone, putting an end to its use – forever.

Cuisine.

The San Marino cuisine is simple and delicious, with flavors from neighboring regions mixed with local herbs and ingredients. Look for „Faggioli con le Cotiche (a bean and bacon soup) , Stufato di Coniglio (a rabbit stew) and Torta Tre Monti (a chocolate and hazelnut layer cake). Make your meal complete with delicious local wine and Tilus, a truffle infused after-dinner liquor.

Tilus, San Marino delicious truffle liquor.

San Marino’s culinary history is similar to that of Italy’s, but on a smaller scale. The only true influences on the local cuisine are from the native foods available and their contact with the Italians.

Piadina. A delicious San Marino wrap, stuffed with cheese, cured meats and salad greens. A popular dish in San Marino! The ingredients are green-white-red, colors of the Italian flag.

Due to its location, San Marino’s foods are primarily Mediterranean as far as what is available, including garlic, onions, and later lemons. Due to the Italians though, the food contains a lot of pasta and other ingredients synonymous with Italian cuisine such as the tomato and liberal use of olive oil.

Fusili with a Napoli style meat ragout.

San Marino’s food is most closely related to the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, but there are various local differences. So as „Piada“, a thin Italian flatbread served with most foods. Or „Nini di Rondine“, a pasta with ham, cheese, and beef in a tomato sauce, then topped with a white sauce and baked. And „Pasta e Cece“, a chickpea and noodle soup with garlic and rosemary.

And of course, one will get pizza’s, so as everywhere in Italy, also in San Marino. Here a „Pizza Capricciosa a la San Marino“.

And Much More.

Who hasn’t heard about the „Formula One Grand Prix of San Marino“ ? Carried out every year on the race course of Imola. It was one of Michael Schumacher’s „home race courses“ during his Ferrari time.

The FI of San Marino and Michael Schumacher on podium, one of his many victory’s.

Why having a day tour only ? There is so much to see and discover that one can easily stay a few days, having great accommodation in one of the luxury hotels of San Marino.

If you are lucky, like I was in front of Hotel Bellavista, you can have a glimpse of the Mille Miglia in San Marino where the route is going always through.

The Mille Miglia (Italian for Thousand Miles) was an open-road endurance race which took place in Italy twentyfour times from 1927 to 1957 (thirteen before the war, eleven from 1947). Like the older Targa Florio and later the Carrera Panamericana, the MM made Gran Turismo (Grand Touring) sports cars like Alfa Romeo, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes Benz and Porsche famous.

Have seen there some dream cars, two Mercedes Benz 300Sl Gullwing’s. And at the checkpoint, in front Palazzo Publico (sadly disappeared in the fog, but half an hour later it was clear again, its mountain climate) an extremely rare Mercedes Benz SSK (Super-Sport-Kurz) from 1928. For enthusiasts a 7liter, 225hp, 6 cylinder engine, reaching 192 km/h. Also notice the soldier on the far right.

The race brought out an estimated five million spectators From 1953 until 1957, the Mille Miglia was also a round of the World Sports Car Championship. Since 1977, the Mille Miglia has been reborn as a regularity race for classic and vintage cars. Participation is limited to cars, produced no later than 1957, which had attended (or were registered) to the original race.

Hotels.

Staying a few days in the city is often not easy, one has to book very early. I stayed a few times there, the Grand Hotel, it was a bit expensive, but worth while. Other hotels are easy to find via internet.

Breakfast for one on your hotel suite balcony in San Marino. What a view to begin an interesting day. Click on the pics, most will supersize for a better sight.

One alternative choice is to stay in Rimini and take day tour up to San Marino by bus, its quick (only 30 minutes) and easy. One time I had the Kadett Hotel in Rimini, very modern, offering everything one expects. Of course it can’t compare with „the old flair and charm“ of the Grand, but much much cheaper.

The Kadett hotel in Rimini. From top left to bottom right – Hotel outside at night, hotel lobby, typical Queen/bed room, breakfast bar at the restaurant, mouthwatering antipasti buffet and the souvenir offer at the lobby.

Restaurants.

All menus, meat, pasta, fish or pizza are available in several languages. You’ll find the menu translated into English, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Romanian, Dutch and German. Never have seen that kind of „tourist offer“ somewhere else.

Restaurant Miramonti, one of my favorites, because they offer almost everything in a relaxed but lush atmosphere.

In the heart of the old town, not far from the main places of artistic interest, the Restaurant Miramonti is synonymous with quality and courtesy.
Located in a very quiet location, its halls with 300 seats offer a beautiful view on the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

Entry to Miramonti – bar or restaurant.

The pastas are made entirely by hand: Strozzapreti Miramonti, Cappellacci Walnuts Gorgonzola, Gratin Ravioli, Gnocchi alla Gallipollina, Tagliolino Black and much more.
Among the main courses they propose: Fillet with Porcini Mushrooms and Asparagus baked in foil, Sliced Beef, Fiorentina, Fillet of Sea Bass in a Potato Crust (magnificent), Guazzetto di Crustaceans (Stewed Shellfish), Mix Fried with Vegetables.

Some of the Miramonte menues. Plato Tipici, Antipasti Carne e Formaggio, Miramonti Pasta and Plato Carne. Ooohhh – I can tell you – finger licking dishes. Comine this with some excellent local wines from Umbria or Toscana.

