Sad End of a Whale

It all happened a few years ago and I always wanted to show the pictures of this massive carcass removal. I was waiting to hear if the officials had digged out the skeleton, but I couldn’t get any further information. Some pics are from AP, some I don’t know.

The sperm whale is the largest of the toothed whales. Whales washing ashore takes place all over the world. Last year we had a similar incident at the beach here in La Floresta.

Sperm whales are the loudest animal on the planet. At 200plus decibels their clicks can „vibrate you to death“. Whales use those clicks like a sonar (echolocation).

It is arguably an ignoble end for such a majestic creature – but a dead sperm whale that washed ashore on a beach in Uruguay has been hauled away by a truck and dumped in a landfill. The 16,5 meter whale washed ashore in Carrasco, a beach in the capital of Montevideo. Just near of the restored Sofitel Hotel and Casino.

While other countries prefer to use explosives to remove such large carcasses, dozens of navy officials and rescuers used excavators to drag the marine mammal weighing up to twenty six tons to shore.

A crane lifted the whale’s remains onto a truck. Hundreds of curious onlookers gathered to look at the animal despite an overpowering smell hanging over the beach in the residential Montevideo neighborhood. Normally at home in deep waters, after it beached due to unknown reasons.
Officials say the whale showed no signs of injuries and likely lost its bearings.

Dozens of Navy officials and rescuers used excavators to remove the marine mammal for burial in the landfill. Traffic tied up in the area as curious locals stopped to watch and catch a glimpse of the unusual sight.

The removal and burial of the body of the whale ran aground on Carrasco Beach were estimated at a cost of over US $ 20,000. Not included the petrol, working and overtime wages. The plan is in two years to dug up the remains and try to reconstruct the skeleton.  Haven’t heard that this was done already.

The operation, which began on Saturday and ended Sunday, with more than 50 municipal officers and naval personnel, National Naval Prefecture, Prefecture Trouville, army and police to Montevideo  was a massive organization and commitment.

  Final rest-place in a dump-hole.

About the Sperm Whale.

Sperm whales are easily recognized by their massive heads and prominent rounded foreheads. Following information is partly used from National Geographic.
Sperm whales‘ heads are filled with a mysterious substance called spermaceti.
Scientists have yet to understand its function, but believe it may help the animal regulate its buoyancy.

  Oil from the spermaceti organ.

Spermaceti and Diving Capabilities.

They have the largest brain of any creature known to have lived on Earth. Their heads also hold large quantities of a substance called spermaceti. Whalers once believed that the oily fluid was sperm, but scientists still do not understand the function of spermaceti. One common theory is that the fluid – which hardens to wax when cold – helps the whale alter its buoyancy so it can dive deep and rise again. Sperm whales are known to dive as deep as  1.500 meters (almost 5000 feet) in search of squid to eat. These giant mammals must hold their breath for up to 90 minutes on such dives.

The Giant Squid is and was always good for a story. Whale fighting giant squid in the deep sea.

These toothed whales eat thousands of pounds of fish and squid—about one ton per day. The pressure at that depth increases about one atmosphere for every 10 meters of water depth. At a depth of  1.500 meters the pressure will be approximately 150 atmospheres or 100 times greater than the pressure at sea level. That’s a lot !

Very social animal. They like to travel in groups, but diving for food they each go their own way.

Whale Pods and Behavior.

Sperm whales are often spotted in groups (called pods) of some 15 to 20 animals. Pods include females and their young, while males may roam solo or move from group to group. Females and calves remain in tropical or subtropical waters all year long, and apparently practice communal childcare. Males migrate to higher latitudes, alone or in groups, and head back towards the equator to breed. Driven by their tale fluke, approximately 16 feet from tip to tip, they can cruise the oceans at around 37 kilometers (23 miles) per hour.

Some sperm whale facts. Click on pictures !

These popular leviathans are vocal and emit a series of “clangs” that may be used for communication or for echolocation. Animals that use echolocation emit sounds that travel underwater until they encounter objects, then bounce back to their senders – revealing the location, size, and shape of their target. A perfect working natural sonar system.

  The biggest business for centuries.

Whaling Target.

Sperm whales were mainstays of whaling’s 18th and 19th century heyday. A mythical albino sperm whale was immortalized in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, though Ahab’s nemesis was apparently based on a real animal whalers called Mocha Dick.

     Moby Dick, the White Whale.

The animals were targeted for oil and ambergris, a substance that forms around squid beaks in a whale’s stomach. Ambergris was and remains a very valuable substance once used in perfumes.

Despite large population drops due to whaling, sperm whales are still fairly numerous.
But for how long – because whaling is still on the agenda !

Trump Again

The most hypocritical and dangerous President the US has ever had, must be overthrown. It is America’s biggest problem and therefore a problem for America’s allies and the whole free world.

Meantime I have read the new Bob Woodward book „FEAR“ about the acting United States President Donald Trump. WOW, whatever someone would say about this book and the contents – pro or con – it is a fatal exposure to the stupidity and primitiveness of an active president. If only half of it is true its already a danger for the free world.

Bob Woodward and his amazing view into the White House and behind Trump’s chicanery.

This article was composed from various press reviews – by example CNN, ABC, FOCUS, SPIEGEL, YAHOO, STERN, FOX, THE WELT, EL PAIS, HUFF POST etc. – just to give you a short actual overview.
Combining all I learned, I lost any little bit of human respect to a  ???  like Trump.

Trump like Mussolini: Nobel Prize economist believes Trump destroys democracy.  „Trump will become completely authoritarian.“

   Paul Krugman

Paul Krugman is Nobel laureate, one of the world’s best-known economists and a staunch critic of Donald Trump. Krugman believes that the US president will destroy democracy in the US – and very soon. »

The Destroyer in the White House.

Paul Krugman is Nobel laureate, one of the world’s best-known economists – and a staunch critic of Donald Trump.
The economist fears that the US president will soon become the perfect autocrat and destroy US democracy.

    I agree !! And that’s why I share it !!

Donald Trump and Democratic Governance are two concepts that are difficult to reconcile. Certainly: The US president was democratically elected, he is democratically legitimized – and so far governed democratically.

Yeah, RIGHT, then get some !

But Trump does this reluctantly. Again and again he attacks the independence of the judiciary in the US, complains about the legislative process in the parliaments and generally desires fewer rules and laws that limit his actions as the most powerful man in the state.

    The riding buddies.

Donald Trump, who shows not least his behavior in the Russia affair and his constant praise for dictators, has autocratic traits. He has no great respect for the institutions of democracy in the United States.

Trump’s lousy knowledge of geography.

Donald Trump believes his proposed border fence to repel migrants from Mexico is also a model for Europe. The US president is said to have recommended Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell: „Just build a wall in the Sahara“.

Beautiful Trump wall in the Sahara.

Borrell is reported to have told Trump that there is no simple answer to the question of how Europe deals with refugees, and that Europe can not even build a wall on foreign soil. Trump replied: „The Sahara border can not be bigger than the border with Mexico.“

Not only that the proposal is absurd, even the statement is wrong. The Sahara expands west-east for over 5,000 kilometers. The border between the US and Mexico is nearly 3,000 kilometers long. Sahara almost as double long as to Mexico.

Trump: „Believe me, I am very very intelligent, Paris is in Germany and the Belgium’s use the German flag. Makes it all easier for me to remember. Believe me“.

But compared to Trump’s other geography missteps, it seems harmless. After all, he had once located Paris in Germany and raved about the „city of Belgium“.

       No further comment needed.

Nobel prize economist Paul Krugman believes that Donald Trump will destroy democracy in the United States – and very soon.

All pics can be supersized if you click on.

Donald Trump, the „would-be Mussolini“.

„I think most political commentators still do not understand how deep the rottenness goes,“ Krugman writes in his column for The New York Times.

