In Uruguay the Christmas decoration seems very poor. Some large shops and malls decorate, but that’s it. Townships or cities have no money to decorate and most people in Uruguay are not interested anyhow.
Their interest on Christmas Eve is a get together with family and/or friends and they spend all money into a big asado and fireworks (see pics). The Christmas fireworks are often bigger then New Years Eve.

Easy Roast Chicken

roast chuck 21

This week we had again, as so often our chicken day. Because of the size, we directly put 2 chicken together in the oven or on the BBQ and then freeze the leftovers. In this post I like to introduce oven roast only, because everyone has its own BBQ method.
Additional, this week is a long Christmas weekend coming up and not everybody want or can afford a turkey or a big ham. Especially in Uruguay we have only heavy overpriced imported turkeys and Chicken is everywhere and cheap and common in Uruguay.

roast chuck 29 Whole chicken on BBQ, then use the spatchkock method.

Never underestimate the power of a roast chicken. It’s an infallible Sunday dinner, and the leftovers (if you’re so lucky) can be used for sandwiches, salads, and quick meals all week long. Roasting a chicken doesn’t have to be a special weekend affair, either. A small bird really only takes about an hour to cook, so we can easily make it on a weeknight. It’s that simple — and here’s how.

roast chuck 18   Isn’t it mouthwatering ?

You can use a roasting pan for chicken if you have one, but don’t feel like you need to go out and buy one. Most of the time, I just use my trusty cast iron skillet. You can also use a stainless steel skillet, a large casserole dish, or even a pie plate. Anything oven-safe that will comfortably hold the chicken will work.

roast chuck 25  No matter which roast pan – chuck is important !

You can also cook the chicken by itself right in the pan without a rack or anything else. Lifting the bird will improve the air circulation around it and help it cook a bit more evenly, but I think that this matters more for a giant Thanksgiving turkey than it does for a little weeknight roast chicken. But – sadly – little ones you won’t find in Uruguay.

roast chuck 28  2 in 1, here with a coriander honey glace.

This said, I do like to go for this 2-in-1 meal and roast the chicken on top of a bed of chopped potatoes, onions, carrots, turnips or like this. The veggies roast in the juices from the chicken and I get an easy side dish to serve with the chicken.

roast chuck 13  Roasted on a bed of root vegetables.

As far as actually roasting the chicken goes, it’s all pretty hands off. Rub it with a little oil and sprinkle it with salt and pepper, then pop it in the oven for an hour. Go about your business — finish the rest of your dinner or pour a drink. The chicken is done when it smells so good you can’t wait a moment longer. Here I like to show you roasting one chuck only, makes it easier to describe.

roast chuck 24   Insane „Mc“ advertising for South America – what a joke !

Ingredients.

1 (3- to 4-pound, 1 1/2 to 2 kg) chicken, or two together
Olive oil or softened butter
1 tablespoon salt
Pepper
Lemon, optional
Fresh herbs, optional
Garlic cloves, optional

How to do.

roast chuck 1  Wonderful fresh, free range Uruguay chicken.

Reach inside the cavity of the chicken and remove the bag of giblets (if you can’t find them, check in the neck cavity). The giblets can be discarded, saved for stock, or used to make gravy later on. Don’t be surprised about the size of Uruguayan chucks, they can be the size of „small elephants“, 3 and 1/2 kilo is average.

roast chuck 2  Take out the cavity.

For a very easy and quick roasting I put the chuck (Australian for chicken) in a big pot, poor over with hot water and let it simmer for about 30-40 minutes. With this method the meat will later fall of the bone and is still moist. The liquid you can use as a fine broth base almost for anything. We like to make a nice chicken soup with rice, leftover chicken meat and veggies (beans, peas etc.) from it.

thanksgiving 43 i Just lemons and thyme, don’t brine please.

Pat the chicken dry with paper towels or a kitchen rag. Make sure to absorb any liquid behind the wings or legs. Blot inside the body cavity too, getting the chicken as dry as you can, inside and out.

roast chuck 3  Pat the chuck dry.

Rub oil or softened butter all over the chicken, paying special attention to the breast and the drumsticks, be generous here! The oil will help the skin crisp and become golden.

roast chuck 5  Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Sprinkle the chicken all over with salt and pepper. Again, be generous here! Or – if you like mix one of your favorite „herb and spice rubs“ and rub in- and outside generous.

roast chuck 4  Rub generous oil on it.