Places of greater cultural interest.

Museums.
The Museum of Torture
St Francis Museum
The State Museum

Everything in San Marino is reachable within a few hundred meters. But beware, its mostly going steeply up and down.

Churches.
The Church of St. Francis
The Monastery of St. Clare
Cava dei Balestrieri (The Archers Quarry)
Basilica del Santo (The Saints Church)

Basilica del Santo San Marino, just a few meters behind „Piazza della Liberta“.

Others.
Palazzo Publico
1st Tower “Guaita” With Inside the Museum of Modern Art
2nd Tower “Cesta” With Inside the Museum of Ancient Arms
3rd Tower “Montale”

Palazzo Publico, left and the old fortress on Mount Titano, really worth to visit.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic to spend a few days at this marvelous destination ?

World Beard Day 2017

World Beard Day.

World Beard Day is celebrated annually on an international level with people from every nation and continent gathering together with their beards. It is held on the first Saturday of September and is characterized by the happiness of all people being with their beards and with each other.

On World Beard Day, it is customary for the bearded members of a family to relax and partake in no jobs or chores. The beardless members of the family traditionally show their support by waiting on the bearded hand and foot. World Beard Day is all about promoting and elevating the global status of the the beard.

Hans Steininger, a German, photographed around 1890. He had for over 100 years the longest beard in the world, over 3 meters long.

Whilst many countries and cities practice World Beard Day customs specific to their own region, shaving on World Beard Day is universally considered to be highly disrespectful.

History of World Beard Day.

Every year people gather in places all over the world to sport their beard, with various ways of celebrating all over the world. The origins of World Beard Day have been lost to history, which isn’t surprising considering that there is evidence that the Danish Vikings have held a day in honor of their beard going back as far as 800 AD. Back in those August days, there wasn’t a specific day held to honor the beard, but multiple celebrations throughout the region. Some of the celebrations are even a little crazy.

What to do on World Beard Day.

If you are hosting a World Beard Day event, here’s a helpful list of things you can do to make this the greatest World Beard Day ever… – and of course much much more.
Break bread with your bearded brethren. This is a custom since middle ages.

Famous beard Henry I, around 1620.

What World Beard Day would be complete without a mouthwatering array of beard friendly foods? Popular options include
* Barbecue
* Vindaloo
* Fondue
* Having a fire
If laws permit, build a fire (or if you prefer have some beardless people build you a fire), then sit around the fire and enjoy having a beard and living in a golden age of beards.
World Beard Day Games and Events
World Beard Day events often feature various games and events. Feel free to create your own event, or choose from any of the  customary games you already know and use.

Yes – we took part in „The World Beard Festivals“ here in Uruguay, see at the end of this post. This time with some nice roasted legs of lamb, next time, hopefully all of us will be participating again, I make my favorite Vindaloo, promise.

World Beard Day Facts.

  • In southern Spain, many townships gather to witness a boxing match between a bearded man and a beardless boy. The bearded man, normally armed with a sharp pike, is typically the victor.
  • In the Swedish village of Dönskborg, anyone without a beard is banished from the town and forced to spend twenty-four hours in a nearby forest. Back in the town, the hirsute burn effigies of their clean-chinned loved ones.
  • The exact origins of World Beard Day are unknown, but there is some evidence to suggest that Danish Vikings had a special day dedicated to the glorification of beards as far back as 800 AD.
The Vikings.  Pictures will supersize if you click on!
  • The event was not held on a fixed date, and was often celebrated hundreds of times each year. This early incarnation of what would one day become World Beard Day typically involved the ransacking of neighboring towns, villages and countries by large groups of heavily-armed bearded men.
  • Throughout the world, bearded communities are encouraged to acknowledge this sacred day by organizing and staging their own public or private World Beard Day celebrations. These can consist of anything from a relaxing family lunch to a lavish, tax payer-funded street parade.
  • Shaving on World Beard Day is universally considered to be highly disrespectful.

WBMC.

Every two years, the WBMC (World Beard and Mustache Championships) showcases the very best in men’s and women’s whiskers and unites beards in a cultural event like no other in the world.

Projected to be the largest competition to date, the three-day event will include live entertainment, local food vendors, family-friendly activities and dozens of facial hair competitions.

  Famous beard Albert Einstein.

Beginnings.

Like many things having to do with the sport of international bearding, the history of the sport is shrouded in controversy. One Italian group claims that it held the first championships in Northern Italy in the early 1970′s, it seems more likely that modern competitive bearding an event began with a 1990 event organized and hosted by the First Höfener Beard Club (1. Höfener Bartclub) in its hometown Höfen/Enz, Germany, a small village in the Black Forest. In 1995, the same club hosted the second World Beard and Mustache Championships in the nearby city of Pforzheim.

  Famous beard Sean Connery.

European Dominance.

After 1995, local beard clubs in Northern Europe began organizing international competitions every two years. In 1997, the Norwegian Mustache Club (Den Norske Mustaschklubben), headquartered in Trondheim held the competition in its hometown of Trondheim. Two years later the Swedish Mustache Club (Svenska Mustaschklubben) organized the championships in Ystad, at the extreme southern end of Sweden. In 2001, the Swabian Beard and Mustache Club (Schwäbische Bart- und Schnauzerclub) celebrated its tenth anniversary by hosting the championships in its hometown of Schömberg.