„I think they do not understand that democracy could die in a few months.“

Yes Donald – you are well trained !

In a new book of disclosures, Donald Trump is described as a paranoid egomaniac whose employees are constantly busy to prevent the US president from destroying the world. To discredit work and author will not be easy this time, because the author is the internationally acclaimed journalist legend Bob Woodward. The most explosive extracts of the new book.

     The White Trump House.

The „Washington Post“ quoted in advance from the new book by Pulitzer Prize winner Bob Woodward – and the picture that alone this White House newspaper report under US President Donald Trump draws is disturbing.

Yes, Mr. Trump, FEAR that book. Left, Bob Woodward.

This is true even on the premise that political Washington has hardened after nearly 20 months of Trump and other previously published revelation books.

Chaos, ignorance and disrespect reign in the White House.

The book title : „Fear – Trump in the White House“ (German: „Angst – Trump im Weissen Haus“) released 11th of September.

       Trumps White House.

If the „Washington Post“ report serves as a benchmark, then the adjective „shattering“ could be aptly chosen: The White House appears in the report as a hoard of chaos, and Trump as an unsuspecting and paranoid egomaniac whose employees ignore or sabotage instructions and remain permanent try to stop their boss from destroying the world.

The „never saying anything“ is left, a „sleeping mole“ !?!

Woodward does not name his sources, but claims to have held talks with numerous current and former Trump employees. If their statements are correct, then the conditions in Washington are much more dramatic than critics have previously suspected.

The most explosive statements of the new Trump revelation book:

„Let’s fucking kill Assad“.

Woodward reports that after a chemical weapons raid in Syria in April 2017, Trump called on Pentagon leader Jim Mattis and said he wanted President Bashar al-Assad to be killed, „Let’s fucking kill him, let’s go in“.

   Many people want him dead.

Mattis assured the president he would take care of it. After the phone call, Mattis told a high-level employee, „We will not do anything about it, we’ll be more modest.“

Trump understands „like a fifth or sixth grader“.

At a meeting of the National Security Council last January, Trump, according to Woodward, is said to have asked why US forces should be so heavily represented on the Korean peninsula.

Mattis’s response, according to Woodward, „We’re doing this to prevent the Third World War.“ After Trump left the session, Mattis is said to have attested to him the understanding of „a fifth or sixth grader“ – so the author quotes him.

                                The acting 5th-6th grader.

Adviser steals Trump letter for „national security reasons“.

Woodward’s research raises the question of how much control Trump has in the White House. The author writes, according to the Washington Post, that the then economic adviser Gary Cohn had „stolen a letter from Trump’s desk,“ with which the president had wanted to terminate a trade agreement with South Korea.

Cohn later told an employee that he had acted for reasons of national security. Trump did not notice the absence of the letter. What else they might have „stolen“ ?

Trump’s bedroom is „Devil’s Workshop“.

Woodward also talks about the stark desperation in the White House about Trump’s Twitter actions. The former Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus, has called Trump’s bedroom – where the President looks at cable TV and tweets – as the „workshop of the devil“.

The devil – busy in his workshop.

Trump, on the other hand, compared Priebus with „a little rat“ in conversation with a subordinate of his own chief of staff.

Trump is „an idiot“ and „we are in Crazytown“.

Trump split from Priebus in July 2017, followed by John Kelly. Woodward reports that Kelly said in a small round about Trump, „He’s an idiot, it’s useless trying to convince him of anything, he’s derailed, we’re in Crazytown.“

It was the worst job he ever had, Kelly added. Lawyer warns Trump against statement in Russia affair. For Trump, the book comes at an inopportune: in two months, there are intermediate elections to the congress. He is also under pressure in the Russia affair.

  Active supporter of Crazytown.

For „Fear: Trump in the White House,“ Woodward claims to have questioned dozens of sources from Trump’s Inner Circle, as well as documents, diary entries, and memos. Off The Washington Post has published a few excerpts in advance.

The most serious allegations against Trump in the overview:

Allegation 1: Trump knows so little about foreign and security policy that American interests are endangered.

Even attempts to convey Trump the most important foundations of foreign and security policy have apparently failed. According to one story, in January, the US president asked his National Security Council why the US was spending an expensive military presence on the Korean peninsula. „We’re doing this to avoid World War III,“ Defense Minister James Mattis clarified.

If one follows Nostradamus prophetic texts: Nostradamus saw Trump as the Antichrist who’ll trigger World War 3.

Trump once accused his generals of not doing enough to win the war in Afghanistan. Of what would bring the victory, the president obviously has a very simple view. „You should kill people,“ Trump said. „You do not need a strategy to kill people.“

If you give a „kid“ some toys (remember Trumps words: „I have a bigger button then you“) he wants to play with them, right ?

Many of the president’s key advisers, particularly in the security field, are „extremely worried,“ Woodward quotes a high-ranking official. He cited as reasons Trump’s „erratic nature, his relative ignorance, his inability to learn“ and „what they consider his dangerous views.“

      The ignorant, erratic menace.

Allegation 2: To prevent worse, Trump’s employees sabotage his decisions.

Trump’s „dangerous views“ are designed to get some of his staff so bad that they delay and sabotage decisions to save the president from himself.

No wonder that they try to prevent more danger.

For example, after a suspected chemical weapons attack Trump is said to have called his Defense Minister Mattis and demanded that the Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad be killed. Mattis had pretended to respond, and then to a high-ranking employee to say: „We will do nothing about it.“ It would be „much more moderate“ proceed.

Trump’s former business consultant Gary Cohn is said to have gone even further, according to Woodward. He had stolen a draft of Trump’s desk, with which the president wanted to terminate a trade agreement with South Korea. He had acted for reasons of national security, so Cohn should have later told a staff member. The President did not notice the absence of the document.

    What a Jenius  !!!

Allegation 3: Chaos and despair prevail in the White House thanks to Trump.

If Woodward’s accounts of Trump’s immorality are true, then do not be surprised how he describes the atmosphere in the White House. Chief of staff John Kelly once said that this was „the worst job I ever had“.

He did not know „why we are all here“. It was „pointless to try“ to „convince Trump of anything“ that the president was „out of control“. Kelly is also said to have called the president an „idiot“ in front of employees. My addition – Kelly was right !!

No further explanation needed. Right ?

Allegation 4: Trump insulted even his senior employees on the barbarity.

On Twitter you get an impression that the president sometimes takes on the tone and does not stop himself from cursing. According to Woodward’s research, even high-ranking employees feel this.

Some of the many employees (not anymore, they are all FIRED) verbally attacked and insulted by Trump.

He once called his former chief of staff Reince Priebus „little rat“ to his subordinate. Trump said he was „mentally handicapped“ by his Justice Minister Jeff Sessions and a „stupid Southerner“.

An US Presidential Word Treasure. Shame on him !

About his former security adviser H.R. McMaster is said to have made fun of Trump behind his back. He had embezzled McMaster in front of employees and once blasphemed, this wearing cheap suits „like a beer seller“.

Impeachement or not ?

The allegations against Trump are not yet sufficient for an impeachment procedure. But the resistance is growing. The president has to be overthrown. This is not least made clear by his telephone conversation with the author of the latest revelation book.

There is fear in the administration of the White House. And that’s the name of the book.

Trump accuses Woodward of not having spoken to him during the book searches. Woodward counters that he asked six to seven people in Trump’s environment to arrange a conversation with the president.

He likes better to talk to opponents then to his own staff.

Trump denies that anyone has spoken to him. Woodward mentions a senator, Trump analogously: Oh, yes, he mentioned that at one point or another. Woodward could have phoned him anytime.

Woodward says he tried everything humanly possible. That’s how most of the conversation goes. Towards the end, Trump mumbles „It’s gonna be a bad book“ several times and then whimsically states what success he has achieved: thriving economy, return of big companies, higher contributions from NATO partners and immediately.