If desired, stuff the inside of the chicken with halved lemons, whole cloves of garlic, or herbs, like rosemary, thyme or similar. This adds subtle flavor to the chicken. And the roasted garlic can be spread on bread!

roast chuck 6  Stuff with lemon and herbs.

Place the chicken, breast-side up, in the pan: You can roast the chicken by itself in a pan, or lift it off the pan using a roasting rack or roughly chopped vegetables.

roast chuck 7  Place the chicken in a rack and then in the oven.

Preheat the oven to 450F (230C). Place the rack in the lower-middle of the oven.  See further down my methods for normal heat or high heat roasting. Put the chicken in the oven and immediately lower the oven temperature to 400F (200C). Set a timer for 50 minutes and let the chicken roast undisturbed.

roast chuck 22  Just seasoned with oil, pepper and salt.

The chicken is done when it registers 165F (80C) in the thickest part of the thigh, when the wings and legs wiggle loosely, and when the juices run clear.

roast chuck 9   Always a safe way to control roasting, with a thermometer.

Continue roasting the chicken and checking it every 10 minutes until it is done. Total roasting time will be between 50 minutes and 1 1/2 hours — exact cooking time will depend on the size and type of your chicken. See cooking times further down.

roast chuck 12  We like chicken on a bed of veggies in red wine sauce.

Once finished cooking, transfer the chicken to a cutting board and let it rest for about 15 minutes. During this time, you can prepare a salad or side dish or whisk some flour into the pan juices to make gravy.

roast chuck 20 tamarind thyme red wine sauce This is one of the finest. Cut into portions before roasting and season with a tamarind and thyme rub, then roast with the high heat method. Finally deglase with red wine, then chopped onion and crushed garlic, highlighted with a bit of double cream. A normal chicken raised to a gourmet feast.

Carve the chicken into the breasts, thighs, and drumsticks, and serve. See the part „easy carving“ further down.  Leftovers will keep for about 5 days in the fridge or can be frozen for up to 3 months.

roast chuck 19 This is an easy step by step way to do it.

Easy 4 step carving.

If it is a duck, a chicken or a turkey, I use the 4 step method only and it works fine.

roast chuck 16  Separate always between the joints.
  1. Separate the legs and cut them between joints into drumstick and thigh.
  2. Remove the wings by turning them out of the joints and cut them in parts.
  3. Loosen the breasts and remove them from carcass, then slice into pieces.
  4. Pick any remaining meat off the bones and save it for other meals, or use it, finely chopped, in a delicious well seasoned gravy.
roast chuck 17  Cut along the bone and then just pull the breast off.

carve chuck 13a    This works well also, cutting it „on the bone“.

Tips.

Roasting Methods.
There are two methods for roasting a whole chicken:

Regular method:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Roast whole (thawed) chickens for 20 minutes per pound, plus an additional 15 minutes.

roast chuck 30  Always watch your temperature – Don’t burn the bird.

High heat method:
This method creates a crispy, darker skin. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) and cook whole (thawed) chicken for 10-15 minutes.
Then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and roast for 20 minutes per pound.
Do not add the extra 15 minutes to the cooking time as with the regular method.

The above times are for unstuffed birds. Add 15 minutes to the total cooking time if you’re roasting a stuffed chicken. And as with the chicken itself, make sure the stuffing reaches a temperature of at least 165 degrees F (75 degrees C).

roast chuck 27  See how „white“ the bird still is above the veggies.

If you roast on a bed of veggies, turn your bird once or twice, because down on the veggies the chicken will hardly turn brown and crispy. Grab a glass of good wine and ENJOY !!

Must See – AquaDom Berlin

aquadom 26    Another ‚MUST SEE“ destination.

Some years ago, during a Berlin visit, we stayed a few nights at the Radisson Blue hotel. A luxury experience right in the center of Berlin. And, except many other attractions of this vibrant city, one highlight is right in the courtyard of the hotel. This unusual attraction is  worth a post here in my blog.

aquadom 15a  The Radisson Blue Hotel next to the Berlin Cathedral.