What a beard again. During the „25th Garmisch – Partenkirchen Beard Championships“ in Germany. Notice, local championships already 25 years going on, many years before the WBMC was founded.

Carson City 2003.

Bearding came to America in 2003 with the World Beard and Mustache Championships held in Carson City, Nevada as part of the annual Nevada Day Celebration. Approximately 85 European beardsmen showed their stuff to a crowd of enthused and amazed Americans along with the worldwide press. Berlin’s Karl-Heinz Hille was crowned grand champion and representatives of German beard clubs won 36 of the 57 trophies awarded. Unlike their European counterparts who were organized into local beard clubs, American beardsmen were not affiliated with local clubs, but competed as Beard Team USA.

  During US championships.

Berlin 2005.

The First Berliner Beard Club (1. Berliner Bartclub) hosted the 2005 World Beard and Mustache Championships. Germany continued its domination, taking fourteen of the seventeen first-place awards. German Elmar Weisser took first place in the full beard freestyle division with a hirsute rendition of the host city’s historic Brandenburg Gate. Beard Team USA fielded a strong squad but was not match to the host team in the German capital.

Famous beard Mel Gibson.

Brighton 2007.

In 2007 London’s Handlebar Club, which ironically prohibits its members from having beards (mustaches only!) played host to the championships in the seaside town of Brighton. The championships drew a sellout crowd while hundreds of facial-hair fans stood outside begging for tickets. This time Weisser’s beard commemorated London’s Tower Bridge. Upstart Beard Team USA took five first-place trophies but Germany continued its domination with nine golds in all.

  Famous beard Ernest Hemingway.

Anchorage 2009.

The United States became the world’s new facial hair super power, capturing twelve world championship titles out of eighteen categories plus overall at the World Beard and Mustache Championships in Anchorage, Alaska on May 23, 2009. Possessing home field advantage, the USA was able to dethrone Germany which had dominated this competition since its inception.

Hometown favorite and Beard Team USA member David Traver was crowned overall champ, having styled his beard to resemble an Alaska snowshoe which earned him top honors in the freestyle full beard category. Meanwhile Germany’s Karl-Heinz Hille’s elaborate mustache earned him second. San Franciscan Jack Passion placed third with his long, red natural beard. The winners took home engraved gold pans.

Lot of work before one become a winner.

Trondheim 2011.

The competition returned to Norway on May 15, 2011. This time, Germany beat out the USA by a single gold medal. The contestants helped celebrate the Seventeenth of May, Norway’s national holiday with a festive parade through the streets of Trondheim.

One of my favorite German beards.

Leinfelden-Echterdingen 2013.

In 2013, Belle-Mustache hosted the world championships in its hometown, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, near Stuttgart, Germany. Beard Team USA fielded a strong squad including Patrick Fette who achieved a perfect score in the English Mustache category.

  What a beard.

Portland 2014.

The 2014 World Beard and Mustache Championships will take place in Portland, Oregon on October 25. The Portland event marks a break from the tradition of holding a world championship only biennially. The event will give Americans unable to travel to Europe an opportunity to compete on the world stage for the first time since 2009 and is the first time the event has been held in an even-numbered year. The event reflect the explosion of interest in bearding, where beard competitions are now held nearly every week and beard clubs are cropping up all across the country.

As you can see, people love to celebrate a „World Beard Day “ every year, that’s why now is World Beard Day every first Saturday each year !!! Official WBMC feast was in Leogang, Austria, but the Swedish made their own day in Stockholm.

Leogang 2015.

In 2015 the WBMC returns to Europe, when the Alpine village of Leogang, Austria plays host. The East Bavarian Beard Club will organize the event. Beard Team USA plans to attend after stopping over in Munich at Oktoberfest (the real thing for bearded ones ?).

One of the winners. As you will notice, they all have their own outfit going with the beard. See here and see Austin further down.

Austin 2017.

Remington & Beard Boss presents 2017 World Beard & Mustache Championships, September 1 – 3, at the Long Center in Austin, Texas.

And here the very first picture-result-winner from yesterdays (September 2nd 2017) „World Beard Day“ in Austin, Texas. Wolfgang Schneider from Germany (the one on the right) won the „Natural Mustache“ category with his classic styled Schnauzer. It was already his sixth victory in this category during the last 6 competitions.

My dear friend Bernd sent this dpa pic to me. He is right, also women are taking part at the competitions and of course they also deserve to be named.. I didn’t include this „woman part“ earlier, because every time there is a growing discussion about „real woman“ or ??? Anyway here we can see a group of participants from this years Austin festival. Thanks my friend.

Uruguay 2017.

A few friends came together yesterday to participate this year with the first Uruguayan „BBB Feast“. BBB is the shortcut for Beard – Barbecue – Beer. We met in the afternoon and had some fantastic legs of lamb from the Parilla (the Uruguayan grill), with different sauces from France, Germany and England accompanied with some wine and a few bottles home-brew. See the famous beards from Uruguay down here.

First „World Beard Day in Uruguay“. We had a lot of fun, good talks, lovely food, a day with amazing weather  and may be we can repeat it next time!