Hey moron, don’t you realize that no one else likes you and no one want’s to be with you. You are alone. Don’t look that mad, if a well educated man leads a lady first. You won’t understand that anyhow. Click on pics to supersize.

Nixon has preempted the impeachment by resigning.

He repeats this several times and he looks like Richard Nixon in the final stage, which Bob Woodward once plunged with his colleagues Carl Bernstein.

But the hurdles are high: the US president would have to prove treason, bribery or serious crimes or offenses, the Senate would have to convict him with a two-thirds majority. Article I, Section 3, of the US Constitution regulates how an impeachment proceeding should proceed.

Sadly they don’t get them by the balls !!!

Nixon was then the impeachment by resignation preempted. The impeachment proceedings against Clinton after his Lewinsky affair were narrowly rejected.

Approval for Trump (in the US) fell to 37 percent.

Look at this behavior (body language): „No, I don’t eat my soup, I want a burger.“ And this „jumping jack“ claims to be the leader of the free world.

Last week the German magazine FOCUS made a survey with the question : „Who do you think is more dangerous for the world – TRUMP or PUTIN ?“
The answer was 76% Trump and 24% Putin !!

Trump’s erratic and ridiculous rule over Twitter, his „personnel policy“ and his provocations are far from sufficient for impeachment. Democratic congressman Brad Sherman’s impeachment application in July 2017 for obstructing the judiciary in connection with the dismissal of FBI chief Comey, fizzled.

Meanwhile, the American rural population has lost its faith in Trump’s promises. In the last survey, the rural population’s consent dropped from 60 to 37 percent (mid September 2018). And over 60 percent of Americans now reject Trump. One can only hope that the upcoming elections then reflect that.

Out of a similar situation and disbelieve of the population resulted in 1939 the power of the worst dictator the world had ever seen. Go and inform yourself in history. In the beginning Hitler was not like he is known for.  Ja ja, these faithfully saints !!

Such nice guys, perfect to lull their people. But then … what’s coming then ?

The chance is that American media have not become toothless – yet. They always reveal new incredible stories about Trump. Who lies as much as Trump, makes mistakes. And they will someday be fatal to him. Somebody will find the key with which this president can be put to an political end and the world freed from a nightmare.

Hopefully it will not be too late then. Once it was too late and everybody was asking later on: „How could it happen ? Why was no one able to STOP HIM ?“

My Tomato Sauce

Yesterday we had appetite for spaghetti and tomato sauce. Always easy and quick to make. But, bad luck, no more prepared sauce in the freezer. O.k., a chance to make some new. Except cooking time its so easy and quick to do. I always like to make a few liters at a time and freeze the leftover in portions for further use. Its a recipe from Tuscany, Italy, a bit modified with my sun dried tomatoes . I like to share it with you.

As better the tomatoes are, as better your sauce.

Ingredients.

10-12 large tomato  or 2 large cans (c. 1kg each) of tomatoes.

Fresh, I prefer full ripe, dark red, Roma tomatoes. If you can’t get them in good quality better use Roma tomatoes from a can, but fruit only, not the juice. The vantage is, they are already peeled.

2 small onions
3 cloves garlic
1 glass (c. 425g) sun-dried tomatoes in oil
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pinch  of sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 pinch  of pepper
some water as needed
5 basil leaves

I strongly recommend to peel the tomatoes.

How to do.

Wash the fresh tomatoes, dice and core them, or remove the tomatoes from the canning.
Peel and dice the onions. Peel off the garlic and press.

Sun-dried Pomodori we can by here in Uruguay.

Heat the olive oil (I like to use the oil of the sun-dried tomatoes), not too hot, otherwise the onions will quickly become dark and taste bitter.
Just sweat the onions so that they become golden.

   First cooking.

Add the tomatoes and deglaze with a little water.
Then add sugar, salt and pepper. And more ingredients if desired.
Cover and simmer gently for about 20 minutes, then crush with a blender to a fine sauce.

   Second cooking.

Sift the sauce that you get rid of the tomato cores.
Put the whole sifted sauce back on the stove.
Add the garlic and simmer under supervision for at least 2 hours with very low heat.
If it gets too thick, make it more fluid with a little water.

Finished delicious tomato sauce. During an earlier occasion made a bit more rustic. Sadly my Le Creuset takes 7 liters only.

Meanwhile, the tomato sauce would have become thicker.
Then season with pepper and salt.
Add the basil at the end, the oils unfold better and the taste remains.

Finally we had our spaghetti with Tuscan tomato sauce and sprinkled with finely grated Parmesan (Parmigiano).  Click on pics to supersize them.

Tips.

The longer the sauce cooks, the better it gets. I leave it cooking sometimes 3-4 hours !

Several times I received the question what to do to lower the acid within the sauce.
O.K. If needed you can add some sugar in different ways.
Add a teaspoon of sugar and/or a splash of red wine.
Add 1/2 a cup or more of good quality ketchup.

Another great way to sweeten your sauce is roasting your tomatoes, sprinkled with oregano. But – only with fresh tomatoes and then no sun-dried ones used. Just by the way, they are a delicious side dish on their own.

You also can add carrots, mushrooms, celery etc. but then its not a tomato sauce anymore.
Adding a bit of milk or cream would help too, but then you loose the nice red color quickly.
My favorite method is to add the sun-dried tomatoes, they really give great flavour.

I always let my sauce simmer for 3 to 4 hours (uncovered), enhancing the flavors ! If you have time let the sauce rest overnight and reheat carefully the next day – love and patience.

Leftovers always end up in the freezer for later use.

Later use of the sauce.

This sauce goes well with all kind of pasta and different cheeses, like mozzarella or Gruyere.
Who doesn’t like tomato sauce on pizza ? Can be a fantasy one (ham and corn) or the classic Margherita.
More of a fancy style is chicken breast on orecchiette with rustic tomato sauce, onions and red olives (left). Mouthwatering – this sauce on spaghetti and meatballs (right).

This easy to make sauce is base for dozens of different recipes. My personal base for a delicious „Sauce Bolognaise“.   Enjoy !

Culinary City Travel 2

And here my dear friends of lucullan lifestyle the second part of my list of city’s to visit and to have a fantastic culinary experience.   Above picture – great culinary brunch with friends at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Alberta Canada.

8th place Granada.

Drawn by the allure of the Alhambra, many visitors head to Granada unsure what to expect. What they find is a gritty, compelling city where serene Islamic architecture and Arab-flavoured street life go hand in hand with monumental churches, old-school tapas bars and counterculture graffiti art.

Alhambra, an European Must See Showplace.

The city, sprawled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, was the last stronghold of the Spanish Moors and their legacy lies all around: it’s in the horseshoe arches, the spicy aromas emanating from street stalls, the teterias (teahouses) of the Albayzin, the historic Arab quarter. Most spectacularly, of course, it’s in the Alhambra, an astonishing palace complex whose Islamic decor and landscaped gardens are without peer in Europe.

Hotel Abadia in the Centro of Granada. A perfect location to discover the city.
Absolutely need to try, tapas selection or the „best tuna I ever had in Europe“. All around the Centro many many restaurants, walking distance from the Abadia.

No fan of good food should miss the Spanish city of Granada. The best neighborhood where vacationers will find the typical food of the city is the Centro. Here you should taste Piononos (sweet biscuits with cream and syrup), Olla de San Anton (stew with rice, beans and sausage) and Jamon de Trevelez (smoked ham).

7th Place Bangkok.

Bangkok is as chaotic as cities get, but pause and look closer and you’ll discover deep-rooted traditions and a radiant culture. Zip down the streets in a colorful, tassel-lined „tuk-tuk“, passing Starbucks and food stalls selling grilled pork skewers for breakfast.

Street food at Sukhumvit – and – tuk tuk’s outside a Bangkok market.