The incredible AquaDom in Berlin, Germany, is a 25 m (82 ft) tall cylindrical acrylic glass aquarium with built-in transparent elevator.  The AquaDom complex also contains a hotel, offices, a restaurant, and the aquarium Sea Life Centre.

aquadom 15b  The Radisson Blu on the river Spree.

The gigantic AquaDom is located in the Radisson Blu hotel in Berlin and is the largest cylindrical aquarium tank in the world. It contains 1,500 fish of 97 different species and needs to be cleaned three to fours times a day by divers. The tank is part of the Sea Life Centre underneath the hotel that features a walk-through underwater tunnel.

aquadom 24Underneath the hotel, a „Sea Life Park“.

The outside cylinder was manufactured on-site from twelve sets of panels sent from the factory; the inside cylinder for the elevator was installed as one piece after three sections of 5 panels each were bonded together next to the hotel. The Aquadom is the largest (by volume) acrylic cylindrical aquarium in the world, with a diameter of about 11 m (36 ft), and it is built on a 9 m (30 ft) tall foundation. Filled with 1,000,000 l (260,000 US gal) of water, it contains over 1,500 fish of 97 species. The feeding of the fish and the cleaning of the fish tank is performed daily by 3-4 divers.

aquadom 20  The AquaDom, beautiful architectural rendering.

If you are a fan of aquariums, here is one which blows all others out of the water. Perhaps the most impressive part of the attraction is that guests can take a lift that runs through the center of the tank, giving them the perfect chance to witness all of the aquarium’s life .

aquadom 22b   Impressive hotel lobby.

Not only that, but visitors can watch daily feeds at 2pm and see 8kg being served to the AquaDom’s residents. The phenomenal tank was built by the Union Investment Real Estate GmbH and was completed in 2004. The project did not come cheap, and cost a whopping €12.8 million (£9 million). And it is not just the large aquarium which draws marine-lovers to the hotel.

aquadom 22a   The lobby from the sky bridge.

Under the AquaDom are many other water attractions including a walk-through underwater tunnel and an interactive rock pool.

aquadom 22 lobbybar  Amazing lobby bar, have a drink here.

It is operated by the Berlin Society for large aquariums (BGG), the first time awarded the Blue Starfish Award for special merits in the protection of marine fauna in the year of 2009. The most modern standards of sustainability are applied also for the AquaDom where BBG is currently rearing corals in breeding ponds. For a test run the first corals were hanged in a custom built acrylic glass bell with water flow in the aquarium.

The Panama Hat – Part 2

panama hat 7e

Making the Panama Hat.

To understand how a Panama Hat zigzags from an outpost just south of the equator to the gleaming window of a New York haberdashery is to understand how the world works. The trail begins in Cadeate, a coastal village in Ecuador’s Guayas province. For five days in every lunar cycle, they harvest toquilla (Carludovica palmata), the ten-foot-tall, palmlike wild plant from which the Panama hat is woven.

panama hat 4   Family business „hat making“ in Ecuador.

The straw cutters schedule their monthly harvest for the five days after the moon reaches its waning quarter, when, Vicuna explains, the straw holds less moisture and thus is lighter, easier to cut, and more pliable to weave. Wielding machetes, they harvest the slender new four-foot-high stalks, each containing the tightly wrapped fingers of one growing frond.

panama hat 7f    Hat weaving blocks, see above how they lean over.

The village council imposes a daily quota of 1,200 stalks per family; the harvest is brought back by mule and truck. The outer sheath of each stalk is stripped away, and the inner fingers are split and separated, leaving dozens of yard-long, ribbon like strands attached to the leaf stem. The prepared stalk is tossed into a vat of boiling water for about an hour and then hung on a clothesline to dry.

panama hat 7k  Not all are hanged on closelines to dry.

The straw gets trucked east to Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest and most industrialized city, and then to Cuenca, a town in the Andes that is at the center of hat production. And then the zigzag goes on as described earlier.

panama hat 7i  Almost ready, one of the last steps.