Curcuma-Chilli Chicken

Some of you asked, after the Guam article, for recipes. Here is one of my favorites, Kadon Pika. In the past I made this similar dish a few times, but under my known name „Curcuma-Chilli Chicken“. Curcuma is also named turmeric. This, Luigi, is what you had in your mind, right ? Above the skillet full of curcuma-chilli chicken with cracked baby potatoes and cilantro.  I found the old recipe and pics we used at the time.

Curcuma or tumeric, root and powder.

There are a thousand different ways to cook it. My favorite, which is popular around south east Asia contents coconut milk. Sauce stays thin and meat stays moist and juicy. You can try it with coconut cream and it will become thicker, like a curry.

Main ingredients for our curcuma chicken.

Ingredients.

1 whole chicken
1/2 cup dark soy sauce (Kikkoman)
1/2 cup white vinegar
1 medium yellow onion, diced
6  large cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon curcuma (tumeric) powder
3 tablespoons of olive oil
1 1/2 cans coconut milk (about 600ml)
10 plus fresh hot chilli’s, or as many as you can handle

   Cayenne chilli, fruit and powder.

How to do.

Cut up whole chicken into bite-sized pieces.
Rinse and drain chicken.

Dice onions and mince garlic and saute in the olive oil.

Add chicken and cook until well browned.
Add the rest of the ingredients, except the coconut milk, and cook.

Stir occasionally until chicken is cooked well – but still firm. Do not overcook the chicken. In this recipe you don’t want the chicken falling off the bone. Original behavior is to nibble and suck the meat off the chicken bones.

Once everything is in the pot, except the coconut milk, it should look like this. Turn the heat down to low and cook for about 20 to 30 min. This should be just enough to cook everything just right, keeping the chicken firm and not falling off the bone.

  Should look like this.

As cooked to the right consistency, add the coconut milk and cook for 2 more minutes.
Serve over freshly cooked hot Jasmine Rice.

Chilli’s are just for decoration, better use coriander. Remember Luigi, in Panama we used Patacones aside.

Tips.

If you are in Uruguay and use local chickens (elephant size), which are much heavier then in the north, make sure to add at least 50% to all other ingredients.

Coconut milk, (400ml) from the Phillipines, we buy in Uruguay.

Make sure you smash up the chilli’s before adding them into the pot. If you use chilli powder instead, it must be added before cooking. And – my dear friends in Uruguay – this recipe does not content any OREGANO, especially not dry leaves sprinkled as decoration!

If you like some color decoration on the dish, please don’t use „dry oregano“, use FRESH chopped spring onion, cilantro or parsley instead.

This is a „thick sauce“ variation. Made with lots of onions, coconut cream, double cream, curcuma, chilli and just chicken thighs. I made this for my 70th birthday. Some of you might remember. Served over rice and with a strong German beer.

This is a lovely „thin sauce“ variation. Chicken meat off the bone and served as a soup with baguette and a lovely dry white wine.

The curcuma plant (called curcuma aromatica, see head picture) grows a few different variations. One will have different colors of roots and powder. I hope you find the time to cook this dish for yourself – its just great !

Did You Know That – 3 ?

And here my friends the 3rd part of unusual or unknown facts I found about history of our world. Putting these informations together I was again surprised what I read.

Graffiti.

Graffiti’s are not a street type of our modern times. The walls of ancient Pompeii were, for example, full of doodles. The ancient walls show election propaganda, but there are also lots of personal sayings like „Successus loves Iris“ etc..

The oldest known graffiti at Pompeii also happens to be among the simplest: „Gaius was here“. Or, more precisely, “Gaius Pumidius Diphilus was here,” along with a time stamp, which historians have dated to October 3, 78 B.C.

Much of the graffiti at Pompeii seems surprisingly modern this way. Ancient inscriptions include declarations of love, “Health to you, Victoria, and wherever you are may you sneeze sweetly“. Or insults, “Sanius to Cornelius: Go hang yourself”.  And remembrances “Pyrrhus to his chum Chias: I’m sorry to hear you are dead, and so, goodbye”. Others read „Atemius got me pregnant“ or „Phileros is a eunuch“ or „Secundus defacted here“ etc. etc..

  Ancient wall paintings in Pompeii.

There are also billboard painted inscriptions that included political campaign messages, advertisements for Gladiatorial games, and other public notices, like the equivalent of a giant flyer for a lost horse. The commonplace nature of these inscriptions is part of what makes them so historically valuable.

Ancient statues.

A typical detail in Greek statues is no accident, male genitals were always represented very small, because this corresponded to the then beauty side of the upper layers. A big penis was associated with stupidity and barbarism. This was not always the case. It suggests the view of ancient Greek statues, the male images all have a small penis, at least from today’s point of view. But why is that so ?

  Greek statue of Hercules Farnese.

Big penis, little clever-smart.

The American art historian Ellen Oredsson has investigated this and her answers are  briefly as follows.
According to the expert, there are two equivalent statements: On the one hand, the marble-trimmed penises are limp, which makes them look smaller. On the other hand, it all points to the fact that small penises were once better viewed than large ones.

One of the most valuable ancient figures is the 1.81 meter tall sleepy satyr. „The Barberine Faun“ is said to be 220AD. Apart from missing pieces of head, leg, and hands, the sculpture shows its naked masculinity particularly freely. Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, later Pope of the Catholic Church, had the figure restored in the 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In 1810, the future king of Bavaria, Louis I, bought the figure and placed her in his treasure chamber.