A city that feels alive day and night, Bangkok offers a lot more than your average stopover destination. Most travelers stop for a few days before heading on north to Chiang Mai or to southern beaches like Koh Samui or Phuket – days that can easily be filled up with visiting beautiful temples, navigating night markets and sampling Bangkok’s famous food.

One of my personal favorite places in the world. The sunset buffet at the Oriental Hotel. I could enjoy this dozens of times and was never disappointed. The quality of food, the setting, the climate and atmosphere is one of a kind. The Oriental in Bangkok was chosen many years in a row as the No.1 hotel in the world. Wish I could to go there once again.

Lebanese, Indian, Thai, Seafood, Japanese Sushi – the choice is enough to satisfy the biggest glutton, yet it is all prepared to exacting standards. Fresh seafood is grilled a la minute, with rock lobster and river prawns highly popular. Each area has a dedicated kitchen team meaning this is more in tune with fine dining than a mass buffet.

     Hotel Mandarin Oriental Bangkok.

The roast meats section is most people’s choice for main, with roast prime rib beef, lamb and beef cheek in red wine jus. The meat is cooked to perfection and is deliciously tender. This is complemented by a selection of condiments including Dijon mustard and mint sauce. Don’t miss the dessert station which has a full range of western patisseries, homemade sorbet, exotic fruits and Thai desserts – form the classics (mango sticky rice is simply a must), to the lesser known traditional desserts, like fried mango from the BBQ.

A cocktail or cool beer at the river bar (where they also serve excellent Italian food) before dinner. And a few drinks (whatever your heart requires) at the Bamboo Bar (with a special smokers lounge) after dinner buffet at the Verandah Riverside, is guaranty for a perfect evening you won’t forget.

The thing that sets this Bangkok riverside buffet above any other is the fact that every offering is carefully prepared and expertly presented. This meticulous focus on the small details is what has come to define the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and what makes this meal a sure winner for an evening of indulgence on the river. There is a smart casual dress code at Mandarin Oriental’s Verandah-Riverside Terrace Buffet, so as at the River Bar, which means no sportswear or sandals.

a   The relaxed atmosphere at The Riverside (Rim Naam) is what I preferred, but fine dining in air-condition at „Le Normandie“, 2-star-Michelin . Le Normandie is  is the sine qua non of French food in the whole of Thailand.

On a trip to Bangkok in Thailand all your senses are required. The best food can be found in the Siam area. Here you will find an exotic selection of local dishes, such as chicken sate, sukiyaki (beef stripe soup) and khao gang (curry rice). At most food stalls you can not get enough of it.

Food in Bangkok, just on the street (skewers of all kind) or more elegant (rim nam) in a hotel restaurant.

Street food is a staple all over the city so you don’t need to look hard for authentic cuisine, and the recent introduction of the Michelin-guide has only cemented the city’s place on the culinary city hall of fame.

6th Place Melbourne.

Australia is known for having the most beautiful beaches and spectacular sunsets in the world. The best food was found by travelers in the South Yarra, Melbourne area. Above picture made out of my hotel room at the Crown Plaza at Yarra bank.

The famous rustic Aussie „Surf and Turf“. In front big shrimps (Surf) on green beans with garlic, behind a medium rare filet steak, crispy bacon and to perfection cooked pork-belly. Aside a kind of spicy Thousand Island sauce. What else does one need to be happy ?

The vibrant center is indicative of the city, with lively bars and restaurants along the Yarra River. Real Australians can enjoy delicious barbecues with friends and family in one of the hippest cities in the world. Aussie food, surf and turf, east meets west. Melbourne meantime ran Sydney the rank off.

  The Melbourne Midnight Burger.

The Midnight Burger at East Brunswick brewery Temple Brewing Co. has to be seen to be believed. Its black burger bun flummoxed at first sight, and when their head chef told us he uses charcoal in the recipe, we swore we’d never chomp it down. But after a craft beer or two, we took the plunge. Boy, are we glad we did! The Midnight Burger—in all it’s black bunned, bacon and pickle-topped glory—is EPIC. It might be time for another best burgers round-up because this is definitely vying for the accolade of best burger in Melbourne.

5th Santiago de Chile.

Santiago was founded in 1541 by conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. Chile’s capital is formally called Santiago del Nuevo Extremo, a marvelous demarcation for the latitude and attitude at this southerly extreme.

Every need you find at La Vega Central Market.

And it can’t happen soon enough.   Chef Rodolfo Guzman of Borago (won 2017 a prize belonging to the 50 best restaurants in the world) states: „I cribbed a dozen Spanish-to-Latin-to-English databases in an attempt to identify the plants and proteins—boldo, moye, rica rica, kolof, piure, guanaco—that I use in the kitchen. As far as I am concerned, to truly understand a land, you must understand its ingredients“.

“Without culture,” he says, “you cannot have your soul. And food is culture.” Top right: Braised Beef Stew with Garlic. Bottom left: Cream Scallops with Stewed Chickpeas and Tomatoes, here spiced with merken, a traditional Chilean red chile spice mix. Bottom right: A Chilean seafood platter with fried plantanes.
Yummy empanadas with black olives, meat and a spicy salsa. Sadly they don’t like spices in Uruguay.

On the way through the vineyards of Casablanca we pull over at a modest roadside joint to devour empanadas de pino baked in a wood-fired clay oven. The filling, rich with shredded beef, onions, and olives, is a favorite of both gauchos and taxi drivers, not to mention myself. A country side treat of the finest.

4th place Tokio.

The Japanese city of Tokyo offers an exciting mix of modern and traditional. The skyscrapers shine in the neon light and historic temples await the visit of the travelers. The district of Chiyoda is known for its excellent food. 24/7 the life is pulsing, always big crowds, but I liked it, because on the food side dishes are always fresh renewed.

A Robot restaurant, not my style, being honest. But I wanted to show that in Tokio one can find nothing that does not excist.

The diversity of the city is also reflected in the restaurants. The best establishments have more Michelin stars than all the restaurants in Paris and New York combined. The most famous dish Sushi has taken the palate by storm.

On the left „ramen“ the famous Japanese spicy soup. Available in thousands of variety’s. To enjoy this speciality you have to dive in and taste. Same with sushi, which conquered the world anyhow. But having sushi from a sushi master in a specialized restaurant is a delight. Click on pictures to enjoy the view of such an excellent food.

Tokyo is a city of 100,000 restaurants, and sometimes it feels like the same dish everywhere. Hakata-style tonkotsu and flavor bombs like the diabolically fiery noodles served at joints like Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto. I love their spicy ramen.

A visit to Japan without an original Teppanyaki and show is like not being in Japan. You can find this in many places of the world, but the atmosphere in Japan is totally different. Just the fun and the applause they can show is an amazing experience.

3rd place Athens.

Having an European city within the 3 top ones is may be unusual, but this one is often so underestimated and deserves a top rank. Athens has so much to offer, it is the ancient capital of the world. The magnificent Acropolis, visible from almost every part of the city, is the hub around which Athens still revolves. This temple city, built in the 5th century BC, serves as a daily reminder to Greeks of their heritage and the city’s many transformations.

Just a butcher shop in Athens. Isn’t that something ?

There are plenty of surprises to be discovered, so make sure to leave room in your schedule for spontaneous discovery: buy a ticket to that dance show that’s just starting as you walk by, or sit down at the restaurant where the musicians are setting up. You’ll be rewarded.

To die for, charcoal grilled – Gyros left and Haloumi right. Click on pics to size up for a better view.

If you are looking for traditional Greek national dishes, you are guaranteed to find them in Athens in Greece. Here you will find delicious souvlaki (grilled meat and vegetable skewers) and koulouri (sesame rings). It is best to pay a visit to the Plata area.

What a feast – mouthwatering – and right the famous Greek yoghurt with honey and walnuts.