How hats are made, step by step.

panama hat 58        panama hat 58a
1. Cutting the cogollos out of the plant. He will need at least 48 cogollos to weave a hat. Often more.

panama hat 58b           panama hat 58c
2.He finds a spot about half way up, pokes and pierces, then extends his arm to slice along the edge to the end.
panama hat 58bb           panama hat 58cc
3. Cooking the straw, like extra long spaghetti and then drying, on hot days in the shade.
panama hat 58d    panama hat 58dd
4. Straw goes in a box and the hot coals in the clay pot (which will be stored under the box) will burn the sulfur. The sulfur smoke will fill the closed box and bleach the straw.
panama hat 58e  panama hat 58ee
5.He overlaps the individual straws, weaving them over and under each other faster than one can follow. After a couple of minutes he has created a tiny beginning. This stage is called the armado.
panama hat 58f                 panama hat 58ff
6.Above left, the classic weaver posture. Bent at the waist, chest resting on a cushion, sometimes just a folded t-shirt.
panama hat 58g   panama hat 58gg
7.You know in bullfighting that the matador is the one who kills the bull. In fine hat weaving, the re-matador is the one who re-kills the hat, finishes it again.
panama hat 58h           panama hat 58hh
8.The azocadora receives the hat after the rematadora loosely weaves the back weave. Then the azocadora carefully pulls the back weave tight.
panama hat 58i           panama hat 58ii
9. First, the cortador quickly cuts the edge straw down to an inch-long fringe. Then s/he turns the hat inside out and begins to cut off the loose ends.
panama hat 58j    panama hat 58jj
10.The hats are taken out back in the yard behind the workshop. The artisan fills a wash basin with water. They get a brush wash, another bleach and then hanged up to dry.
panama hat 58k         panama hat 58kk
11.The apaleador uses mallets made of dense tropical hardwood to pound the hats. The mallets are heavy. He pounds hard. Yes, that is a stone beneath the hats. This is the way to soften them.
panama hat 58l      panama hat 58ll
12. The cortador shaves the hats smooth. See how he is holding something between the first two fingers and thumb of his right hand? That is a double-edged razor blade that has been broken in half lengthwise.
panama hat 58m       panama hat 58mm
13.The wood forms are made of a completely different type of wood than are the apaleador mallets. the light wood forms are less likely to damage the hat upon impact than a heavy wood form.
panama hat 58mmm   panama hat 58mmmm
14.Ironing the hats, strokes were long and rapid. He pressed hard. Ironing a hat is not like ironing permanent press pants. While ironing a hat, the planchador is usually pushing as hard as he can.
panama hat 58n           panama hat 58o
15.Blocking is the hand process by which a hat is given its shape. Just as a fine diamond can be enhanced or spoiled by the diamond cutter, a beautiful Montecristi hat body can be enhanced or spoiled by how it is shaped and finished.
panama hat 58oo        panama hat 58ooo
16.The flange must be exactly the right size, so the hat will fit into it perfectly, no gaps, no squeezing. The flange must also be the right shape, the right width. This holds 65 pounds of sand in the big red head. You can see the cotton outside cover on the bottom. There is also an asbestos cover below the cotton cover. A heating element heats the sand so that it is hot to the touch. Thats the way how it will be pressed into the final shape.
panama hat 58p     panama hat 58pp
17.The Classic Fedora above has a leather sweatband in it that fits exactly right. to make sure they are exactly the right size before the sweatband and ribbon are hand sewn to the hat.

These are the basics of hat making. The final touches are mostly re-sizing, re-shaping the brim, deciding for a sweatband and a ribbon and on and on. One can spend a lifetime the decide for the „final personal Panama Hat“.  Brent Black is on of those guys, see down.

Jipijapa.

Definitely this is not a tourist town but it is an important trade center for products such as cocoa, cotton, kapok and coffee around the region. Accommodation in town is very basic.

panama hat 7a   panama hat 7b jipijapa manabi-ecu
Only tourist attraction in Jipijapa, except the church, is the „Panama Hat Tourist Information“, city center.

The Panama hat plant or toquilla palm or jipijapa palm (Carludovica palmata) is a palm-like monocot plant. It is not a true palm. Its leaves are different from the leaves of true palms, and unlike true palms it does not develop a woody trunk. Its female flowers (which mature first) have large stigmas, and its male flowers (which mature later) have a lot of pollen. They reproduce vegetatively, because they do not produce viable seeds.

panama hat 79      panama hat 47 jipijapa palm  Jipijapa Palm.

This palm was called in Ecuador Jipijapa Palm, because it grows around the Jipijapa area and was used to make the Panama hat, first also called Jipijapa Hats or Toquilla Hats.

Montecristi.