Oredsson refers to the British historian Kenneth Dover, according to which large penises were then regarded as ugly. In addition, they were associated with wantonness and stupidity. As an example, she calls the Greek fertility god Priapus, which has always been portrayed on statues with a gigantic facade (see picture), and has therefore been thrown from the Olympian by the other gods, less well-stocked.

A Pompeian mural:  The Greek god Paris (recognizable on the Phrygian cap) represented as fertility god Priapus with his giant limb on a scale.
For Michelangelo’s David, left and a detail of his best part, right – there is another theory: According to him, David’s penis grew quite small because of fear during the fight against Goliath. Ha Ha !

A small „member“, on the other hand, according to the art historian, would have allowed men to keep a cool head and to think logically. A virtue, from that time, the ideal Greek was rational, intellectual, and respectable.

Gothic buildings.

Do you think of naked sandstone in Gothic buildings? The Middle Ages were much more colorful than many assume: churches, castles and houses made of natural stone were usually painted in a colorful manner. Click on pics to supersize and enjoy them !

As seen here in the original faithfully reconstructed Dreikönigshaus in Trier, Germany.
The magnificent Saint-Jean cathedral in Lyon, France is one of the oldest and most magnificent gothic buildings, build in the 6th century.

Bremen’s Gothic Town Hall.

At about 1400, when the municipality of Bremen politically was on top, a new town hall was planned and built.  Localization and shape were a demonstration of municipal power against the archbishop. Bremen Market Square, completely plastered since about a century before, was now dominated by the town hall rather than by the cathedral and the archbishop’s palace.

See on the map the layout of this big municipality building right between church and dom, showing the power against the clerus. Also interesting the famous „underground restaurant“ layout with one of the largest wine selections in the world

Both of its two halls, the upper hall and the lower hall, were a few inches longer and wider than the great hall of the episcopal palace. Alike there, the entrances were in the ends. There was (and is) no porch to the market square itself.

Gothic buildings are for sure not boring.

The town hall in Gothic style was decorated with 16 large sculptures (seen between the large front and side windows), showing emperors and prince-electors, demonstrating Bremen’s claim of being an imperial city, and four ancient philosophers (probably originally four prophets). Bremen’s town hall is regarded as the jewel in the crown of the historical market square.

Colorful Gothic period. Do you know this Gothic cathedral ?

Here is a wonderful book that both inspires and educates. A huge volume covering the Gothic movement in art from the 12th century to the Renaissance, it focuses largely on the development of Gothic architecture, resplendent in well-placed illustrations and photographs that evoke the grandeur of the period.

Highest Mountain on Earth.

Is it possible to climb onto the tallest mountain on Earth ? Yes it is, I have been up there once and its much easier then you think.
It is „Mount Lamlam“ (meaning „lightning“ in local Guam Chamorro language), located near the southwestern village of Agat, is the highest peak on the island of Guam, USA.

Mount Lamlam, 406 meter (1.332 ft) above sea level.

Hikers can reach the mountain trail head across from Cetti Bay Overlook and summit in about 30 minutes. Easy walk, only handicap is temperature and humidity.

Shrine on „Good Friday Trail“, leading up Mt. Lamlam.

Mt. Lamlam in Southern Guam (highest mountain on earth below sea level atop the Mariana Trench). Mt. Lamlam in Guam is 11.530 meter (37.828 ft) below sea level. Mauna Kea in Hawaii is 10.314 meter (33.838 ft) from below sea level. Mount Everest is 8.848 meter (29. 029 ft) from below sea level.

Highest mountain on earth, Mt. Lamlam on Guam.

Guam sits atop the Mariana Trench, situated between the Philippine Tectonic Plate, which subducts the Pacific Tectonic Plate (earth’s old crust). The Challenger Deep (deepest part of the Mariana Trench has been measured using sonar 3x, (by 3 different scientific expeditions), showing depth ranging between 10,902m-10,916m, making it the undisputed deepest part of the ocean on Earth.

Mt. Everest, a „shorty“ against Mt. Lamlam.

These facts gives Mt. Lamlam the distinction of being the highest mountain on Earth below sea level. If Mount Everest were dropped into the Mariana Trench at this point, its peak would still be over 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) underwater.  You didn’t know that, right ?

Guam

Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense
For Immediate Release
August 15, 2017
No Change in Threat Level
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in conjunction with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center (MRFC), our federal and military partners, continue to monitor the recent events surrounding North Korea and their threatening actions.
There is no change in threat level at this time; Guam continues normal operations.
“Residents and visitors are reminded to remain calm, even with the continued unconfirmed reports throughout the media,” stated George Charfauros, Guam Homeland Security Advisor. “Remember there is no change in threat level, we continue business as usual and know there are U.S. Department of Defense capabilities in place. We continue communication with our federal and military partners and have not received official statement warranting any concern for imminent threat to Guam or the Marianas.”
No Connection between Outages and Unscheduled EAS Test
Residents and visitors may have noticed at 12:25 a.m., an unscheduled test of the Emergency Alert Broadcast System (EAS) was triggered from KTWG/KSTO AM. The message read:
A BROADCAST STATION OR CABLE SYSTEM HAS ISSUED A CIVIL DANGER WARNING FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES/AREAS:
Guam, Guam;
AT 12:25 AM
ON AUG 15, 2017
EFFECTIVE UNTIL 12:40 AM.
MESSAGE FROM KTWGKSTO.
The unauthorized test was NOT connected to any emergency, threat or warning. GHS/OCD has worked with KSTO to ensure the human error will not occur again. There is no scheduled test of the EAS or All Hazards Alert Warning System sirens today.
Threat: Rocket distance from North Korea only 1.400mls.

