During the last few years I always came along some strange pieces of art, or whatever it is, or whatever it means. I thought some pics might interest you and I like to share them.
Personal tastes are totally individual and different, to me no matter to discuss. Art is – if it is art – anyhow free from explanation and discussion.
We only can make up our own personal minds what it means, what it is for or what people try to say through it. So – make up your own mind about objects I found along the „Uruguayan Gold Coast“, the beach area we live in.
Object of artwork or perhaps the first attempt of a waste sorting !?
Make up your own mind. If you click on the pictures you will have a closer view.
This bridge might have been a piece of art once. Now it is a rotten, disintegrated and dangerous structure only – but believe it or not, used by locals every day. The bridge is not closed nor any warning sign, nothing – free to use. Sadly I had no camera with me when I saw a young mother with a baby and a stroller crossing it.
Yes, more objects to think imaginatively.
First one has to climb a fence, then through a muddy grassy part with hidden barbwire and if you are lucky you’ll a reach a „real piece of art“. Meters high and wide of scrap metal.
Whatever this rusted rotten object is, it has a sign on „Dialog Uruguay“. Yeah right, it needs a dialog-discussion, but with whom ?
Wow , I found some which I might able to title : „Flying out to Sea“ – or similar ???
This one stands out !!! An Uruguayan art object in somewhere. If you want to visit it you might break your legs in the holes or you fall down somewhere underground. The big hole in front is more then a meter wide, easily. But sorry to say, I get the feeling Uruguayans like their environment unkempt, scruffy, moldy, rotting and perhaps unhealthy and dangerous.
This is „the Sun of Atlantida“. May be it looks better in the sun or with the sun !!??
And finally – some kind of a „fence art“ or just a scrap metal dealer – who knows ?
Every country has it’s Pro’s and Con’s, We live here and we like it, we like the many Pro’s, but this, what I tried to show here, you will find all over the whole country – rotten sh.. everywhere. This is a massive Con (at least to me) – but no one cares !! And I don’t care what excuses they might have !!

Hoi Mike,
interesting, looks almost like Panama. Rotten metal everywhere, except around and on the lawn it looks pretty clean, Panama would have rubbish around the bins and not inside.
Enjoy Uruguay,
saludos, your Italian in PA.

Yes Luigi,
you are totally right.
It seems sometimes like Panama, but in fact
it is much cleaner here.
People throw everything out, this is Latin
American Culture, like Panama.
But here every community has „rubbish collectors“
and the municipality collects with special rubbish
trucks about 3 times a week !!!!
This is not like Panama, where the stinking sh…
is sometimes around for weeks.
Till soon my friend, your German in UY.

You missed „Un sol para Atlantida,“ on the rambla Playa Mansa in Atlántida. Personally, I find it as unexciting as many of the „gems“ you found. To each its own!
The first is called Sapo Ruperto. Sapo means toad, though clearly the artist was thinking of a frog. Sapo Ruperto was a children’s book character created in 1989 by Uruguayan Roy Berocay, who went to high school in Atlántida.
This piece was destroyed in September 2014 by vandals. Apparently the parents of the perps paid to have it done again, but it took some convincing because the sculptor was so disgusted — at least that’s what we were told.

No Doug, I didn’t miss the biggest metal pile on our coast.
It was somehow and somewhere lost in cyberspace.
Already fixed last night.
And the Sapo Ruperto (I know the same story as you tell)
is an entry picture to the post, no negative with this one,
I like it. And what we observe, in high season it is the most
photographed object around.
Speaking about vandals, they have a camera attached now.
Thanks for reading along.