Montecristi is an old colonial town located 30 kilometers west of Portoviejo, founded in 1628 and the birthplace of the ex-President Eloy Alfaro.

The town is very famous for its straw and basketware and especially renowned for its high quality Panama hat production. There are many stores along the main road selling wooden barrels, wickerwork and many others (very cheap).

panama hat 83 iglesia de montecristi  La Iglesia Virgin de Monserrate de Montecristi.

Today, the legendary genuine Panama hat continues to be made of toquilla palm, and the very finest Panama hats are hand-crafted by artisans in the small town of Montecristi, Ecuador. Each hat is unique and can take from one to six months for a true master weaver to complete, adding to the Panama hat’s mystique and universal appeal.

panama hat 86 montecristi  Main street in the township of Montecristi.

With its long history, the traditional art of hand-weaving toquilla hats has been passed down for generations and continues to receive world attention. UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently recognized the Ecuadorian art of weaving a genuine Panama hat as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, a term used to define practices, traditions, knowledge and skills communities pass down from generation to generation as part of their cultural heritage.

panama hat 78 montecristi     panama hat 80 montecristi
Not only hats in the markets of Montecristi.    Straw weaving for everything, like bags, furniture etc.

Montecristi hats are the finest and most expensive Panama hats you will find. They are woven in different quality grades. Montecristi Panama hat “grades” are often expressed as Fino, Fino Fino, Super Fino. Some sellers make up their own “grades,” such as Ultrafino, or Museum Quality. Since the sellers all use the terms to mean whatever they want, these hat “grades” are useless to a consumer, as a way to compare hats from different sellers.

A Panama Hat „out of the box“. Keeps its shape without a problem and if not, a bit hot water and a dryer.

Also you have to realize how many weaves per square inch you find in a hat. they vary up to 3000 and much more for expensive „one of a kind“ ones. See an Montecristi advertising down here.

Extra Fino $1000—$2975
Super Fino $3000 and up                       Typical Panama Hat advertising, look at the prices !!

The most expensive Montecristi.

The finest Panama hat in history, woven in a tiny Ecuadorean village, may be too valuable for anyone to wear. Estimated sales price of US$ 100.000,–(one hundred thousand).

panama hat 9 100.000,-  Is a hat US$ 100.000,– worth ??

There’s a great artisan who resides in the village of Pile, in the hills outside Montecristi, a small town on a wide coastal plain along Ecuador’s western limit. His name is Simon Espinal, and his trade is making Panama hats. The best weaver alive, Simón Espinal, can weave hats with more than 50 rows per inch. He weaves only four hats each year.
Espinol’s latest creation is a masterwork perhaps unmatched in the history of Panama hat-making, as NPR ( National Public Radio, USA ) reports in a piece very much worth reading:

panama hat 55   Light like a feather.

„The weaving of a high-quality Panama hat is an intricate, laborious process. The iconic brimmed straw hats are created from fine strips of toquilla straw, harvested from palm trees that grow along the Ecuadorian coast. A single hat can take up to six months to complete, and the best ones are formed from around 3,000 weaves per square inch, an impressive figure already.

panama hat 10 simon espinal  Simon Espinal – pics from Brent Black.

Espinal painstakingly performed an unheard-of 4,000 weaves per square inch on his recent creation, spending eight months, from June to February, and logging nearly one thousand (1.000) hours of work. The strain on his eyes and mind was so great, he says, that he’ll never attempt another such hat again.
The result appears to be the finest Panama hat ever made. “My hope is that it will go to a museum,” Brent Black, a Panama hat dealer who sells Espinal’s work, told NPR. “This is not a hat that should be on anybody’s head. This is the very pinnacle of an old and very beautiful art.”

 panama hat 52   Over 4000 weaves per square inch (1inch = 2,54cm).

It’s difficult to judge what such a hat might fetch at sale. Panama hats are desirable for their light weight, smooth cream color, and beautiful weaving, and knowledgeable buyers pay handsomely for them. A previous hat by Espinal composed of 3,000 weaves per square inch sold for US$25.000,– and Black sells hats priced even higher. If this hat sells, its price could be as unprecedented as the hat itself“.

panama hat 70  Wearing a hat like this requires a certain class or style.