Guam.

The above message went viral today throughout the whole news world. A midnight alarm on Guam frightened the whole island population. No wonder, 2 presumptuous persons fight an escalating word war against each-other since weeks. One is the overweening fat baby from North Korea, the counterpart is the arrogant pathetic personality from the USA.

It’s all about „be“ or „not to be“, on back of their nations people and the public. Both like to impress, both love to be heard, love to be the focal point and love to throw vulgarity around.  They are unpredictable triggers for the rest of the world.

Guam, the tiny South Pacific island that’s smaller than the city of Chicago, has been thrust into the spotlight as the dispute between the U.S. and North Korea continues to escalate. After President Donald Trump threatened to meet North Korea with “fire and fury” if it continues its nuclear weapons program, North Korea responded by threatening the island. It is the U.S. territory that is closest to Pyongyang and has been a military stronghold since the U.S. acquired it from Spain after the Spanish-American War in 1898.

Distance just about 3.500km or 1.400mls.

The conflict between North Korea and the USA has attracted much attention to a small Pacific island. But Guam is more then just an US military base.

That attention was the cause to start today with this post about Guam. Not about politics, but about the wonderful island in the Pacific, which I had the chance, some years ago, to visit for a few days. Lots of pics are my own, some are unknown source and some I like to credit to Takuya Asada via Huffington Post.

What and Where is Guam.

Guam is a main holiday destination , a tropical Pacific island and one of the biggest US military bases.

Guam is an island in Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean that is part of the United States. It is a territory and not one of the 50 U.S. States. The people that first lived there are called „Chamorros“. The capital of Guam is the city of Agana (Hagatna) on the north west coast. The largest city is Dededo, some kilometers inland. Guam has important United States Air Force and Naval bases, which use about 1/3rd of Guam’s land.

Overview of Guam. Capital city is Agana. The main big US military bases are „Andersen Air Base“ in the north east and „US Naval Base“ in Apra Harbor, the mid west of the island.

History.

Guam was one of the first islands in the Pacific Ocean to be visited by Europeans. In 1521, the first European to visit Guam was Ferdinand Magellan, on his voyage around the World. Spain took over Guam in 1668, and it was an important place for Spanish delivery boats every year going between Mexico and the Philippines, known as the Manila Galleon. During this time the people on Guam learned a great deal about the Spaniards.

The Magellan monument and its plaque.

In 1898, the United States had a war with Spain and took Guam under the Treaty of Paris, which also brought the giving of Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico from Spain. Guam continued to be important due to its strategic location, both for shipping and air travel in the Pacific.

Spanish canon from the 1890’s and the underground Yokoi cave for Japanese soldiers from 1940’s.

During World War II, Japan captured Guam in 1941, but the U.S. fought to get it back in 1944. This meant that the Chamorro people on Guam were on a different side of the war than the Chamorro people on the nearby Northern Mariana Islands. Even though the Northern Mariana Islands were also taken over by America, they still feel different from the Chamorro people on Guam.

The whole island is a bit of an educational open air museum for WWII. Left a torpedo which didn’t blow and landed and right a Japanese „pitigun“.

In 1950, the US Congress passed a law making the people of Guam American citizens. Guam is also considered a state and a territory but is not counted as the 51st state because it is such a small island, also called the pacific west clan.

Weather and Time.

Guam is “where America’s Day begins” — quite literally. With it’s own timezone, Chamorro Standard Time, Guam wakes up 14 or 15 hours ahead of the US Eastern Time, depending on Daylight Saving Time. The island celebrates New Year’s first in America and movies often premiere far ahead of the rest of America.

Sunset at Agana Beach with Alupai Island.

Guam is a tropical island. It is usually quite warm and wet and the temperature does not change very much. From February to July it is dry, but the rest of the year it is rainy. Sometimes Guam has very strong and dangerous storms in October and November.

Guam can be as above (sunset) or like this.

Its the most southerly and largest island of the Marianas Archipelago, 6.000 km west of Hawaii. Also included here (but not as part of Guam itself) are the three tiny US Territories of Johnston Island,  1.300 km from Hawaii, Midway Island 2.350 km and Wake Island 3.700 km. The total population of Guam is around 180.000.

Click on map to size up and see the US islands.

Guam is next to the Mariana Trench, which is the deepest part of the Earth and underwater. The Mount Lamlam is therefore the highest mountain on earth with  11.530 meter (37.828 ft) below sea level. See my post „Did You Know That – 3“ !  It sometimes has earthquakes, some of which have been very strong. Also hurricanes which find their path trough the pacific. Don’t hesitate to read my post „Nan Madol Part 1 and 2“ about !

Heavy tropical storms like this hit the island region.

Indigenous Culture.

Most of the inhabitants of Guam belong to the people of the Chamorro. They form the original inhabitants of the island – as descendants of former settlers. Statues, like those of a Chamorro chieftain, recall their ancestors. The indigenous people are of Indonesian-Spanish-Philippine origin. The island promotes the traditional culture of Chamorro.