If one wants to get to know another side of the Greek cuisine there are many possibilities. Especially the street food is excellent here.

Left the yearly Athens street food festival and right the typical street food – sesame rings with different fillings, including ham-and-cheese, turkey-and-cheese, chocolate, tomato-and-olive and many more.

2nd place Lima.

When fog bundles its colonial facades and high rises, Lima’s enchantments come across as all too subtle. After Cairo, this sprawling metropolis is the second-driest world capital, rising above a long coastline of crumbling cliffs.

Lima special, Tallarines on the left and Papa Rellenas on the right.

But Lima is also sophisticated, with civilization that dates back millennia. Stately museums display sublime pottery; galleries debut edgy art; solemn religious processions recall the 18th century and crowded nightclubs dispense tropical beats. Don’t miss the capital’s culinary genius, part of a gastronomic revolution for more than 400 years.

Absolute fantastic, both Peruvian specialties are nothing for everyone, but worth to try. Left the „melting in your mouth“ pulpo (octopus) and right the guinea-pig, soft-delicate-tender grilled pork.

This is Lima. Shrouded in history, gloriously messy and full of aesthetic delights. The land of more then 3000 variety’s of potatoes, you should see. Don’t even think of missing it.

This shows the difference in Peruvian cuisine, Mariscos platter or Alpaca skewers.

World Travel Award 2016 – Again. The South American country of Peru has been recognized as the world’s best gastronomic destination for the fifth time in a row. See my article „World’s No.1 Culinary Destination“, posted on December 7, 2016.

1st place Hong Kong.

The most popular culinary destination, according to opinion of international travelers, is Hong Kong. Above all, the metropolis is famous for its lively city center and skyscraper skyline. The best food is on Hong Kong Island.

Can you imagine what this is ??

The variety of dishes is remarkable. You should try everything from Dim Sum to Kau Kee to Wantan noodles and Poon Choi (Chinese casserole).

Take a trip to the bustling Mong Kok and head to the famous Ladies Market. Make sure you haggle hard for anything you want to take home and try out the street food vendors in Mong Kok. The best street food vendors are located by Dundas Road or in Fa Tuen Street Market, another worthy local market to visit.

  Hong Kong’s Jumbo Floating Restaurant.

The Chinese cuisine is very varied. A typical dish in North China is „Huoguo“ – the Chinese fire pot. Typical are two different variants – „Sichuan fire pot“ and „Mongolian hot pot“. The fire pot Sichuan uses a very sharp background. The Mongolian hot pot, however, is much milder.

Good fun for a group of friends, sitting around a hot pot and enjoying food.

The main ingredients of the fire pot are wafer-thin slices of lamb and beef. In addition salad and cabbage leaves. Other ingredients include shrimp, shrimp paste, cuttlefish, algae leaves, various mushrooms, fresh noodles or glass noodles, tang, tofu, and everything you can imagine. Even pancakes come in the fire pot.

Being in Hong Kong and not having some Peking (Beijing) duck cooked to an amazing perfection, would be a great mistake. Have a lesson in one of the specialized duck restaurants and learn how they make this famous, well known mouthwatering dish. Traditionally the meat is eaten with spring onion, cucumber and sweet bean sauce with pancakes rolled around the fillings.

Hyatt Regency Peking Duck serving, individual-elegant.

The Hyatt Regency Hong Kong Sha Tin hotel would be my recommendation for the perfect duck experience. Walk into the restaurant and you’ll see the ducks lined up ready to be roasted to perfection. The slices of duck skin aren’t too oily and pancakes are very thin.

Peking duck at the Peking Garden Restaurant, more tourist mass-serving. My second choice, after the Hyatt.

If you’re looking to impress out of town guests with fine Chinese cuisine, the place is Peking Garden, particularly the Alexandra House location. It features rich Chinese decor and you can see a hand pulled noodle demonstration. But everyone comes here for the Peking duck that is carefully carved at the table. The slices are thinner than at Spring Deer, with a good ratio of meat to crispy skin. The pancakes are almost paper thin.

Here the denouement of the earlier picture. All these are fridge magnets. You easily can take home now your favorite Hong Kong dish.  Chinese business imaginative.

I would suggest anyhow to book a guided food tour in Hong Kong, and some other city’s of course as well, to get the maximum out of your culinary city food adventure. Hope you enjoyed this ex-curse of some „delicious“ city’s.  This all is travellers choice of course, to me:     My personal favorite city still is Bangkok, especially the Oriental Hotel !

Culinary City Travel 1

During a recent birthday lunch we discussed travel and destinations and what is worth to see, where to eat or/and can be the necessary food time a culinary experience, and and. Of course it can ! Then I decided out of what I’ve read in the past and combined with my own experiences to put together some destinations, most travelers love because of unusual and exceptional range of gourmet offers which can range from exceptional street food to star restaurants where connoisseurs can treat their palates.

This chart speaks for itself. I read it is from 2016, means still prevailing information.

Result is the following list of 15 city’s where I think one can find all one would expect. A loose order from 15 (as good as others, but…) to 1 (which I think is the best). Most pics are from my travels, some are of the internet, because in my time we used to make slides !!

Ranking city’s in my opinion.

15th place Florence.

The numerous regions of Italy are known for their different interpretations of tasty cuisine. In Florence, especially the Centro Storico district is recommended by travelers for their good food.

Schiacciata, an airy bread with olive oil and salt.
Pappardelle with cinghiale is pasta with wild boar sauce. Especially recommended in Florence. An Italian treat and palate joy.
Culinary adventurers should definitely taste Lampredotto It is cow’s stomach and sounds much more bad then it tastes.

14th place Valencia.

Warm, sunny climate and beautiful beaches and stubborn buildings characterize the image of the Spanish city of Valencia. Travelers are particularly drawn to the Ciutat Vella district.

You can either sip a sangria in one of the many bars along the promenade or enjoy the local tapas in an inviting restaurant like La Vietnamita.
This is a must in Valencia, the local version of Paella. I love it, because it is very saucy, not as dry as most other Paellas. Eaten in Casa de Tapas.

13th Place Porto.

The coastal city of Porto in Portugal is known for its medieval district of Ribeira (extremely colorful suburb) and the historic merchants houses and cafes.

Especially the area Boavista is recommended by tourists for the good food. Cabrito asado, means roasted kid.
Sardinhas, bacalhau, tripas and francesinhas – Francesinhas is a Porto sandwich. Can be awful, or yummy, be careful !!  But this is great, Marmelada with cheese – Marmelada is the wonderful quince paste the Spanish call membrillo. This combo may be a starter or a nibble.
Porto is also known for the production of port wine. The Douro wine region is located in the east of the city.

12th place Hamburg.

The German city of Hamburg developed to a culinary highlight. Try to experience the culinary variety of Hamburg’s lace cooks, enjoy superb and creative cuisine at the trendsetters, the stylish traditionalists and the best examples international cuisine.

The Speicherstadt, Hamburg Germany is the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations, oak logs, in this particular case. It is located in the port of Hamburg—within the HafenCity quarter—and was built from 1883 to 1927.

The newest Hamburg landmark. This new Opera House, the „Elbphilharmonie“, build in the „Speicherstadt“ on top of old warehouses is a must to visit. It is very hard to get tickets, but the 360 degree outlook terrace is free of charge. An amazing view over the whole city.

The district was built as a free zone to transfer goods without paying customs. As of 2009, both the district and the surrounding area are under redevelopment. One already can see the new Hamburg „Philharmonie“ in the background of the pic above (Hamburgs new landmark). The whole warehouse district, as the first site in Hamburg, was awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You will see, Hamburg’s gastronomy has an incredible lot to offer.