Black, for sure an expert on Panama hats, says further: „How can I describe a color you’ve never seen ? I can tell you one hat weighs less than an ounce, is thinner than some paper, but that does not tell you what it is to hold one, or to wear one. The finest are finer than you can imagine.“

panama hat 52a   How fine are the finest ? And how affordable ?

A hat with 25 rows of weave per inch is an impressive hat. A hat with 30 rows of weave per inch… well, that is a treasure, and yet, there are even finer ones. Hats with more than 40 rows of weave per inch. Hats with more than 50 rows of weave per inch. Even a hat with more than 60 rows of weave per inch. The only way to describe these hats is to say that they are impossible. Its simply not possible that human hands could weave straw that fine.

Panama Hats as such are a sign of elegance and a certain lifestyle, here in the winery of Walt in Sonoma.

The popularity of the Panama Hat.

For years, Panama hats have been worn by trendsetters worldwide such as notable world leaders Winston Churchill and Nikita Khrushchev, European royalty, international celebrities, and U.S. Presidents such as Harry Truman and Theodore Roosevelt – who appeared in a New York Times photo wearing a Panama hat on a visit to the Panama Canal construction site in 1906. Panama hats are as much a legend as the extraordinary men and women who have donned them to make them popular.

The golden age of Hollywood introduced the Panama to new generations, with many film stars wearing the hats both on and off screen. The Panama Hat has co-starred along side: Clarke Gable in Gone with the Wind, Sydney Greenstreet in Casablanca, Edward G Robinson in Key Largo, Klaus Kinski in Fitzcarraldo, Robert Redford in The great gatsby, Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird, Sean Connery in The Man Who Would Be King and Anthony Hopkins in Hannibal.

Many writers are also associated with the hat: Mark Twain, Graham Green, Malcom Lowry, Truman Capote and Tom Wolfe have all praised and worn the hats, their association bringing with it added elegance and style. Even Al Capone was seen wearing Panama hats, see pics down here.

From the gardens of Chelsea Flower Show to the catwalks of Paris, the Panama Hat is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. The Panama hat has been a quintessential symbol of British summer fashion ever since 1906 when Edward VII rejected formal morning dress in favour a linen suit topped off with a fine panama hat to attend Glorious Goodwood.  Also its very „in“ to wear Panama’s as a „matching couple.

Collecting – Advent Calendars

advent calendar 9

Diving into our childhood, most of us will remember the Christmas, or better said, Advent Calendars. We all couldn’t wait till we are aloud to open the next door.
The first of December, you can start to open the first door on your Advent Calendar. Usually you open the last one, door 24, on Christmas Eve, some calendars have a door 25, which you then open on Christmas day.

advent calendar 6  Modern „homemade“ Advent Calender.

History of the Advents Calendar.

Much information is to be found on the internet, and several books have been published on this subject, I like to give here only a short history of the Advent calendar.
The Advent (from the Latin word Adventus meaning “coming”) is the period before Christmas, observed in many Western Christian churches.

advent calendar 17 st. petri luebeck 2011  Advent Calender display in St. Petri’s church Luebeck, Germany.

In this period Christians prepare for Christmas and the birth of Jesus. The liturgical year always begins on the Sunday that falls between November 27 and December 3, and ends on December 24. The advent period comprises approximately four weeks and always has 4 Sundays, while the total number of weekdays range from 22 to 27.

advent calendar 16 huenfeld rathaus  The Rathaus in Huenfeld, Germany as a calendar.

The tradition of advent calendars can be traced back to the 19th century. One of the early practices was to put a chalk mark on a door for each day in December till Christmas Eve. The first known Advent Calendar which was made by handwork is from the year 1851. Another was to light a candle every day, either on an Advent wreath or a chandelier.

advent calendar 10 julkalender sweden  A „julekalender“, Advent Calender from Sweden.

It seems that the first advent wreath has been invented by the Lutheran theologist, Johann Hinrich Wichern, 1808-1881, (see my post about the Advent Wreath, November 2014) . In 1839 he used a wooden wheel with four large and nineteen small candles. During Advent, for each Sunday a large candle was lit, and for every other day a small one. Children could see how many more days till Christmas.

advent calendar 14 Hattingen Altes Rathaus  The Rathaus in Hattingen, Germany. 17 doors are open.