Chamorro people are friendly, open and have big hearts and even bigger parties, meaning the village fiestas they celebrate. Pics here, of course, are set for tourists.

The original inhabitants of Guam are from Indonesia and the Philippines. The Chamorro flourished as an advanced fishing, horticultural, and hunting society. They were expert in the art of building and designing the world. The Chamorro was a strong matriarchal society, and it was through the power and prestige of the women, and the failure of the Spanish overlords to recognize this fact, that much of the Chamorro culture, including the language, music, dance, and traditions have survived to this day.

  A preserved Latte stone.

Latte Stones are the stone pillars of ancient Chamorro houses. Found on the Guam and the Marianas Islands. Original Latte Stones were composed of two pieces, a supporting column (halagi), made from coral limestone topped with a capstone (tasa), made from coral heads, which were usually taken from the quarry site or reef to the location of the house. Customarily, bones of the ancient Chamorro’s, their possessions, were buried beneath the stones. Latte Stones are respected and remain untouched.

Can this also be an ancient grave yard ?

Tax Free Shopping.

Holiday is more than just relaxing on the beach. Guam is a shopping paradise. There is no VAT, no tax at all. Visitors can also learn more about the history of the island at the Guam Museum. 130 places on Guam are noted in the „National Directory of Historic Sites“ of the US – quite a bit for an island just as large as the US capital Washington, D.C.

The Guam Aka district is an upscale area with shops, restaurants and more. Dozens of malls invite to shop.

Pure Idyll.

There is no trace of military bases here. Although a third of Guam is used by the US as a military force, the rest have a lot to offer: turquoise water, coral reefs and hiking trails in nature. It is no wonder that tourism is the most important source of income for the island.

Yeah, pure Guam idyll, sunset on Tamuning beach.

All year long, „bathtubs are on Guam“ – so the island says on the Internet. The temperatures are tropical, mostly between 26 and 30 degrees.  That’s why the growth market is tourism.
The beaches are not crowded, it is said on the island, although every year more than a million tourists visit Guam. Especially for divers the sea is popular because of its coral reefs. Tourism is gaining in importance. Since the 1980s Guam developed mainly through investments from South Korea and Japan.

That’s what tourists like on Guam, „Lovers Point“.

Through the airport, the island is well-connected to tourists from East Asia. In a few flying hours, Guam is reachable and is thus much closer than the popular Hawaii. Guam is particularly popular with Japanese people – three quarters of tourists come from there. The remaining holidaymakers travel mostly from South Korea, China or Taiwan.

Or that they like. „Pacific Island Club and Resort Water Park“, right on the beach, one of the best in Guam.

Guam has lots of hotels and other fun places for people to visit. Tumon Bay is Guam’s biggest beach. It has lots of pretty white sand, and the water has lots of fish. Tumon is becoming a busy city, full of markets, shops (all well known brands are available) and fun, fun, fun – especially at nights when its cooling down a bit.
Today, Guam has less visitors than it did a few years ago, because Asia has had some trouble, as we know. This means there are fewer jobs on Guam, and it has lost money.

And sightseeing of course, here the Talafofo Falls. These wonderful pics depend on dry or rainy season. The Talafofo river can change dramatically.

Law and Government.

Most people on Guam are happy to be Americans. The American military bases make some jobs for a lot of Guam people. Being part of America also helps bring visitors from Japan who spend money.

But some people on Guam do not like Guam continuing its status as a U.S. territory. They want to be a more important part of America. Some of these people want Guam to be a commonwealth, like Puerto Rico. A few others want Guam to be a U.S. State, or for Guam to be its own country. But the United States does not think this would be a good idea.

Guam needs a lot of money from the U.S. government, which it would lose if it changed into a commonwealth, a state, or its own country. Also, changing Guam might mean the U.S. would have to give up some of the important military bases.
Guam being a part of the United States is also important to the security of the United States with its position as a power projection hub in the event of a conflict with any Asian powers, such as China or North Korea.

Hotels.

All well known brands and chains are available on Guam. Of course they own the best beach locations which others can’t afford. But a bit inland one will find many many excellent private destinations to stay over night or for some holiday weeks.

  Tumon Bay hotels and beach.

For 5 stars one has to pay. I used the Hyatt during my stay. Central in Tumon, right on the beach, just a wonderful location. It surely was one of the best. See the pics.

Great destination on Guam, the Hyatt Regency. Direct on the Tumon Beach. It has amazing views, see from 15th floor onto pool area, or the great beachfront and more. The restaurants are good, but I didn’t use them often, because there are so many interesting restaurants in the township around. Early morning you got the whole pool for yourself.

Food.

As a food lover and hobby cook I have to write about this too. The food selection on the island is amazing. From every international fine cuisine to local street meals one will find everything for every taste and purse. I will concentrate this post information to 6 foods „you must eat on Guam“, well known local dishes.