A must to try Labskaus. Labskaus is a culinary specialty from Northern Germany and in particular from the cities of Bremen, Hamburg, and Luebeck. The main ingredients are salted meat or corned beef, potatoes, and onion. Some recipes put beetroot, pickled gherkin, or even herring into it, while others have these ingredients as side orders as you see above. But it always comes with a fried egg.
As already mentioned  Hamburgs international cuisine is fantastic. Above excamples from the Atlantik Hotel Alster. Left: Tender, sweet scallops – paired with a tomato-rich garbanzo stew. Right: Hamburgs version of a beef tartar to mix by the guest him- or herself.

One of the best restaurant addresses is Thomas Imbusch’s new restaurant, its called 100/200, pronounced „One Hundred, Two Hundred“.

Modern concept, the whole restaurant has a view into the kitchen with this exceptional Molteni stove.

A French Molteni stove, the Rolls-Royce among the stoves, forms the center of the restaurant. It cooks on the stove (at one hundred degrees) and bakes it (at two hundred degrees), hence the name that is meant to reflect what Imbusch is about: The essence of good cooking, craft, hospitality and enjoyment.

11th Place Singapore.

Travelers will find ancient temples, rain-forests and white sandy beaches. But also culinary, the country has much to offer, especially in the Orchard area vacationers will come on their expense. About 30 years ago Singapur and Bangkok were to me the No.1 culinary destination. Still within the first 5, but I also included in this rating other travelers opinion.

The international variety in Singapore is just incredible.

The excellent restaurants are made up of a mix of different culinary trends. The Indonesian food culture has been influenced by dishes from China, India and Malaysia and makes even the most demanding fans happy.

Two of my favorites in Singapore, left the chilli crab and right chicken and lamb satay’s with ketupat coco rice baked in banana leaf baskets.

Singapore, „Hawker Center“, means well-organized, obsessively clean, ‘stand in line, get your food, proceed to a table and eat’ food stalls. Which is a good thing, because you know you won’t get any stomach bugs with your Hainanese Chicken Rice, the national dish of Singapore, best eaten piping hot from a Hawker stall. There are several all over the city.

Don’t leave Singapore without sampling Kaya Toast, a toasted sandwich slathered with a type of jam called Kaya.  This popular dish is to die for. Singapore toast, filled with coconut jam dipped in to a combo of soft egg and dark soy.   OMG !!!   It’s sweet, salty and right up my alley, best description – it is „umami“. My most favorite breakfast in Singapore.

10th place Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia has so much to offer: a modern skyline, glass skyscrapers, white sandy beaches and dense rain-forests. The best food is available in the Mid Valley. This city is the culinary heaven for ultra modern fans.

A high rise dining room on the 23rd floor of Troika Sky Dining. Cantaloupe may not be a rooftop restaurant but it sure comes close, with slanting, floor-to-ceiling angled glass windows. A must-visit destination for the setting alone, the view of the looming spires of the Petronas Twin Towers and the rest of the city, is best appreciated at night, and must be among the most imposing in KL. The food is just as impressive, offering a concise, haute menu with French, Italian, Greek and Spanish flavours evident in its dishes.

Hundreds and hundreds of different dishes are to choose from. Up left typical banana leaf rice, up right char siew, down left ikan bakar, down right best wings I ever had somewhere. Even if you’re not a huge fan of grilled fish, the ikan bakar at Kedai Kak Jat exists to change your mind about it. Maybe it’s the freshness of the fish, the spicy marinade or the precision with which they’re grilled to create a charred, crispy exterior while the flesh remains moist and flaky; whatever it is, this is the ikan bakar worthy of going the extra mile for (in this case, going up Bukit Petaling at lunch time).

The colorful streets full of food stalls are overloaded with a mix of Malaysian, Chinese, Indian and European cuisine. Everything is modern, from traditional to traditional.

9th place Las Vegas.

The city of Las Vegas in the US has much more to offer in addition to colorful clubs and 24-hour casinos. Numerous restaurants on the boulevard have very different culinary directions. From trendy bars on rooftop terraces to elegant venues and cheap dinners, there’s really everything.

The Steak House at Circus Circus has been voted best of Las Vegas for over 30 years. Two T-bone steaks, for the two of us, grilled to perfection.

The mouth-watering cuisine and impeccable service make this the best kept dining secret in Vegas! Those who know fine dining know The Steak House. This award-winning restaurant features mesquite-grilled steaks, prime rib, lobster and crab legs in a traditional steakhouse setting. My other favorite places were Andiamo Italian Steakhouse and Joe’s seafood at Caesars Palace.

We always wanted to experience Stone Crab at Joe’s, but in Miami we couldn’t get a reservation, in Vegas finally we got lucky.   Joe’s features an extensive selection of seafood, flown in fresh daily, to complement the world’s finest Florida Stone Crab claws. Trust me, this is an amazing experience. As always, click on pics to supersize for a better view!

Fresh stone crabs are found in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. They are hand harvested, one claw at a time, and thrown back to the sea where the harvested limbs regrow. Joe Weiss, and his wife Jennie, discovered this unknown delicacy in the early 1920s, and soon after, began serving them at their restaurant in Miami Beach.

And this is just amazing, the sweet treat of Joe’s lemon pie. One of the best we ever had in the world. And we had a few, ha !

A meal inside Joël Robuchon’s jewel-hued rooms is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so opt for the full experience. The 16-course parade of transcendent French cuisine takes more than three hours, makes ample use of caviar, black truffles and foie gras and won’t leave you contemplating a slice of pizza on the way home.  Joel’s is a 3star Michelin restaurant and the most  decadent on the Las Vegas Strip.

The Robuchon dining room, left and Robuchon’s lounge, where one can forget time with a cognac of $300,– .

It is part of the famous Mansion hotel-within-a-hotel in the MGM Grand. You have to be invited to stay there, and rooms start at $5,000 a night. You aren’t even allowed to visit the hotel – it is within a secret courtyard hidden in the MGM Grand.

This was much more my style. A fantastic „Tunesian Lamb“ at the „DB Brasserie“ within the Venetian where we had a fantastic 3night package .

It goes that Robuchon is America’s second-most expensive eatery after New York’s Masa. The 16-course degustation menu to $425 per person.  That brings the REAL COST of dining at Robuchon (including 8.1% tax and 20% tip) to $544 for one, or $1,088 for two. Wine pairings are available at $295, $595 and $995 per person. Not for the small budget.

Since I am a history lover (as you can see throughout my posts) I take the chance to give you my best „Must See“ tip for Las Vegas. Take a stroll through the Neon Boneyard and you’ll stumble upon the most unique signage ever – vintage Vegas at its best. Some of these signs are as tall as a house! The boneyard has 150-plus restored signs  and many more.

Las Vegas is of course not on the cheap side, even a usual burger or a pizza has a price. But if you look for a destination where one finds „the whole world“ on one spot, then visit this city. I can’t even imagine what one won’t find in Las Vegas. But there is more to come, the gambling city is only place 7 on my favorite list.  Stay tuned to part 2 – next week.

Birthday Lunch

Although we have winter season here in Uruguay Anna liked to celebrate her birthday with a light summer lunch menu, which I gladly fulfilled.

We prepared 3 courses in which the starter comprised already 3 different ones. All together it was good fun, very delicious and we had a nice party. I decided to go for seafood and changed the recipes to all of ours and our guests delights. Some pics are from earlier occasions.

First drink.

As a welcome drink we had a German sparkling wine „Soehnlein Brilliant Rose“. What a nice color in the glass (see pic). Bought here in Uruguay for same price as in Germany – not to shabby ayhh !

The Starter.

1. Tuna Mousse.
The tuna mousse is a typical Italian appetizer, which can be offered very differently. Normally with ricotta. Classic as a mousse, but also as a finger food. You can also use it for Crostini and Tramezzini. Because of the lemon, it tastes nice and fresh.

Tuna mousse, enriched with pickles and sun-dried tomatoes. No ricotta because of one person with lactose intolerance.