Another relates the “Advent tree”, originating around the mid-19th century; at the start of the Advent period a conifer would be placed in the home and every day a prophecy of the Old Testament would be recited before putting a candle, together with a paper star on which the recited text was written. Around 1880 printed prophecies became available.

advent calendar 11 fancy wooden christmas tree  Fancy wooden Christmas tree.

Other early styles were the Adventclock or the Adventcandle – a candle for each of the 24 days until Christmas, like todays Advent wreath. So in religious families little pictures were hung up on the wall – one for each day in December. An other tradition was to paint chalk strokes on the door, one per day until Christmas Eve.

The very first Advent Calendar.

In 1902 a Christian Bookshop in Hamburg published such a Advent-Christmas Clock. The Austrian Landesmuseum Niederoestereich (country museum Lower Austria) mentions the year 1903 as the year of the first printed Advent Calendar. In 1904 an Advent Calendar was inserted in the newspaper „Neues Tagblatt Stuttgart“ as a gift for their readers.

advent calendar 15 1903 1915    One of the „oldest“. Christmas Calendar from 1903.

In contrast to the above, Dr. Esther Gajek (University Regensburg, Germany) says that the first printed specimen was made in 1908 by a Swabian parishioner son, Gerhard Lang (born 1881 in Maulbronn, Germany – died in 1974).

advent calendar 1  Gerhard Lang, known as the inventor of the modern Advent Calendar.

When he was a child his mother made him an Advent Calendar with 24 „Wibbele“ (little candies) which were stuck on a cardboard. Later Lang was a participator of the printing office Reichhold & Lang. He produced little colored pictures which could be affixed on a cardboard at every day in December. This was the first printed Advent Calendar, although without windows to open, published in 1908.

advent calendar 3   A former creation of a glitter template. Handwork throughout !

This Calendar in 1908 was named „Christmas-Calendar“ or „Munich Christmas-Calendar“. At the beginning of the 20th century Lang produced the first Advent Calendars with little doors to open. At this time as well the Sankt Johannis Printing Company started producing religious Advent Calendars, Bible Verses instead of pictures behind the doors.

advent calendar 32  Panoramic advent calendar “Kleine Stadt im Mondschein” (Small Town in Moonlight). This version was published by Sellmer verlag in 1954.

The Advent Calendar`s popularity started to spread round the globe. But Lang had to close his company in the thirties. Until that time he had produced about 30 different designs.
The World War II terminated the success of this German tradition. The cardboard was rationed and it was forbidden to produce Calendars with pictures. The first printed specimen after the war were printed by Richard Sellmer in 1946. This was the Advent Calendar „The Little Town“, it was the first Advent Calendar available in the United States.

The Eisenhower Family promoted this Advent Calendar (See newspaper article below. The article is from Newsweek Magazine).

advent calendar 4  The Newsweek article about „the Eisenhower Advent Calendar“.

The first Advent calendars were based on 24 days with Christmas Eve as the last night to either put up a picture or take a candy. Today, the traditional German calendars still show 24 days, but in the United States, it’s not uncommon to also find ones with 25 days — the last opening to occur on Christmas Day. Advent Calendars filled with Chocolate were already available in 1958.

advent calendar 4a  Three Eisenhower generations. Grand kids with their „German Calender“.

Advent Calendars can be found everywhere Christmas is celebrated and have been made with many different themes. There are permanent ones with little drawers that are opened every day, felt pieces to decorate a tree, religious icons behind the different doors and lots of pop-culture/character Advent calendars. The traditional ones are still a cardboard or paper/plastic piece with a small treasure behind the doors.

advent calendar 18  Lavish homemade Advent-Gift Calendar.

The treasures can range from a beautiful miniature religious picture, perhaps a little wooden toy or even a piece of candy. Sure to cause problems when there is more than one child in the household. Or one is able to have a calendar each for every child. That is today’s fashion, because of the little gifts behind the doors. Former calendars were „family calendars“, surprises for everyone.

We could go on and on with wonderful pics of an unusual collectors theme, but it would go beyond the scope here. And modern types, as shown above are not in my interest. The older ones had some kind of craftsmanship, a sense of the Holy Time during Advent and Christmas and often designs from famous artists. Today – cheap computer prints. It’s so good, that collectors try to preserve fashion, lifestyle and history. Many more posts are coming, stay tuned and enjoy !!