Kelaguen
Chamorros are known for their kelaguen-making skills and this food is a local signature dish. Kelaguen is based around the cooking property of lemon juice and has similarities to ceviche. A combination of lemon juice, onions, local hot peppers, salt and sometimes grated coconut are used to Kelaguen either seafood, beef, chicken or others.
Chicken is the most popular meat chosen to Kelaguen and tastes the best when it is barbecued beforehand. Octopus or squid Kelaguen can be harder to find but are especially delicious and are definitely some of the best types of Kelaguen. The tanginess of the lemon juice combined with the spicy kick of the peppers infused into the meat of your preference creates sensational flavors in your mouth that will have you instantly craving for more.

Some shrimp Kelaguen I had at the Hyatt, very good, but sadly little portions. The typical local chicken Kelaguen with spring onions and lots of hot red chilli. My favorite dish on Guam, very tasty and refreshing.

Barbecue
The local barbecuing process begins usually about a day before the actual grilling. The reason for this is to allow time for the meat to marinate. The most common way to marinate meats for a barbecue involves a combination of soy sauce, vinegar, salt, black pepper, onions and garlic. While these are the main ingredients for a good marinade, most cooks have a secret ingredient or two that they like to add.
This marinade can be used for a vast array of different meats but the most commonly used in local barbecue are chicken and spare ribs. The best barbecue is grilled using the tangan-tangan wood found throughout Guam’s landscape which provides a unique smoky flavor. In the end, the meat is perfectly accentuated by the marinade and the smoky flavor is unforgettable.  Hot grill, hot chilli, cold beer, Guams BBQ is one of my favorites, particularly because it is not as boring as the South American Asados – SORRY, but true !

One of Guam’s most popular and literally a hands-on dining experience is Nana’s Crack’in Crab dinner menu. Here, the table is lined with butcher paper and you’re given a plastic bib. A pot of steamed King Crab or Dungeness Crab with Cajun spiced stewed tomatoes, corn, potatoes and sausage is poured out onto the table and everyone eats with their fingers. It’s totally a fun dining experience and you can have as much as you like. Plus hot nights and cold beer !

Red Rice
For centuries, rice has been a fixture in Guam’s food and culture. It is a staple and a necessary part of the meal at any party or gathering. Red rice has similarities to Spanish rice which makes sense, as the main ingredient, the Achote seed, most likely came from Mexico and was first introduced to the Chamorro people by the Spanish.
The Achote seeds are soaked in water and the rice is then cooked in the water giving it a deep red or bright orange color, depending on how long the seeds are soaked. Other ingredients such as onions and garlic are often used to infuse more flavor. Altogether it brings a wonderfully subtle earthiness to the rice and makes for a visually appealing side dish to your meal. Perfect side dish for everything or just as a solo meal.

Kadon Pika
The Chamorro word Kadon means stew and the word Pika means spicy. So altogether we get a spicy stew. Most often this stew is made with chicken as the main feature. The other ingredients include soy sauce, vinegar, salt and black pepper, onions, garlic, local chilli’s and last, but most certainly not least, coconut milk. The chicken is marinated in the combination of the above ingredients excluding the hot peppers and the coconut milk. Those are added after it has simmered for a good while. When ladled upon a nice bed of red rice, bite into the warm, tender chicken and the spicy peppers will clash against the sweet, creaminess of the coconut milk to bring you the perfect local comfort food.

Coconut Candy
As simple as coconut candy is, it is delicious. It is basically a combination of sugar and freshly grated coconut. The sugar is heated and melted down, the coconut is added and once it is cooked to the proper consistency it is then formed into balls or rectangles. A demonstration of how the ancient Chamorro’s made coconut candy can be seen at the Gef Pa’go Cultural Village in the southern village of Inarajan. It is a nice little confection to treat yourself to and it often comes in small pieces so you can enjoy it without feeling too guilty about the indulgence.

Coconut candy served 5star style or as a tourist souvenir. The 3rd pic is a coconut candy cake, called „spider crab“, who knows why ?  Anyway delicious treat and not too sweet.

The annual „Pleasure Island Guam BBQ Block Party“ returns every year since 2013. A terrific chance to get in touch with locals, local traditions and local food. With tantalizing BBQ cuisine, the aroma of this incredible culinary and cultural event will be sure to enhance Guam’s visitors experience while also appealing to the local community.

This is street party and street food par excellence. Hey Asado-Freaks, come here and learn !

Not to forget.

Coconut crab
The crab which can grow to over ONE METER length and can easily crack coconuts. That’s why she has the name, on other Pacific islands locals call it „robber crab“, because she steels their food source, the coconut.

Well, I had coconut crab on Christmas island, local delicassy. If you never tasted it, you should. The crab is not cheap and it is a lot of work to eat it, definitely 2x harder than any other crab to eat.

My opinion – not worth the price – better have a nice lobster.

Meat is dry but sweet and it tastes nice, because the crabs eat coconut and no „mud rubbish“ like other crabs. Don’t be disappointed there is not that much meat, like you have with other crabs. And – for cooking they use mostly the smaller/younger ones.

Even served among a whole seafood platter (for an horrible amount of $$) it wouldn’t attract me anymore. Lets just say I would try it if I’ve never had it before but would I eat it again? Prob not.  What I really liked was the „coconut crab curry“ (see right pic), but this is also not special, can be made with any other crab. Down here, dining at sunset.

I hope you can once enjoy Guam as I did !  And I sincerely hope that the „unpredictable lunatics around the world“ leave this island paradise as it is, peaceful, tranquil, worth to visit,  just a dream destination for East and West !