2. Shrimp Salad.
The classic French one with a self made dressing of yogurt, ketchup, lemon juice, chilli powder, dill and a good shot of Cognac. All on a bed of greens.

Shrimps or Crevetten in German, with slices of button mushrooms and the delicious Cognac dressing.

3. Salmon Tartar.
My modification of an classic Latin American dish – salmon ceviche. Made with ice cold salmon, boiled egg, red onion, lemon juice, apple, chives and spices. A very delightful starter which we use in summer time often as a main course.

  Very tasty salmon tartar.

Second Drink.

This wine tasted and bought at the Deicas-Juanico winery. Uruguayan Preludio from the Deicas Family. A very delicious semi dry white wine. Golden color (see pic) and a strong earthy, fruity taste. It’s music on your pallet. Notice the music-note frame on the label. This 14,5% alcohol strong wine accompanied perfect the well herbed and spiced seafood dishes.

The Main.

As main course we had a butter pan fried salmon filet with homemade Swiss Roesti, green leaf-salad and two different dressings. A Greek tzatziki-dill dressing and a German spicy horseradish-cream dressing.

Our salmon filet and the Roesti, see above. I do not like the salmon served, like in many restaurants under-cooked and still waxy inside. They might think its modern cuisine. Mine should be nicely browned outside and still soft and juicy, but well cooked, inside. I accomplish this by myself with sealing the salmon on all sides, see pic down here.
Above right, similar occasion a few month earlier.   Salmon in „honey and Bavarian mustard“ sauce on Roesti.

Third Drink.

Serving a digestive drink after a filling meal I used an ultra rare German specialty, a „Lutheraner“. This is a herbal liqueur made with an unchanged recipe (since 1529) after the suggestion of Martin Luther, Wittenberg. It was, as history says, his favorite drink.

Left: The liqueur „a la Luther“ – Lutheraner.  Right: The famous reformer Martin Luther, painted 1529 by Lucas Cranach the elder.

Fourth Drink.

Before dessert was coming out we served a classic German dessert wine. Years ago brought with me from Germany, a „Franken Riesling Auslese“ from Wuerzburg. Just 9% of alcohol, but so light and fruity, strong natural sweetness on the palate. A dream to drink.

Wuerzburger Stein, Buergerspital (since 1316) special location below the castle of Wuerzburg.

The Dessert.

Finally we had an „one ingredient“ banana ice cream with lychees and strawberries, topped with whipped cream and poppy seeds. No cream for the lactose person of course.

Banana ice made last summer. Frozen banana into a blender, stir roughly, mix a bit coffee powder in, blend til smooth and enjoy. Perfect ice cream done in minutes.
Its absolute delicious. Just pep it up to your satisfaction. The right pic shows my banana ice with strawberries. The nice color of the ice you’ll receive with mixing a few strawberries into the banana ice (step 3 above).

This short post about a birthday lunch contains a lot of different recipes. If you are interested in one, just send me a request.  Enjoy !!

STROKE

This was sent in by my friend Bill, I updated it a bit, added all the pics and pass it on.

The story.

„“During a BBQ, a woman (Jane) stumbled and took a little fall – she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) …she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital – (a little later Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be still with us today. Some don’t die, they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. Very very sad too.““

First aid ! The missing word up there in the pic is „lower“ – lower temperature.

It takes a minute only to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

Recognizing a stroke.

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

8 Signs You Had A Stroke And Might Not Know It. Don’t Ignore These Signs.

If a blood vessel leading to the brain is obstructed, it will start to bleed and can cause an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, dangerous conditions which are often fatal. As with most health problems, the symptoms of stroke are often ignored. Strokes are very dangerous and are currently on the list of leading causes of death. This is why it’s important to learn how to recognize the early signs of stroke.

Here are the top early symptoms of a stroke :

1. Headaches and migraines.

If you’re experiencing a bad case of migraine or headache for a longer period, you need to visit a doctor immediately in order to rule out stroke.

2. A sudden onset of fatigue.

Extreme fatigue for a prolonged period can be a sign of stroke, but it is often an overlooked symptom.

The American Stroke Association suggests following the FAST acronym for recognizing the symptoms of stroke. The acronym stands for:

3. F – face drooping on one side.

4. A – arm numbness or weakness in one side of the body.

5. S – speech difficulty.

When a stroke occurs, the lack of blood supply to the brain may cause slurred or garbled speech. You may think that you’re speaking clearly, but if someone says that your speech is garbled, take the symptom very serious!

6. T – time is of the essence in cases of stroke. Call an ambulance immediately as this step is often the thin line between life and death! In the US or Uruguay you can call 911, in Germany and most other European country’s it would be 112.

You see the symptoms 3 to 6 are the most important ones and form the word F A S T  !

This formula is easy to notice and easy to apply.

Here are other signs of stroke you should pay attention to:

7. Vision problems in one eye.

Blurred vision or seeing double in one eye is often one of the most overlooked symptoms of a stroke.

8. Confusion and difficulty thinking.

When a stroke occurs, the brain is starved of oxygen and blood which leads to confusion and inability to speak or think properly.

I like it even FASTER !

New Sign of a Stroke ——– Stick out Your Tongue.

NOTE:   Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person to ‘stick’ out his tongue. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

More Fog of Trump

To the previous article I received so many comments that I would like to publish only a „post update“ here. Otherwise it would go beyond the scope of the „Comments“ section. Today in German and English. Use the translate button on the right – Google isn’t perfect, but it will help. Also, if you like, click on the smaller pics and size them up.

Historiker Stern: Donald Trump beweist die Verdummung der Amerikaner.

Wer ist Fritz Stern ?

Fritz Richard Stern (born:2. Februar 1926 in Breslau; died: 18. More about this great historian in Wikipedia, worth to read !

Amerikas „Verdummungsprofet“.          America’s „Dumbing Down Prophet“.

Angela Merkel: „Hi Donald, wie denkst Du darueber das mich euer Time Magazin zur „Person of the Year“ gekuert hat ?“
Angela Merkel: „Hi Donald, how do you feel about that your Time Magazine has made me the“ person of the year „?“

Donald Trump: „Totaler Quatsch, Fake News, die haben ’nen Vogel bei Time, die hatten mich gemeint und nicht Dich, Angela.“
Donald Trump: „Total nonsense, fake news, they are out of their mind, they meant me and not you, Angela.

Donald Trump: „Hier ist der Beweis ! Leider ein wenig verunglueckt das Foto.“
Donald Trump: „Here’s the proof! Unfortunately, the photo spoiled a bit.“

Angela Merkel: „Ist doch nicht so schlimm Donald – brauchst Dich doch dafuer nicht zu schaemen, das Du nur 3. Wahl warst.“
Angela Merkel: „It’s not that bad Donald – you do not have to be ashamed of yourself that you only were 3rd choice.“

Confessions of an enemy of the people.

Yahoo picture (6th of August 2018) to the following article:

Jerry Adler (Senior Editor, Yahoo News) article in Yahoo 6th of August 2018:

„““President Trump has taken to calling reporters “enemies of the people,” evoking memories of Soviet-era show trials in which officials who had fallen out of favor were forced to confess to imaginary crimes before their executions. Nothing like that has been proposed for American journalists, at least not yet, but if it happened, I imagine it happening something like this:

Comrades!

I stand before you accused of being a disgusting person, a member of the Failing Fake News Media who invent lies to make the president look bad. Thank you for catching me before I can cause more division & distrust, or even cause a War! I am very unpatriotic and totally unhinged because America is WINNING AGAIN, so it’s a good thing I’ve been caught. Thank you, President Trump for Making America Great Again by exposing people like me.

I am accused of spreading the Hoax that Vladimir Putin wanted Trump to win, which was totally Fake News that I made up to justify the Rigged Russia Witch Hunt. I even got Putin to agree, because I knew that would make Trump look bad. Russia is very unhappy that Trump won, by the way, as Trump says himself. But that’s something the Fake News Media, like NBC for example, wouldn’t ever report, right?

Right?

I made up the story that Donald Jr., Jared and Manafort met with a Russian operative who was offering intel on Hillary Clinton. This was a total lie at the time, because the White House put out a statement explaining that the meeting was about Russian adoption. The president now says the meeting was actually to get information on an opponent, which he says is totally legal and done all the time in politics. So I am guilty of reporting the truth prematurely, which is just as bad as lying.

President Trump was talking about me when he said that “what you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.” We showed Fake News pictures of Queen Elizabeth checking her watch while waiting for Donald Trump to arrive for their meeting, totally contradicting Trump on the fact that it was she who kept him waiting.

And I admit that I never report any good news coming out of the administration, like the 4.1 percent growth rate in the second quarter. You didn’t see that in the New York Times, did you? That’s because I’d rather spread lies about the size of the U.S. trade deficit, pretending that it isn’t actually, as President Trump said at the 33-minute mark in his speech in Ohio Saturday night, an “$817 billion trade deficit among all countries over the last number of years. Think of it per year, per year. $817 billion.” I didn’t understand how it could be both “over the last number of years” and also “per year,” but in any case I prefer to attack the administration with Fake News statistics like this one from the Deep State U.S. Census Bureau, which shows the deficit has been averaging around $500 million for the last eight years, and never reached $800 billion in history.

Why do we do it? Mostly for the ratings. We only have until the end of Trump’s second term to make money off him, because after he’s gone, nobody will watch us ever again. Of course if we were as smart as we think we are, we would have figured out by now Fox News has the highest ratings because they tell the truth about Trump.

I like to pretend that I’m a member of the elite, only Trump is much richer than I am, with a bigger apartment, and he has a very good brain, and it’s driving me crazy.

The sad truth is, we’re suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome. We can’t stand that he beat Hillary even with her 3 million illegal votes, which we refuse to acknowledge on the ridiculous excuse that there’s no evidence for it. We hate the idea that America is winning again. We are thin-skinned and don’t take well to criticism, or to threats, or the president whipping thousands of his followers into a fist-shaking, catcalling mob. That’s what it means to be an enemy of the people.

And this has been going on for a long time, even long before Trump. Remember the “lame-stream media”? That was us! Watergate, that whole phony deal, was something we concocted because we didn’t like Nixon, either. As far back as the 1950s, we were totally one-sided in our coverage of the civil-rights movement, because we refused to say anything good about Jim Crow. No wonder so many white supremacists still hate us.

So, comrades, yes, I am very “dangerous & sick.” I am ashamed of everything I have done to hurt President Trump and stop his agenda, and the mean things I said about Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ eye shadow, or actually that someone else said, but it was at a dinner full of reporters so practically the same thing.

Yes. I admit it: I am an enemy of the people.

There’s only one thing to do with me.

Lock me up.“““

And one more little story „Private conversations of our celebrities“.

Donald Trump: „This Belgium is a wonderful city here in Europe, glad to be with you Angela.“

Angela Merkel: „OH GOD, Donald, you’re so stupid, don’t know what to say. Does anyone know where and when you went to school?“

Angela Merkel: „No reason Donald to feel that sad, people know your IQ.“

Laughter is better than annoying but ignorance is not a solution for the „TRUMP SITUATION“.

Angela Merkel: „Sag mal Emmanuel  – hat Trump auch schon versucht Dir ins Ohr zu knutschen?“. „Ja stimmt Angela, hat er, wie Du siehst. Brigitte war davon auch nicht sehr begeistert“.
Angela Merkel: „Tell me Emmanuel – has Trump already tried to snog your ear?“. „Yes Angela you are right, he has, as you can see. Brigitte wasn’t very enthusiastic about it“.

We only can hope, that more Americans wake up and get rid of this CLOWN !

The Fog of Trump

Sorry dear readers, I can’t let the chance go to inform you about an interesting blog I found. Its Robert Reich’s one. He is a very well known and eminent authority on all kinds of modern life, economics and politics.   Click on: http://robertreich.org/

  Robert Reich

Robert B. Reich is Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and Senior Fellow at the Blum Center for Developing Economies. He served as Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration, for which Time Magazine named him one of the ten most effective cabinet secretaries of the twentieth century. He has written 15 books, including the best sellers „Aftershock“, „The Work of Nations,“ and“Beyond Outrage,“ and, his most recent, „The Common Good.“ He is also a founding editor of the American Prospect magazine, chairman of Common Cause, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and co-creator of the award-winning documentary, „Inequality For All.“ He’s also co-creator of the Netflix original documentary „Saving Capitalism.“

His recent post „The Fog of Trump“ should be known by many people and politicians around the world, as well as his writing in general.  I added the pics from the internet and use the chance to spread this important information about the lunatic Trump.

Robert Reich writes – Trump is more clever than we think.

Trump uses 5 tactics to create a fog of confusion and bewilderment, so we don’t pay attention to the real damage he’s doing – undermining our democracy; rewarding the rich and hurting the working class, middle class, and the poor; stoking hatefulness; and undercutting America’s standing in the world.

1. His first tactic is to distract us — dominate the news with tweets and rants, accusations, who he’s fired, who he’s insulted, what he’s demanded. He wants us to be so preoccupied with all this that we lose sight of the big picture.

2. His second tactic is to divide and conquer, pitting groups against each other, riling up his base, stoking racial tensions, and vilifying opponents. He targets transgender people in the military. Goes after athletes – mostly black – who won’t stand for the anthem. Fuels fears of immigrants and foreigners, of liberals and Democrats. This way, public dialogue and discussion becomes so angry, bitter, and vitriolic that we end up shouting at each other instead of seeing the damage Trump is actually doing.

3. His third tactic is to lie and distort. He generates a torrent of “alternative facts” so we become disoriented and confused. Asserting that 3 to 5 million people fraudulently voted for Hillary Clinton in the last election, with no evidence they did. That unauthorized immigrants are responsible for a disproportionate number of murders and rapes. That climate change isn’t caused by people. His goal is for us to lose confidence in the truth so we can’t be sure of what he’s doing.

4. His fourth tactic is to conjure up conspiracies. He fuels paranoia about a “deep state” that’s intent on removing him from office, engaged in a “witch hunt” to undermine him, plotting to impeach him. But he never identifies who or what this “deep state” actually is. The mere assertion of a conspiracy is enough to generate suspicion, erode trust in the political system and in the media, and sow doubts about anyone who criticizes him or any findings that could show he acted illegally.

5. His fifth and final tactic is: accuse the accusers. He alleges that others are doing what he is in fact doing. When the media catch him in a lie, he accuses them of disseminating fake news. He allows corporate lobbyists to run departments and agencies, and then accuses critics of being part of the Washington swamp. He seeks to cover up whatever he and his aides did with Russian operatives, and then accuses investigators of a being involved in a coverup.

These 5 tactics are all designed to hide what Trump is actually doing so we don’t mobilize against him. Be aware.     Don’t allow Trump’s fog to cloud the truth.

To everyone, especially Americans, DON’T ALLOW TRUMP TO CHEAT YOU TOO !

Just got this added to a comment ( That should put DOTARD in orbit!!! Good job Melania!!!) from „The Don“.

Winter in Uruguay

Today, 1st of August 2018, we have the first frost this year.

Temperatures around Zero Celsius are very rare in Uruguay. This morning we had minus two Celsius and the first frost this year. Its cold yes, but the fresh air and the sun coming up over the river compensate for it. And for us no problem at all, we have lovely woodfires going and the house is very comfortable.

Interesting also how the frost is on the roof except the part where we have the heater going inside. And interesting how the water drops are frozen on our lemons. No need to have some extra ice cubes with limoncello. When the sun is fully up all is gone anyway.

                Comfortable heating.
